•0.8 wt% CHC exerts the superior flame retardancy and smoke suppression of ST-based coatings.•Multifunctional synergistic coatings exhibit 56% formaldehyde adsorption and a WCA of 131°.•0.8 wt% CHC makes Eα rise from 59.63 to 73.68 kJ·mol−1 at 252℃∼295℃.
