•Quality factor of the Namche Barwa area (NB) is as low as other areas in the eastern Tibetan plateau (ETP).•Stress drop of NB is one of the largest among other seismic active areas of ETP.•The canyon’s local site effect of NB is significantly amplified at frequencies below 2.34 Hz.
