Modulated Model Predictive Control of Fault-Tolerant PMSM Drives with Four Switches

This paper proposes a modulated model predictive control (MMPC) scheme for a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM) drive system of one-phase fault tolerant operation. To compensate the double frequency current ripples during the fault condition, the MMPC is implemented in the stationary reference frame. Two-phase current models are derived under a one-phase faulty condition. By using the derived models, two-step ahead of the phase current values is predicted. Then, the predicted values are compared with two-step ahead of the current references. Finally, the individual duty cycle for remained two phases are obtained minimizing the cost function. The proposed method is validated through the experimental results on a PMSM drive system. Compared to previous methods, the feed-forward control in the rotating reference frame and the phase-based repetitive controllers, the proposed algorithm achieves lower total harmonic distortions (THDs) in the phase currents as well as simplifying the implementation.
