•Polydopamine (PDA) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were constructed onto carbon fiber (CF) surface.•Surface morphology and wettability of modified CF were characterized.•Tensile and bending properties of CF-PDA-CNT/PLA composites were obtained and analyzed.
