Clinical Update: Ceramides As Novel Biomarkers of Cardiovascular Disease Risk

Historically, lipid panels have been used to predict cardiovascular risk. However, individuals with wellcontrolled lipid levels continue to have cardiac events. Recent advances in genomics and lipidomic technologies have identified a class of lipids known as ceramides, a minor subset of the lipidome that has a causative role in cardiometabolic conditions. Different genes and tissue distributions distinguish ceramides from other lipids. Nurse practitioners and other providers must be knowledgeable of the important role of ceramides in risk stratification for primary and secondary prevention beyond the standard lipid profile.
