Americas, South: Pre-Columbian Exchange in the Andes

The first complex exchange systems in the Andes developed several millennia ago. The unique ecological features of this vast region promoted a rich and varied set of exchange mechanisms. We will first examine the exchange systems of the Inca Empire for which we have good historical data. We will then describe the economic mechanisms of the first complex societies and trace their development over time.
