Several studies have shown the potential efficacy of dextran therapy to reduce an embolic risk in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy (CEA). Nonetheless, dextran has been associated with adverse reactions including anaphylaxis, hemorrhage, cardiac and renal complications.
