Abstract
Biofuel production from lignocellulosic biomass waste has gained significant attention in the recent years due to the rapid depletion of fossil fuels. Lignocellulosic biomass waste, which includes agricultural residues, forest residues, and municipal solid waste, is abundant and inexpensive, making it an attractive feedstock for biofuel production. Biofuel can be produced from lignocellulose by various routes, including pyrolysis, gasification, enzymatic and microbial fermentation. Each technology has its own merits and demerits. The choice of conversion technology depends on the composition of the feedstock and the range of desired products. In this chapter, production of solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels from lignocellulosic biomass by pyrolysis, gasification, enzymatic and microbial fermentation are discussed.
