•Mo2S3/MoP2 films were fabricated via Aerosol Assisted Chemical vapor Deposition.•The MoP2 in the 30-minute thin film promoted Hydrogen Evolution Reaction kinetics.•30-minute thin film exhibited the overpotential of ∼250 mV at 10 mA cm-2.•Synergistic effect in Mo2S3/MoP2 led to better performance than pristine Mo2S3.
