Design and synthesis of a new coordination polymer of zinc (II): Crystal structure and evaluation for its adsorption studies in removing perilous organic dye pollutants in aqueous medium

•A new coordination polymer of zinc metal with HIPA and HIZ ligands reported.•CP-1 was well characterized by SCXRD, PXRD, TGA, FTIR, UV–VIS and SEM analysis.•Adsorption of MB, MO, CV and CR dyes by coordination polymer (CP-1).•DFT was utilized to support dye's adsorption mechanism with the CP-1.•CP-1 shows the 1,2,4-c underlying net with 1,2M3–1 topology.
