•New electrolytes Ba0.5Sr0.5Zr0.9-xGdxY0.1O3-δ (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1) were developed for SOFCs.•Power density of 805 mW cm−2 was achieved by the SOFC with BSZGd0.1Y at 520 °C.•Hybrid H+/O2– conductivity of 0.17 S cm−1 was detected in BSZGd0.1Y at 520 °C.•Crystal structure and electronic property of BSZGd0.1Y were studied by DFT calculation.•Successful demonstration of SOFC and SOEC by using BSZGd0.1Y electrolyte.
