Performance of plate and perforated trashracks on vortex prevention at vertical intake

In the present numerical research, the efficiency of perforated and plate trashracks are investigated in reducing the strength of the formed free surface vortices at vertical intakes. Trashracks are installed at the entrance of the intake as means of preventing the trash entering the tunnel. The Large Eddy Simulation model is used for turbulence modeling scheme along with the Volume of Fluids model to distinguish the water surface. Agreement was evident between numerical and experimental results. Results exhibited that vortex strength which was presented by the Circulation number, decreased dramatically in the presence of plate trashrack. The perforated trashrack also reduced the strength of the vortex, but was not enough to change the vortex class. Results indicated that Circulation number of formed vortices was decreased by about 19 and 42
