I founded and lead the Massachusetts Host-Microbiome Center at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. The Center provides clinical, experimental, and computational resources to study host-microbiota interactions. With a focus on function, we define complex mechanisms of action for how our colonizing microbes contribute to health and disease, and leverage this information to inform clinical care. Our personnel and resources have supported >100 groups in the US and abroad.
My group developed a long-standing program in genomically-informed pathogen surveillance that supports institutions in the greater Boston area. We participate in the FDA's GenomeTrakr Network, and work actively with NCBI to develop resources for national surveillance. More recently, I have developed integrated in vivo metabolomic and metatranscriptomic systems to define complex host-pathogen-commensal interactions in vivo, and their contributions on host outcomes. We have applied these methods to Clostridioides difficile pathogenesis, and to commensal modulation of host adaptive immune responses and to host metabolism. These applications have results in patented therapeutics, start-up companies, and new programs in disease prevention that we are actively implementing.
