Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr. Maurizio Romano is an Associate Professor at the University of Trieste (Italy). He has studied Biology at the University of Trieste from 1985 to 1990 to obtain a Biology degree with full marks. From 1990 to 1994, he obtained a PhD course in Experimental and Clinical Pathology working in the General Pathology Department of the University of Trieste under the supervision of Prof. Pietro Dri and Pierluigi Patriarca. He was involved in a project aimed at characterizing the genetic and molecular basis of the human leukocyte myeloperoxidase (MPO) and eosinophil peroxidase (EPO) deficiencies. From 1991 to 1995, he moved to the Molecular Pathology Laboratory of ICGEB in Trieste, where he worked under the supervision of the Prof. Francisco Baralle (director of the ICGEB in Trieste), and carried out the genetic screening in order to identify novel mutations in the human MPO and EPO genes and then set up systems to analyze the impact of these mutations on the activity and turn over of leukocite enzymes.
After PhD, the scientific interests of Dr. Romano progressively shifted towards the characterization of mechanisms underlying physiologic and pathologic splicing processes (MPO, CFTR, APOA2, THPO, CBS).
In 1995, he got the position of Assistant Professor of General Pathology at the University of Trieste and mantained full collaboration (still ongoing) with the laboratories of Molecular Pathology and Biotechnology Development at ICGEB of Trieste .
Between 1999 and 2001, as part of a research project on Cystic Fibrosis, he contributed to the identification of the nuclear protein TDP-43 as a potential CFTR exon 9 pre-mRNA splicing regulator. Actually, his research is mainly focused on setting up in vitro and in vivo models and systems to better characterize the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Since 1995, he has been teached General Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Trieste. Currently, he is teaching Molecular Pathology and Pathophysiology for the Masters Degree in Biotechnology and the Masters Degree in Pharmacy at the University of Trieste.
