Vibriosis, a bacterial disease, is considered a significant threat to the sustainability and economic viability of shrimp production. The present study evaluated the application of a predatory bacterium to control the population growth of pathogenic Vibrios in Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei). The predatory bacterium was identified as Bacteriovorax sp. OP175948.1 based on the 16S rRNA sequence. The Vibrio-inhibitory activity of Bacteriovorax sp. was evaluated using two independent trials with P. vannamei, exposed to two pathogenic Vibrios, including Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio harveyi. Each trial was conducted in five treatments, including a negative control, a positive control, and a treatment with Bacteriovorax sp. applied at 102, 104, and 106 plaque-forming units mL-1 (PFU mL-1). Results indicated that shrimp infected with V. parahaemolyticus and V. harveyi, and then treated with Bacteriovorax, showed a 6-fold increase in survival for V. parahaemolyticus and a 3-fold increase for V. harveyi, relative to the control. The shrimp treated with 104 to 106 Bacteriovorax sp. improved survival associated with a significant decline in Vibrio spp. counts in the shrimp tissues and rearing water. The Bacteriovorax sp. should be used as a practical strategy to prevent Vibrio-associated mortalities in P. vannamei aquaculture.
This descriptive-correlational research was conducted to examine a state college's organizational culture and management practices in the Philippines. The study's respondents were randomly selected employees during the school year 2022-2023 of Iloilo State College of Fisheries, a state higher institution in the Province of Iloilo, Philippines. The organizational culture was measured using the Organizational Culture Assessment Questionnaire (OCAQ) of Sashi and Rossenbach (2013), and Management Practices Scale developed by Yukl, Gordon, and Taber (2002) was used to gather the data. Findings revealed that the institution has a high level of managing change, achieving goals, coordinating teamwork, customer orientation, and cultural strength. The management is highly task, relationship, and change-oriented. Furthermore, the results indicated a significant relationship between managing change and change-oriented dimensions. Significant relationships were also noted between achieving goals and task-oriented, relationship-oriented, and change-oriented dimensions. There is a significant relationship between customer orientation and change-oriented dimensions, and cultural strength and change-oriented dimensions are also significantly related.
The descriptive-correlational research design was employed to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence quotient and the mathematics performance of first year students. The respondents of the study were the randomly selected first year students during the second semester of the academic year 2021- 2022at the Iloilo State College of Fisheries. The data-gathering instruments were Emotional Intelligence Quotient Questionnaire for emotional intelligence quotient, and Mathematics Performance Test for their performance in Mathematics. Data gathered were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s r. The .05 alpha level was used as the criterion for the acceptance or rejection of the null hypotheses. Results revealed that first year students have average level of emotional intelligence. Students were high in handling relationships, self-regulation and self-motivation and average in empathy, and self-awareness. Generally, they had average performance in Mathematics. A significant and positive relationship was noted between students’ performance in Mathematics and emotional intelligence. It can be concluded therefore that students’ emotional intelligence played important role in enhancing students’ mathematics performance.
Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines are focusing on graduates employability. The immediate supervisors’ demand is very high as they look for graduates who are flexible, willingness to learn the job, technically competent, and committed to excellence. Thus, this study was conducted to determine immediate supervisors’ satisfaction on teaching competence of teachers produced by one State College in Western Visayas. The descriptive-quantitative research design with a standardized research instruments was employed. Since there were a total of 48 graduates in the year 2002-2019 the researcher decided to take them all as respondents. Frequency count, percentage, and mean were used in the descriptive statistical test and Mann-Whitney and Kruskall Wallis analysis for differences in the immediate supervisors’ satisfaction and teachers teaching competence level. Results revealed that respondents’ instructional skills, personal and social qualities were rated as “Surpasses Expectations” and “Very Satisfactory” in teaching competence. Moreover, it was found out there is no significant difference in the immediate supervisors’ satisfaction and on the teaching competence of teachers as to program, position, and number of years in teaching. Notably, results exclaimed that one of the college in Western Visayas is producing graduates who are viable to the academic institution where they teach. Furthermore, the school should not remain complacent considering the fast-changing advancement in the educational arena. Thus, the school administration and the dean of the college of education should closely monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the varied teaching strategies used by teachers ensuring that it enhance students’ communication, creativeness, and critical thinking skills.
