New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) is a school district serving the city of New Haven, Connecticut.Wilbur Cross High School and Hillhouse High School are New Haven's two largest public secondary schools and the only non-magnet secondary schools in the district.Almost all of the district's schools have been renovated under a 15-year, $1.375 billion School Construction Program.
The report on visual health disparities in the United States1 highlights the critical importance of accurate data to both describe and assess the state of visual health disparities and to support efforts to more effectively address the underlying causes for such disparities. As noted in our accompanying article on leveraging data,2 significant opportunities exist to create a robust data system that cannot only mitigate disparities but also fundamentally improve visual health for all. The development of a vibrant learning health system for eye care, where data guide the implementation of new approaches, resulting effects are measured, and additional changes are made in a continuous fashion, will create a bright future for patients and our profession.
In order to address the lack of diversity among L2 Japanese educators, we must consider how to give more students with diverse backgrounds the opportunity to study Japanese, become language educators, pursue and attain Japanese teacher certification, and find jobs in the field. The NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements (2018) defined a path to language proficiency. This article presents a list of “can-do statements” on the path to becoming an L2 Japanese educator. These statements illustrate the experiences that students must have access to in order to stay on the path to becoming a Japanese educator, beginning in kindergarten through their job search and satisfaction. Many of these statements may not be “can-dos” for most students in the U.S currently. If we as a field can change that reality, we have the potential to widen and diversify the pool of potential L2 Japanese educators for years to come.
In 2003, 64% of graduating ophthalmology residents chose fellowship training, an increase from 46% in 1987.1 The fellowship match of 2007 had the highest rate of filled positions in the past 6 years at 84%.2 As more residents choose to participate in fellowship training, and the pool of competitive applicants continues to grow, there is increasing interest among residents regarding the factors considered important in fellowship selection. To our knowledge, there are no reported studies addressing the characteristics and criteria used to select ophthalmology fellows.
