The workshop aims to explore how university libraries can evolve into vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable hubs for community engagement, where you can interact without consuming. By examining the parallels between “third places” and university libraries, we will discuss how these spaces can foster the securing for social needs through social interaction, exchange of ideas, creativity, and learning. This workshop draws inspiration from the question of “What makes the playground a good, great place?” Key themes: Social Sustainability : We will delve into strategies for promoting social sustainability within library environments, supporting psychological wellbeing. This includes creating inclusive spaces that cater to diverse community needs, encouraging lifelong learning, and fostering a sense of belonging among all patrons. Sociomateriality : The workshop will also address the concept of sociomateriality, emphasizing the interplay between social practices and material elements in the library setting. Participants will corporate on how to design and organize library spaces that enhance user experience through integration of technology, physical objects, and various events. Learning outcome: By the end of the workshop, our aim is that participants will have a comprehensive understanding of how to engage university libraries into dynamic, socially sustainable spaces that serve as a facilitator of securing social needs. We aim to have some guidelines that can be followed.
While the state of disaster management practice (DMP) is popular knowledge in some libraries of higher institutions of learning in Nigeria, little is known of the existence of comprehensive and acceptable framework for the practices of disaster management in most libraries. This paper, therefore, attempts to bridge the gap by proposing a comprehensive framework for the management of disaster in libraries of higher institution of learning in Nigeria. Two important stages of Risk Assessment (RA) and DMP were outlined. RA stages emphasize the identification of exact threat disturbing a library as well as identification of cause of the threat in the library. DMP emphasizes deployment of measures, equipment and Disaster Training (DT) based on the type of a threat and cause identified in the first stage affecting a library. The model also highlights monetary challenges, inadequate modern disaster equipment, indifferent attitudes of both users and librarians, adumbrative bottleneck as some of the issues mitigating effective disaster management practices in Nigerian libraries. However, the model also offered use of internally generated fund from printing and photocopying services, use of personal money, administrative pressure and use of prior experiences as solutions to the problems mitigating effective disaster management in Nigerian libraries.
This study was carried out on the collaborative efforts on information resources sharing among Federal Medical Centres (FMCs) in the North-Western states of Nigeria to share and exchange resources for effective support and service delivery. Numerous advantages can result from effective collaboration, such as better resource allocation, greater service delivery, higher levels of innovation, and improved health outcomes. Considering the issue of scarce resources and inefficient budgetary distribution among the FMCs, these initiatives are crucial. FMCs are vital to the healthcare system in Northwestern Nigeria since they provide care for a diverse and often impoverished population. These institutions do, however, have a number of difficulties, such as limited funding, inadequate infrastructure, and the weight of complicated healthcare requirements. Resources and services are acknowledged as important variables since they significantly influence people's decisions about how to obtain knowledge and information necessary for life. Utilising an interview schedule to elicit responses from the target population, the study adopted took a qualitative approach. Thirty-one hospital managers, medical directors, senior healthcare professionals, and policymakers were among the thirty-one participants in the study. In order to emphasize the growing cooperative efforts across federal medical centers to enhance healthcare services and expand access to resources for efficient healthcare service delivery, a thematic analysis was carried out. Among the difficulties impeding collaboration include inadequate financial resources, a dearth of skilled workforce, and impediments to communication. Increasing funding and fostering synergy were two of the recommendations made in order to ensure smooth resource sharing among the FMCs.
