The United States Department of the Navy (DoN) is one of the three military departments within the Department of Defense of the United States of America. It was established by an Act of Congress on 30 April 1798, at the urging of Secretary of War James McHenry, to provide a government organizational structure to the United States Navy (USN); since 1834, it has exercised jurisdiction over the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and, during wartime, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), though each remains an independent service branch. It is led by the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), a statutory civilian officer. Department of the Navy was an executive department, whose secretary served on the president's cabinet, until 1949, when amendments to the National Security Act of 1947 established the Department of Defense as a unified department for all military services; the DoN, along with the Department of the Army and Department of the Air Force, became a component of the DoD subject to the authority, direction and control of the Secretary of Defense. From 2001 to 2019, proposals to rename the Department of the Navy to the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps were introduced with wide support in the United States Congress, but failed due to the opposition of Senator and former U.S. Navy officer John McCain...
Background and aims: Emotional intelligence is increasingly recognized as being associated with health-related behaviors, yet whether these associations differ by age and sex remains unclear. This study examined age-and sex-specific associations between emotional intelligence and physical activity, sleep, sedentary behavior, and body mass index. Methods: Using a large population-based survey sample of 6368 adults aged 18-64 years (71.4% women), we examined age-and sex-specific associations between emotional intelligence and health-related behaviors, including physical activity intensity, sleep, sedentary behavior, and body mass index. Results: Emotional intelligence increased with age in both women and men. Women exhibited higher emotional intelligence scores than men, whereas men reported substantially greater vigorous physical activity. In fully adjusted models, higher emotional intelligence was independently associated with greater vigorous physical activity and lower sedentary behavior, specifically among women across adulthood, whereas no corresponding associations were observed in men. Conclusion: Higher emotional intelligence was associated with greater engagement in vigorous physical activity and lower sedentary behavior, specifically among women across adulthood, suggesting sex-specific coupling between emotional functioning and health-related behavioral regulation.

We examined how college students perceived and discussed an intimate partner stalking case during mock jury deliberations. Specifically, undergraduates constituting 22 mixed-gender mock juries provided individual pre- and postdeliberation verdicts and deliberated in mixed-gender groups. We used Pathfinder analyses to derive semantic networks from their written pre- and postdeliberation verdict reasoning and the transcribed jury deliberations. During deliberations, women primarily made pro-alleged victim and antidefendant comments, considering the alleged victim’s fear and the defendant’s capability of harm. Men mainly made prodefendant comments, such as romanticizing his behavior. After deliberations, women became more prodefendant in their verdict reasons, while men remained similarly prodefendant and sometimes anti-alleged victim pre- and postdeliberations. Results provide evidence for gendered perceptions of criminal stalking, particularly pertaining to defendant threat and alleged victim fear. We consider implications for stalking legislation and education, and legal decision-making.
Background: The modernization of the Naval Forces of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the growing complexity of their technological infrastructure have led to increased specialization of roles and professional competencies among naval personnel. This process is accompanied by progressively differentiated requirements for the development of specific psychophysiologic and personality-based professionally important qualities essential for the effective execution of duties and combat missions. Assessing and considering the level of development of these specialized psychophysiologic and personality traits during the stage of professional selection supports the rational assignment of military personnel and the optimization of training across key naval specialties. In turn, this contributes to improved efficiency and reliability in the performance of professional duties by naval specialists. AIM: to identify the psychophysiologic and personality-based professionally important qualities required for successful mastery of the main groups of naval specialties. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study involved psychologic and psychophysiologic assessments of naval personnel from various specialties within the Naval Forces of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. A set of methods was used to evaluate neurodynamic and psychomotor properties, cognitive functions (attention, memory, and thinking), as well as motivational and personality traits. In addition, expert evaluations of the trainees’ academic and military-professional performance across different specialties were conducted. The results were analyzed using Spearman rank correlation coefficients r and the Kruskal–Wallis analysis of variance. In all cases, the measure of statistical significance for the results of the calculations was a significance level not exceeding 0.05 (p ≤0.05). RESULTS: The study identified specific professionally important qualities required for the main groups of naval specialties. CONCLUSION: The study revealed professionally important psychophysiologic characteristics that support more effective performance within selected naval specialty profiles: organizational (command), operational, and engineering-technical. This pilot study demonstrated statistically significant differences among specialty groups in terms of psychologic and psychophysiologic professionally important qualities. The most pronounced difference between personnel in the organizational, engineering-technical, and operational profiles compared with support personnel was observed on the Aspiration for Specialization scale of the Military-Professional Motivation Questionnaire, which reflects the depth and stability of motivation to master a specific military specialty. The most optimal psychophysiologic parameters and functional state indicators were found among personnel in the engineering-technical profile.
