Universities UK (UUK) is an advocacy organisation for universities in the United Kingdom. It began life in the early 20th century through informal meetings of vice-chancellors of a number of universities and principals of university colleges and was previously known as the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals of the Universities of the United Kingdom (CVCP). As of July 2022, UUK is led by President Steve West – Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of England – and Interim Chief Executive Chris Hale. UUK is registered charity with an annual income of £13.7 million, which is largely raised from its member institutions.
Since late 2021, the term ‘cost-of-living crisis’, indicating decreased disposable incomes, has gained prominence in the UK. This study draws on the long-running online participatory research project Changing Realities, involving over 100 low-income parents and caregivers across the UK, to provide deeper insights into cost-of-living challenges. Focusing on transcriptions of spoken testimonies and written diary entries between February and June 2023, findings highlight the normalised struggle to meet living costs irrespective of a crisis, emphasising effects on low-income families and the inability to make further sacrifices. The study sheds light on the broader ramifications on family life, prompting an exploration of its enduring nature and temporal support. The article concludes by setting out co-produced policy recommendations, which urge the government to rethink social security as an investment in the future, rather than as a temporary safety net that leaves families exposed to a permanent state of crisis.
Racism is not merely bad behaviours and overt discrimination. Yet interviews, a primary qualitative method, have not much evolved to help researchers generate a better understanding of the more subtle and structural forms of racism. To address this shortcoming, this article introduces race-conscious conversations, a decolonial interviewing style. Building upon epistemic interviewing and informed by decolonial thinking, race-conscious conversations are an interviewing style that I developed based on five principles: (1) understanding of multi-positionalities between interviewer and interviewee; (2) use of serial and active interviews; (3) use of creative methods to activate critical consciousness; (4) use of theories of race and anti-racism to interpret the data; and (5) ethics of care. With race-conscious conversations, qualitative researchers, especially those in applied sciences, can reconfigure interviews, a method arguably rooted in Western thinking, towards decolonial direction to generate better empirical foundations to eliminate racism, including in contexts where discussions on racism are often silenced.
Meltpool modulation in Selective Laser Remelting Additive Manufacturing via an oscillating magnetic field generates Thermoelectric Magnetohydrodynamics (TEMHD) flow. Numerical predictions show that the resulting microstructure can be significantly altered. A multi-scale numerical model captures the meso-scale melt pool dynamics coupled to microscale solidification showing the microstructure evolution and solute redistribution. The results highlight the complex interaction of the various physical phenomena and also show the method’s potential to disrupt the epitaxial growth defect. The model predictions are supported by preliminary experimental results that demonstrate the dependency of the melt pool depth on magnetic field orientation. The results highlight how a time-dependent field has the potential to provide an independent control mechanism to tailor microstructures.
