The University of Durban-Westville (UDW) was a university situated in Westville, Durban, South Africa, which opened in 1972. It is now one of the campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. It was initially established for Indians, as during apartheid there were few universities that admitted non-White students. Prior to the building of UDW, Indian students traveled by ferry to a facility at Salisbury Island, which had been established in 1961 as the University College for Indians UDW offered degrees in commerce, the arts, law, engineering, and health sciences and sciences in general. The Schrödinger equation is a (linear) partial differential equation that can be solved exactly only in very few special cases such as the Coulomb potential or the harmonic oscillator potential. For more general potentials or for problems with more than two particles the quantum mechanical problem is no easier to solve than the corresponding classical one. In these situations variational methods are one of the most powerful tools for deriving approximate eigenvalues E and eigenfunctions ψ. These approximations are done in terms of a theory of density functionals as proposed by Thomas, Fermi, Hohenberg and Kohn. This chapter explains briefly the basic facts of this theory.

In 1994 South Africa became a democracy with a government elected by the people for the people. Citizens taking control of their own lives is a general goal of a democracy. The Constitution (RSA, 1996), the Reconstruction and Development Programme (ANC, 1994) and subsequent policy documents all advocate the importance of participation and the role of civil society in democratising South Africa. South Africa has chosen the path of developmental social welfare as its reformist approach to explaining and overcoming social problems. Crucial to social change is active citizen participation at many different levels that will enable citizens to contribute to the process of change that will then lead to nation-building, reconciliation and reconstruction (Pretorius-Heuchert & Ahmed, 2001:32). The government has committed itself to collaborating with non-governmental organisations as representative organs of civil society and its entire people in the reconstruction and development of the country. The year 2002 has been declared the year of the volunteer. The Africa National Congress has also launched its matsema campaign or voluntary community service programme to empower communities.
