The University of Houston–Downtown (UHD) is a public university in Houston, Texas. It is part of the University of Houston System. Its campus spans 40 acres (16 ha) in Downtown Houston, with a satellite location in northwestern Harris County. Founded in 1974, UHD is the second-largest university in the Houston area with more than 14,000 students. The university serves students in four academic colleges. UHD offers 52 degree programs: 45 bachelors and seven masters. Awarding more than 2,400 degrees annually, the university has more than 40,000 alumni.
This study was a retrospective, cross-sectional review of data from a single medical office comparing resting energy expenditure (REE) derived from predictive energy equations to REE measured by an indirect calorimetry device among individuals with overweight and obesity diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. Bland-Altman plots were used to assess the level of bias between the 2 methods for determining REE. Correlations were assessed using Pearson's correlation. The Mifflin-St. Jeor equation had less bias than the Harris-Benedict and Owens equations among individuals with OSA. This study was a retrospective analysis of existing data and, therefore, had several limitations.
We examine how passive institutional ownership affects the informational efficiency of stock prices. Because passive institutional investors prefer greater transparency, their presence encourages managers to enhance firm disclosure (Boone & White, 2015; Schoenfeld, 2017). Increased disclosure improves the information environment and reduces information uncertainty, leading to lower post-earnings announcement drift (PEAD) and greater price efficiency (Hung et al., 2015; Zhang, 2006). Accordingly, we predict that higher passive institutional ownership strengthens the contemporaneous market response to earnings announcements while mitigating PEAD. Using firm additions to the S&P 500 index as an exogenous shock, we document that increases in passive institutional ownership lead to greater firm disclosure. Consistent with our prediction, we find higher earnings response coefficients (ERC) and weaker PEAD among firms with greater passive institutional ownership. Decomposing earnings into firm-specific and systematic components, we further show that the higher ERC and weaker PEAD arise from the timely incorporation of both components into prices. Our findings contribute to the ongoing debate on whether the rise of passive investing enhances or impairs price efficiency.
The present study explored the study habits and strategies of 469 college undergraduates and their impact on GPA. Study habits that positively correlated with higher GPAs included planning one's study schedule in advance, studying in the morning, and spacing out study sessions. Self-testing was the only reliable study strategy that was positively correlated with GPA; cramming the night before an exam was negatively correlated with GPA. To assess whether study habits and strategies varied across student groups, Latent Profile Analysis was used to identify distinct subgroups. The three groups of learners differed in age, non-traditional student characteristics, and course modality preferences. Younger, moderately nontraditional, online-oriented students were more likely to plan their study schedule. Older, nontraditional students who prefer online learning were less likely to study with their friends. Overall, the present high-powered study of diverse college students demonstrates that learning behaviors vary by student characteristics and are related to grades. Accordingly, instructors must understand their students' needs to provide effective support for their students.
Registered dietitian nutritionists (RDN) provide medical nutrition therapy as a core therapeutic approach to induce weight loss in individuals with and without obstructive sleep apnea. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of an RDN-led weight loss program. A cross-sectional, retrospective review of data from a weight management program in a single private office of a physician specializing in sleep medicine was performed. Patients self-selected and followed one of four dietary approaches. Statistically significant weight reductions were observed from baseline to a 4th follow-up appointment (P < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that an RDN-led weight management program can effectively induce weight loss.
This article offers multiple strategies for instructors who are implementing intercultural communication (IC) projects in their classrooms for the first time. The strategies-referred to as UNITE-are based on five main stages that collaborative projects can follow: understanding and learning about IC collaborations, navigating the project prior to the classroom collaboration, introducing the project to students, tending the project throughout its duration, and ending the project. Using their years of experience in participating in the Trans-Atlantic and Pacific Project (TAPP), the authors provide examples and explanations of moves and activities that have worked in facilitating successful IC collaboration projects for students in their technical and professional communication courses.
