
Towards Open Graphical Tool-Building Framework Nowadays, there are many frameworks for developing domain-specific tools. However, if we want to create a really sophisticated tool with specific functionality requirements, it is not always an easy task to do. Although tool-building platforms offer some means for extending the tool functionality and accessing it from external applications, it usually requires a deep understanding of various technical implementation details. In this paper we try to go one step closer to a really open graphical tool-building framework that would allow both to change the behavior of the tool and to access the tool from the outside easily. We start by defining a specialization of metamodels which is a great and powerful facility itself. Then we go on and show how this can be applied in the field of graphical domain-specific tool building. The approach is demonstrated on an example of a subset of UML activity diagrams. The benefits of the approach are also clearly indicated. These include a natural and intuitive definition of tools, a strict logic/presentation separation and the openness for extensions as well as for external applications.
UML Diagram Layouting: the State of the ArtThe usual aim of the modern computer-aided system modelling is to improve a connection between software model and code components. Therefore, the task of a diagram import/export becomes very important during software development. Layouting of diagrams after importation from another tool and application plays the main role. Authors of this paper describe some concepts, which are currently being considered in the area of diagram layouting and indicate several problems and their potential solutions for use in the development of CASE tools.
This paper presents a comparative analysis of linear genetic programming and artificial neural network methods to solve classification tasks. Usually classification tasks have data sets containing a large number of attributes and records, and more than two classes that will be processed using, for example, created classification rules. As a result, by using classical method to classify a large number of records, a high classification error value will be obtained. The artificial neural networks are often used to solve classification task, mostly obtaining good results. The linear genetic programming is a new direction of evolution algorithms that is not widely researched and its application areas are not well defined. However, some advantages of linear genetic programming are based on genetic operators whose structure does not require complicated calculations. During this work approximately 400 experiments were conducted with linear genetic programming and artificial neural network methods, using various data sets with different quantity of records, attributes and classes. Based on the results received, conclusions on possibilities of using the methods of linear genetic programming and artificial neural networks in classification problems were drawn, and suggestions for improving their performance were proposed.
An Analysis of Wi-Fi Based Indoor Positioning AccuracyThe increasing demand for location based services inside buildings has made indoor positioning a significant research topic. This study deals with indoor positioning using the Wireless Ethernet IEEE 802.11 (Wireless Fidelity, Wi-Fi) standard that has a distinct advantage of low cost over other indoor wireless technologies. The aim of this study is to examine several aspects of location fingerprinting based indoor positioning that affect positioning accuracy. Overall, the positioning accuracy achieved in the performed experiments is 2.0 to 2.5 meters.
In this paper, the implementation of security system that has strict requirements on the time of evaluation of each transaction made by the user is examined on the example of building a system for user behaviour modelling using Markov models. Evaluation of the effectiveness of both the classical approach to the implementation of a server that calculates metric of the user model and with the use of lightweight threads, as well as of a new ideology Deferred-based event model is performed. A number of tests of various configurations are conducted, showing the preferred server for the Deferred-based type of system as well as an approach to implementing this type of request service.
Impact of Antibody Panel Size on Classification Accuracy This paper experimentally studies the influence of antibody panel size reduction on classification results. The presented study includes four classification methods and five feature evaluators that are applied to five different biomedical data sets with large dimensionality (1200 features). The behaviour of the classifiers in these data sets is examined to reveal overall trends of dimensionality reduction impact on classification accuracy.
Problems and Perspectives of Code Generation from UML Class Diagram As a result of increasing technological diversity, more attention is being focused on model driven architecture (MDA), and its standard - Unified Modeling Language (UML). UML class diagrams require correct diagram notation mapping to target programming language syntax under the framework of MDA. Currently there are plenty of CASE tools which claim that they are able to generate the source code from UML models. Therefore by combining the knowledge of a programming language, syntax rules and UML class diagram notation semantic, an experimental model for stressing the code generator can be produced, thus allowing comparison of quality of the transformation result. This paper describes a creation of such experimental models.
This paper aims to research various data mining techniques applied to solve intrusion detection problems. In general, intrusion detection techniques can be divided into two major categories: misuse detection and anomaly detection. Taking into consideration effectiveness of the anomaly detection technique not only against known types of attacks (like misuse detection does by exploiting signature database) but also against new ones, it has become a topical issue in majority of data and computer security researches. The techniques discussed in the paper include the Hidden Markov Model (HMM) method for modelling and evaluating invisible events based on system calls, further development of Stephanie Forrest’s idea of the fixed-length audit trail patterns, the principle component analysis based method for anomaly intrusion detection with less computation efforts, algorithm based on k-nearest neighbour method, as well as applying association rule algorithm to audit data.
Artificial Intelligence in Knowledge Management: Overview and Trends Artificial intelligence techniques offer powerful tools for the development of knowledge management systems. Since the early 2000s, no survey describing the use of artificial intelligence capabilities in knowledge management tasks has been conducted. This paper gathers and organizes latest achievements of artificial intelligence in dealing with knowledge management issues. Accomplishment of previously set objectives in this field has been studied.
The Definition of Framework for Automated Creation of Graph Visualization Systems In this paper the authors perform an analysis of automated creation of graph visualization systems (GVS). The complete process, starting with definition of functional requirements for GVS and finishing with evaluation of resulting system, is described. The overview of each construction step is provided. The set of metric types is developed for evaluation of resulting GVS. Features of existing solutions are compared with proposed framework. Conclusions are made and further researches are defined.
A Method for Documenting Modifications in ERP SystemsModern Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems are highly complex. This complexity is further increased by introducing modifications into the standard functionality. Maintenance and evolution of ERP systems becomes unmanageable if modifications are not properly documented. This paper elaborates a method for documenting and analyzing modifications made in ERP systems. These modifications are classified according to their impact on the standard functionality and a set of parameters for defining each modification is established. A template for describing modifications is also developed. The modifications are stored in the register of modifications and spreadsheet tools are used for analyzing these modifications. The analysis example is provided. It demonstrates identification of relationships between modifications and impact of modifications on elements of the standard system.
The Capabilities of Simulation in Spatial Planning To facilitate and accelerate the integration of Latvia into the EU the latest strategic and spatial planning methods, as well as practical experience must be acquired. Spatial planning deals with land use issues forming the basis for high quality living environments and sustainable development. This paper analyses the capabilities of simulation models in the area of spatial planning for training and practice processes in Latvia. On the basis of this analysis a multi-scale, spatially explicit, dynamic modelling framework for local government is developed. Telpiskās plānošanas process, izmantojot datorizēto imitācijas modeļu virtuālo vidi, veicina un uzlabo lēmumu pieņemšanas procedūru, kas ir īpaši svarīgi pašreizējās valsts teritoriālās struktūras reformu un jauno novadu izveidošanas gaitā. Rakstā ir veikta imitācijas modeļu pielietošanas iespēju analīze Latvijas telpiskās plānošanas apmācības un prakses procesā analizēta un apkopota telpiskās plānošanas imitācijas modeļu pielietošanas ārzemju pieredze. Izmantojot zinātniskās publikācijas un interneta informāciju, pētījuma ietvaros veiktā geosimulācijas mērķiem izmantojamās programmatūras salīdzinošā analīze ļauj secināt, ka vispiemērotākie programmatūras rīki Latvijas telpisko problēmu risināšanai ir UrbanSim, NetLogo un AnyLogic. Pētījuma ietvaros ir izstrādāts konceptuāls ietvars Latvijas Kurzemes regiona Kuldīgas novada ilgtspējīgas attīstības modelēšanai. Dotā pētījuma ilgtermiņa mērķis ir izstrādāt daudzmērogu telpiski precīzu dinamisku modeli, kas apvieno komponentus piecos telpiskos līmeņos: globālajā (pasaule un Eiropas Savienība (ES)), nacionālajā, regionālajā, novada un lokālajā līmenī. Возможности использования имитационных моделей в процессах пространственного планирования Для облегчения и ускорения процесса интеграции Латвии в ЕС необходимо всестороннее изучение и использование практических методов стратегического и пространственного планирования. Пространственное планирование включает в себя вопросы политики землепользования, составляющие основу для высокого качества жилой среды и устойчивого развития. Процессы пространственного планирования, используя компьютерное моделирование и модели виртуальной среды, способствуют развитию и повышению эффективности процесса принятия решений, что особенно важно в контексте государственной реформы и территориальной реструктуризации Латвии, создания новых уездов. В статье проведен анализ моделей, используемых в территориальном планировании Латвии, обобщен зарубежный опыт использования имитационных моделей применительно к планированию территории. Основываясь на научных публикациях и Интернет-информации, используя сравнительный анализ программного обеспечения геоимитации, были сделаны выводы, что наиболее подходящими программными инструментами для решения пространственных проблем Латвии являются UrbanSim, NetLogo и AnyLogic. В рамках исследований был разработан концептуальный фреймворк моделирования устойчивой общины для самоуправления Кулдиги в Курземском регионе Латвии. Долгосрочной целью данного научного проекта является разработка многомасштабной, пространственно четкой, динамической модели, которая объединяет компоненты на пяти пространственных уровнях: в глобальном (мир, Европейский Союз (ЕС), национальном, региональном, областном и локальном масштабе.
An Extension of BPMN Meta-model for Evaluation of Business Processes Business process modeling is used for better understanding and communication of company's processes. Mostly, business process modeling is discussed from the information system development perspective. Execution of a business process involves various factors (costs and time) which are important and should be represented in business process models. Controlling of business units uses post execution analysis for detection of failures for improvement. The process models conceived for information system development are not sufficient for post execution analysis. This paper focuses on the challenges of business process modeling in the post execution context. We provide a meta model for evaluation of a business process and discuss BPMN in this context. We also extend existing BPMN meta model for performance analysis of business processes. The proposed extensions are presented with the help of an example.
Data integration from autonomous, remote data sources is complicated by the data source heterogeneity, lack of methodological support and appropriate data integration systems. To solve this problem, the On-demand Remote Data Integration Architecture (ORDIA) is defined, which promotes maintenance and allows minimizing data integration time. A data integration task parallelization algorithm is the key part of this architecture. A detailed description of this algorithm is provided, and its performance is evaluated by experimental comparison with other data integration solutions.
Transportation Mode Choice Analysis Based on Classification MethodsMode choice analysis has received the most attention among discrete choice problems in travel behavior literature. Most traditional mode choice models are based on the principle of random utility maximization derived from econometric theory. This paper investigates performance of mode choice analysis with classification methods - decision trees, discriminant analysis and multinomial logit. Experimental results have demonstrated satisfactory quality of classification.
Role of UML Class Diagram in Object-Oriented Software DevelopmentUML is an industrial standard for object-oriented software specification which offers a notation for class modeling during object oriented software development. Since the UML class diagram is a so-called "bridge" between software specification at the user side and software realization at the developer side, it requires strong guidelines for identification of class objects from the problem domain and notational conventions for modeling of the class diagram for its further usage in system coding. This paper presents a discussion on problematic stages and possible element transformations into software components. Several conclusions are drawn on potential usage of the class diagram in industry.
Map Merging in the Context of Image Processing The area of map merging is tightly connected to the area of image processing. Usually metric maps created by robots are represented as occupancy grids. It is easy to apply algorithms used in image processing to this kind of map representation. The image processing subfield that is closest to the map merging is the image registration. It can be assumed that metric map merging methods similarly to the image registration methods consist of three components: feature space, search strategy and similarity metric. Algorithms from image processing can also be used in map merging for map preprocessing. The goal of this paper is to explore similarities between the fields of map merging and image processing and to determine how the results of this research can be used for the development of a map merging framework and consequently new map merging approaches.
Automated Derivation of Use Case Model from Topological Functioning ModelThe first important step in Model Driven Architecture software development is qualitative analysis and specification of structure and behavior of business and its supporting information system as well as software requirements. We continue the research on achieving a qualitative software requirements model, Use Case Model (UCM), based on a formal business model, Topological Functioning Model (TFM), by using formal model transformations. This paper discusses the results of implementation of the transformation from TFM to UCM by using Query/View/Transformation Relations supported by mediniQvt.
Aspect-Oriented Approach to Implement Message Handler in Multi-agent SystemsThis paper focuses on message handling in multi-agent systems. The proposed approach uses aspect-oriented programming to separate message handling from other agent concerns, thus increasing system's modularity and simplifying modification and expansion. To illustrate the proposed approach in practice, a prototype of a simple knowledge base agent model is implemented. The prototype is built on top of JADE platform. AspectJ is used for aspect-oriented implementation.
Identification of Relations between BDI Logic and BDI AgentsBDI (Beliefs, Desires, Intentions) is one of the most popular intelligent agent architectures which was inspired by multi-modal BDI logics. The main idea behind BDI is to implement system's behaviour by specifying it as a set of mental objects. This allows designing systems at a high level of abstraction which come closer to a human-like thinking. Although this architecture has been rapidly developing for about 20 years, its relevance to BDI logic is still arguable. This paper describes the basics of modal logic and main inference algorithms. Main concepts of BDI agents are presented and their relationships with BDI logic are discussed. Finally advantages and disadvantages of implementing BDI interpreter as a theorem prover are discussed.
