
This article proposes LOCARN: an alternative network architecture providing a packet connectivity layer, which is able to self-adapt its routing paths opportunistically according to both the network resources changes and the effective traffics fluctuations. Moving close to a global maximization of available resources usage and assuming high resiliency under failures, LOCARN focuses on components coupling simplicity and plug-and-play guidance. The following article presents the architecture and then evaluates its performances. Specifically, LOCARN produces significant overheads in counterparty of its suitable properties, because of the radicality of its design. Considering its overall characteristics, we envision LOCARN as an alternative to current packet transport network architectures based on IP/MPLS, typically metropolitan and cores subparts of operators’ networks. We show thereafter that in a such use case the overhead impact is acceptable and even negligible beside the transmission capacities available in such networks. To do so, we rely on analysis, on computer simulations and finally on a statistical model.
Sensor networks have been increasingly deployed for civil and military applications over the last years. Due to their low resources, sensors come along with new issues regarding network security and energy consumption. Focusing on the network availability, previous studies proposed to protect the network against denial of service attacks with the use of traffic monitoring agents. Working on the election process, we try to enhance this solution by introducing an energy-aware and secure method to dynamically select these “cNodes” in a clustered WSN: nodes with the higher residual energy get elected. We discuss limitations of this deterministic selection and suggest to designate new control nodes, “vNodes”, to monitor the cNodes by periodically enquiring about their remaining energy, thus ensuring that they do not lie during the election process in attempt to keep their role. Validation is first carried out with a formal specification of our proposal using the UPPAAL model-checker. We model nodes by means of communicating timed automata, logical clocks and timing constraints. Through Computation Tree Logic we express and check properties for the election processes, related to energy and presence of greedy or jamming nodes.
AlgoPath is a serious game to help students with no classical computer science background understand the main concepts of algorithmics. The player builds a world that represents the ongoing algorithm by herself/himself. This world is made of concrete, paths and grass. Thanks to the inner model of AlgoPath that is based on the Model-View-Controller architecture (MVC), we intend to create a virtual teacher in the world of AlgoPath named AlgoTch. The main goals of AlgoTch are to oversee the players’ interactions, to intervene when the interactions do not correspond to what it is expected from her/him and to give hints and tips when she/he asks a question. We show how AlgoTch interacts with the Controller component of the architecture and we describe the inner model of AlgoTch. The latter is based on particular comments the real teacher writes for the various mistakes that can be made by a player and on first degree logic. We explain the three gameplay types available within AlgoPath: a single one, in which the gamer can discover the design of algorithms by her/his own; a competitive one, in which two or several players fight against one another to be the first to find the best algorithm; and a collaborative one, in which they have to find the best algorithm as a team. Finally, we explain our choice to develop AlgoTch in a new version of AlgoPath with Unity.
In modern vehicles, there are a lot of devices (GPS receiver, Tachograph, etc.) with different functions. The communication between these peripherals is rarely ensured. In fact, they have to exchange useful information about the vehicle status. Many protocols and standards are used to connect embedded devices. Then, the compatibility between them is not always guaranteed. We propose in this paper a new design of a smart channel. This channel allows the communication and interoperability between heterogeneous embedded systems. The smart channel builds services which can be customized by the end-user. Furthermore, simulation results are provided to illustrate this claim and to assess the performance of the proposed model.
The BiVACS project (BiVACS for "Bien Vivre son Autonomie Chez Soi", Independant Well being at Home) proposes the establishment of exchanges and meetings between people with loss of autonomy, professionals (of health, medical and social, social or industry) and family caregivers. A multidisciplinary working group was set up to establish the needs on the theme of the fall, to show, to manipulate and to "evaluate" existing solutions, and to lead to recommendations for industrialists developing such solutions. The scope of this article is focused on the problematic of traffic safety, dealing with the problem of car intersections with blocked view crossing. A special wireless sensor network (WSN) for car detection taking advantage of ultra-low-power TI products, microcontroller MSP430F2232, 868MHz RF transceiver CC1101 and LDO voltage regulator TPS7033, was developed due to this reason. The WSN consist of four network nodes supplied with the special safety lightings which serve the function of intelligent traffic safety mirror.
This paper aims to present an initial research concerning a possible approach, in which a data mining technique classification could contribute to the completion of the knowledge base for expert system embedded in TERAPERSan intelligent system, which assists the personalized therapy of speech disorders, for Romanian children suffering from dyslalia. Since March 2008 the system is used by the therapists from Regional Speech Therapy Center of Suceava. It provides a data set which can serve as a foundation for data mining operations. Patterns resulted from these operations may enrich the set of rules which form the knowledge base of expert system in TERAPERS.
The paper describes a system for recognition of objects in traffic scene from multiple moving vehicles in the vehicular ad hoc network (VANET). The proposed system is based on query in which a user can explain what objects to find in an image captured by a camera mounted in a vehicle along with other sensors. A user or a machine can build a query in which description of searched objects and required output are defined using object lambda calculus. Then the query is sent to vehicles in VANET in order to process in real-time. If any vehicle recognizes object of interest given by the query, the answer is returned back to query author.
Many technology-based products and services have proven to be successful in supporting older adults with cognitive disorders in regard to health and social care, safety, and independent living. However, several barriers to effective design, assessment and provision of assistive technologies in this context have been identified over the last years (e.g., technology acceptance and usability issues, methodological limitations in the assessment process, difficulties to balance the interests of different stakeholders, fragmentation in the field, lack of appropriate models for including assistive technology in global care plans). These barriers are associated either to micro-level factors, pertaining to the individual user, or to macro-level factors, related to a variety of stakeholders and the socio-economic, organizational and infrastructural characStudia Informatica Universalis. This paper discusses how Living Labs in the sector of healthcare, by promoting user-centered approaches, open-innovation, multi-stakeholder alliances and real-life experimentations, offer the infrastructure, knowledge, services and flexibility to address these issues. After summarizing main barriers to the use of assistive technology by older adults with cognitive disorders, we provide a general description the Living Lab concept and some examples of related national and regional initiatives. Then, we present LUSAGE, a French Living Lab engaged in the design, assessment and deployment of assistive technology solutions for older adults with cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. LUSAGE’s scope and activities are described in terms of the identification of micro and macro level factors that influence AT development, assessment and provision in this context. Finally, we suggest some promising directions for further development of Living Labs in the field of aging and independent living.
To improve the quality of life in nursing homes, E-monitor’age project (2012-2015) addresses the development of a monitoring system based on different types of innovating sensors and a powerful self-learning decision process. This paper gives a brief description of the project origin, concept and architecture.
“Domomédecine” is a new concept of health system proposed by the Academy of Technology in 2009 to maintain the patient at home. This health care system patient-centered, multi-actors and multi-pathologies is using telehealth and telemedicine as tools. The becoming of technology in the patient’s home should not be lived as an intrusion. Beyond technical performance, patient accompaniment quality seems to be a major challenge for the success of any “domomédecine” experiment. In the field of social sciences, accompaniment is a multifaceted concept. It is part of a constructivist principle but also in logic skills. In the theoretical field of the professional didactic, our approach is to articulate accompaniment to the service relationship such as defined by Mayen. The aim of this study is to characterize the patient accompaniment in a “domomédecine” experiment carried out by Mr. Francis Levi, oncologist at Villejuif Paul Brousse Hospital. This experiment is chrono-chemotherapy. Cancer patients are treated by chrono-chemotherapy at home. A digital platform is replacing classical monitoring and is installed at their home. The becoming of this technology in the patient’s home is made to have a early detection of complications and aims to improve the quality of life of the patient. In order to characterize the patient accompaniment, a qualitative methodology was used for data collection. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with various stakeholders of the service of Mr. Levi : professional actors (doctors, biomedical engineer ,nurses) and non-professional actors (patient, caregiver : family). This technique aims to collect informations on the accompanying professional practices and needs of patients and caregivers. The content analysis of the interviews was crossed to obtain a characterization of the accompaniment in terms of activity, relationship and professional practice. The ultimate goal of diabetes treatment is to improve the health of diabetics as well as to reduce the risk of macrovascular and microvascular complications associated with diabetes by maintaining the quality of life of the patients. For this purpose, we conducted a study in which we assessed the insulin needs in the elderly type 2 diabetic patients in order to develop an insulin treatment model from physiological parameters. At this time, the needs of this specific population are not well known because of the combination of persistent insulin resistance and reduced capacity of insulin secretion. Therefore, we considered a cohort of patients older than 65 years. We used data mining methods to replace the empirical and typically used patterns at the initiation of insulin therapy. This process is meant for better assistance during the adjustment of the insulin treatment of the type 2 diabetes patients. Modern medical diagnosis systems very often accumulate numerous data. These computer medical support systems are used in monitoring and diagnosis, which require the various tools to interpret captured parameters. In the paper the new type of the computer medical support system has been presented. The system uses diagnostic conclusion method based on a similarity between the patient’s condition and diseases’ patterns contained in repository. On the basis of the repository data the classifier gives the most adequate decision. The new repository data are continuously stored. For this reason classifier can work in the self-tuning mode, what improves the classification quality.
In the last few years, a series of technological developments has given some new options for health monitoring system. Internet-based solutions are becoming available that allow caregivers to keep an unobtrusive, high-tech eye on elderly, ensuring that they’re safe, healthy and well cared for . In this article, we start by categorizing supervision systems and highlighting some implemented systems. Next, we describe the equipped rooms in the nursing home in which we recorded our multimodal data base so we depict PERvision platform (hardware and software part) installed in our trial site called GIS Madonah . In the next section, we expose our study of methods to clean and filter data stored trough PERvision platform and exhibit our approach to extract useful information from this recorded data. Finally, we describe a supervision system which exploits information generated by anonymous, binary sensors, particularly those employed by security systems such as motion. This monitoring software consists in analyzing human behaviors and looking for changes in their habit.
Health information is today a key issue in advanced societies. The information sources have kept diversifying over the decades: traditional media and, more recently, Internet provide access to a wide range of information sources: medical authorities, government and public institutions, pharmaceutical and food industries, associations and individuals. All these sources are no longer strictly controlled by legitimate authorities. In the first section of this paper, we shall recall some key moments of this progressive enlargement of the circulation of health information during the last decades. In section two, we shall focus on the major turn in the access to health information represented by the development of the Internet. The arguments developed in the first two sections will lead us to question in section three some major social and political stakes of health information: the difficulty to label information sources; the fluctuation of the boundaries between information and knowledge; the reshaping of the confidence relationships with the healthcare professionals.
We propose in this paper some considerations above the advances in e-health technology based on the papers presented in the present special issue, as well as some perspectives about prototypes in achievement, discussing their acceptability in the framework of a mutual benefit both for elderly people and for the society, depending on the sensorimotor abilities as well as cognitive and decisional autonomy kept during the longevity. Symmetrising with the infancy, the society has, for helping dependent people, to identify helpers with carefully specifying their role and planning their financial support. Thereafter invasive and intrusive aspects of new micro-nanotechnologies are discussed and then we study the complexity of the data recorded on elderly subjects in their environment : it comes essentially from interactions between numerous elements regulating their spatiotemporal rhythms. Taking into account these interactions, we can describe emergent invariant structures like signatures of the global behaviour allowing alarms triggered when the activity becomes uncommon with respect to a canonical profile characteristic of subjects in their environment. We conclude by proposing a coherent future research program whose aim is to consider dependent elderly persons in their in his own, biological and sociological whole for ensuring their integrity and comfort.
