
The Borg (yes, the ones from the Star Trek series) are an alien species with a unique peculiarity: every “individual” is connected to any other through a high speed communication network, thus any knowledge acquired by any member of the community is instantly spread/shared and taken advantage of. This mechanism makes The Borg very knowledgeable and adaptive, they are virtually invincible in battle and wherever they go they assimilate other cultures. This article argues that The Borg architecture and capability is a close metaphor of FLOSS (Free Libre Open Source Software) paradigm... with some differences of course, luckily. FLOSS has some limitations but also some advantages over the fictional Star Trek alien civilization. First of all, FLOSS is not Evil. Authors will use, as an example, a system (codenamed NetLAMPS) they recently built (based entirely on FLOSS) to gather road/traffic status information. This software is enough complex (involves many technologies: mail, cell phones, gps, webcams, network, etc.) to represent a reasonable example and at the same time enough manageable (less than 3k LOC Lines of Code) to be almost entirely explained in this article.
A reflection type optical device comprises a transparent base member having an incident light receiving surface, at least a reflection surface for internally reflecting the incident light and a light emitting surface for emitting the reflected light. A dielectric layer is formed on each of the incident light receiving surface and the light emitting surface, and a metal layer is formed on all the remaining surfaces of the transparent base member other than the incident light receiving surface and the light emitting surface.
The invention relates to a signal transmission method and a motherboard structure used in a base station of a radio system, for example, and comprises printed circuit board units communicating with the motherboard structure and communicating with one another by signals. The motherboard structure comprises an optical fibre sheet having optical fibres arranged therein, first converter means receiving from the printed circuit board unit electrical low-power and high-frequency signals, such as clock signals and RF signals. The first converter means convert the received signals into optical signals, and each optical signal is conducted into an optical fibre of its own in the fibre sheet. The motherboard structure further comprises second converter means converting the optical signals which have propagated in the fibre sheet back into electrical signals which are conducted to the printed circuit board units after the conversion.
A T nut has a cap portion 45 integrally formed continuous from a tip end portion of a flarable portion 34. At a connecting region between flarable portion 34 and cap portion 45, an inner surface 44 of flarable portion 34 is formed recessed outward. With this structure, the T nut can be driven cleanly directly into a solid workpiece object, without the necessity of providing a receiving hole in advance. Also with this structure, a caulking force applied by a caulking counter tool to the tip end portion of the T nut separates the cap portion from the flarable portion and outwardly caulks and flares the flarable portion to secure the T nut to the workpiece.
A cooling oil circuit (D) circulates cooling oil over an x-ray tube absorbing its waste heat. A refrigeration circuit (E) then cools the cooling oil. A heat buffer (52) absorbing peak heat loads from the cooling fluid when the x-ray tube is generating x-rays. Valves (58, 60) regulate a relative amount of cooling oil entering the heat buffer to increase heat transfer efficiency. The heat buffer enables the system to handle peak heat loads with a smaller, more condensed refrigeration system, by absorbing heat during operation of the x-ray tube and releasing heat between operations.
An eyeglass support temple (14) comprising at least one first rod (13), made out of shape memory alloy or any other highly elastic alloy which is difficult to weld, which at one of its ends carries a hinge (17) for the connection to a frame of a pair of glasses. Another end portion of the first rod (13) is inserted and locked in a bush (15) integral with a second rod (12), made out of ductile material, where at least one portion of such a second rod (12) is shaped so as to match the shape of the human ear. The temple (14) is realised through a process which comprises a step in which an end portion (16) of a first rod (13) is inserted into a bush (15), a subsequent step in which the bush (15) is pressed onto the first rod (13) so as to realise the coupling between the first rod (13) and the second rod (12), and a further step in which a portion of the second rod (12) is shaped, so as match the shape of the human ear.
The present invention pertains to an integrated surface-emitting optoelectronic module and the method for making the same. The yellow light procedure is performed to define a V-groove width for disposing an optical fiber on a silicon substrate. After dry etching a vertical groove, a dielectric layer is grown on the surface of the silicon substrate to protect the vertical wall, preventing the groove from getting wider due to subsequent wet etching. A 45-degree mirror surface is formed so that an optoelectronic device can be disposed on the mirror surface in the flip chip method. The optoelectronic module employs a complete silicon substrate to assemble a surface-emitting optoelectronic devices and an optical fiber by passive alignment, and therefore can be free from misalignment due to separate assembly.
A blower assembly for a split air conditioner comprises a casing having a bearing trough in one end, a pair of rubber sleeve troughs in the other opposite end, a plurality of central hollow posts each having a threaded hole; and a blower having a plurality of blower units each having a shaft in one end and a hole in the other opposite end, at least one bearing seat, a plurality of bearings, at least one motor, a plurality of rubber sleeves mounted on the motor and together rested on the rubber sleeve troughs, and a plurality of plates for threadedly securing the rubber sleeves. By utilizing these components, a variety of advantages are obtained such as an increase of draft, more stable operation, no abnormal expansion and contraction, and noise reduction.
A vehicle side mirror that includes a forward scalp portion selectively removable from a forward side of the mirror housing. The scalp portion can be replaced with an extended auxiliary towing mirror scalp that conforms with the housing of the side mirror, and provides an extended auxiliary mirror attached thereto that is suitable for providing extended side viewing for towing purposes. In one particular embodiment, the towing scalp is interchangeable with an auxiliary turn signal light scalp to allow the towing vehicle to be readily converted to a suitable towing situation. In alternate embodiments, the towing mirror is slidably extendable from a support panel associated with a side mirror, or the tow mirror is pivotally extendable from a bottom surface of the side mirror.
Computer Architecture and Technology Dept., University of the Basque Country, Donostia, Spain ABSTRACT Due to the popularity of computer networks, detection of network attacks is a critical aspect of the security of the companies. As a consequence, any complete security package includes a network Intrusion Detection System (nIDS). This work focuses on nIDSs which work by scanning the network traffic. We combined classifiers based on packet header information with a service-independent payload based approach based on Probabilistic Suffix Trees (PST) to increase detection rates in non-flood attacks. This option is efficient since there is not need of payload processing and besides it outperforms systems based on the ad hoc payload processing proposed in kddcup99, detecting efficiently most of the attack types. This leads us to conclude that payload analysis based on PST is an efficient manner, with no service- or port-specific modeling, to detect attacks in network traffic. The invention relates to a fixing device, comprising two clamping jaws (33) arranged symmetrically to each other and each having a through hole (38) for a rod (12) or shaft passing through same, and an actuating piston (27) which can be actuated by means of a fluid in a piston chamber. The fixing device also comprises an actuating lug (30) which can be moved by the actuating piston for engaging the clamping jaws and moving them away from each other against the force of a spring (36) and about a pivoting bearing (35) from a first into an open second position. The center of each through hole is at a first distance to the pivoting bearing and at a second distance to the area where each actuating lug engages each clamping jaw. The invention is characterized in that the second distance is smaller than the first distance.
Geometric and geographic data have special demands on the database query mechanism. To store and retrieve huge amounts of geo data, special spatial databases thus offer geometric column types and spatial indexes. Even though spatial databases are getting more and more available, spatial operations are not standardized, thus applications cannot easily switch between different databases. Moreover, spatial databases are not available for all platforms. Mobile device platforms, e.g., usually only support standard databases without any spatial extensions. Our approach is thus based on relational standard databases and we introduce a spatial add-on that translates geometric queries to standard SQL. It provides a new spatial index, the Extended Split Index, which is optimized for the add-on. It especially avoids any index reorganization, makes use of one-dimensional non-spatial indexes available in SQL databases and heavily reduces the number of candidates that have to undergo further geometric checks. We demonstrate the strength of our approach with a performance evaluation based on more than 200 000 geo objects.
A composite rotary tool includes at least first and second regions comprising first and second materials, respectively. The first and second regions are autogenously bonded and differ with respect to at least one characteristic such as, for example, modulus of elasticity, hardness, wear resistance, fracture toughness, tensile strength, corrosion resistance, coefficient of thermal expansion, or coefficient of thermal conductivity. A method for producing the composite rotary tool includes placing a first metallurgical powder into a first region of a void of a mold, and placing a second metallurgical powder into a second region of the void. The first metallurgical powder differs from the second metallurgical powder, and at least a portion of the first metallurgical is brought into contact with the second metallurgical powder. The mold is compressed to consolidate the first and second metallurgical powders to form a compact, and the compact subsequently is sintered.
