
Most traditional IS adoption and acceptance research assumes that a majority of employees are resistant to the adoption of new technologies for work. However, phenomena like IT consumerization, bring your own device, and shadow IT illustrate that some employees actively introduce private IS to their organizations and thereby shape their own workplace. In this study, we investigate what leads employees to use alternative (private) IS for work. We draw on the cybernetic negative feedback loop as our theoretical framework to develop our research model. Our analysis indicates that satisfaction with organizational IS drives behavioral change. Further, our results show that not only the perceived performance of organizational IS predicts the employees’ satisfaction with organizational IS but also the perceived performance of private substitutes.
After the global financial crisis ten years ago, European directives in the financial sector demanded from financial organizations fast and complex adaptation regarding their organizational structure and compliance-related internal processes. Since then, these organizations primarily implemented isolated solutions to comply with the plethora of regulatory requirements. Still, no holistic approach is provided by neither research nor practice. In this paper we represent a reference model that uses enterprise architecture management (EAM) concepts to develop a reference compliance organization (R-CO) in a design science research approach. We contribute to practice by providing an approach for holistic regulatory compliance management. Further, we provide insights to reference model research by utilizing methods to the EAM domain.
Die Auslagerung von IT-Dienstleistungen gehort im kompetitiven deutschen Bankensektor zu einem etablierten Mittel des strategischen Managements. Die bestehende Literatur fokussiert vor allem auf die Erfolgsfaktoren. Der Outsourcing-Vertrag wurde zwar als wichtiger Faktor einer erfolgreichen Auslagerung identifiziert, diesbezugliche Forschung, die den Vertrag in den Mittelpunkt stellt, ist jedoch rar. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht explorativ den Zusammenhang zwischen der vertraglichen Ausgestaltung der Outsourcing-Ziele und dem wahrgenommenen Erfolg der Masnahme am Beispiel von funf deutschen Banken. Dazu wurde ein Rahmenwerk zur Abbildung der Ziele in vertraglichen Regelungen entwickelt, die realen Outsourcing-Vertrage der teilnehmenden Banken analysiert und die Ergebnisse im Anschluss in Interviews mit Experten, die mit den Auslagerungsprojekten vertraut sind, reflektiert. Die Ergebnisse haben gezeigt, dass die untersuchten Banken ihre Ziele nicht vollstandig erreicht haben. Es konnten Ruckschlusse uber ausgewahlte vertragliche Mechanismen gezogen werden und deren Einfluss auf den wahrgenommenen Projekterfolg. Insbesondere Regelungen, die im Vorfeld Unsicherheiten abbauen, sind dabei von groser Wirkung.
The way we consume mobility is drastically changing. Mobility is no longer only provided by traditional public transport and goods we own, like cars and bicycles, but also by service providers which offer mobility as a service, like car sharing companies. This new mobility ecosystem enables more flexibility, but also introduces additional complexity, especially for intermodal travel, i.e. reaching one’s destination by using multiple means of transportation. In this paper, we present an approach to combine mobility services in a customercentred way, which enables intermodal journey planning through an intuitive natural language interface. In contrast to other approaches, our architecture does not rely on the cooperation of mobility service providers, which has proven to be one of the main obstacles towards an integrated solution of multiple mobility services in the past.
Critical infrastructures, as the backbone of societal life, become increasingly dependent on IT. Thus, in order to ensure security and resilience, they face strict IT legislations and requirements. However, due to efficiency benefits, such as cost savings and increased flexibility, critical infrastructures increasingly adopt innovative IT models like cloud computing. This is despite the fact that migrating processes or systems into a cloud involves major risks for sensitive IT landscapes, since the control over data and security measures is delegated to cloud providers. In order to identify the current status quo of cloud computing in critical infrastructures, we conduct a systematic literature review, an analysis of cloud-based outsourcings of German critical infrastructures and expert interviews. Our findings provide an overview and a research agenda of cloud usage in critical sectors, which are helpful for critical infrastructure and cloud providers alike in order to adopt or manage cloud solutions.
The evolution of smart glasses and AR technology holds potential for support of mobile service processes. Yet, little research has focused on systematic identification of potential use cases. In this article, we present a use case taxonomy derived from multiple case studies employing literature search, ethnographies, interviews and focus groups from the domains of nursing, maintenance and logistics. Building upon the identified use cases we propose a framework of task-technology fit for smart glasses. The taxonomy in combination with the framework will allow researchers and practitioners to identify smart glass use cases that are of inter-domain relevance. Moreover, our artefacts enable a structured approach for identification and assessment of potential smart glass use cases without in-depth knowledge of the technology.
Due to the continuous growth of the Sharing Economy, its positive and negative consequences become highly visible in our daily life and are controversially discussed. The majority of existing studies on the impact of the Sharing Economy and corresponding actions stays on a descriptive level and is mostly limited to governmental intervention without incorporating other involved parties. This study provides empirical data on the impact of P2P accommodation sharing and derives precise and applicable recommendations for regulations, platform providers, and users of Sharing Economy services. We found that the consequences of this phenomenon depend on the kind of sharing and differs regionally. Our findings indicate that the Sharing Economy could be managed without necessarily imposing bans or adapting existing regulations.
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has enabled the development of gamification, i.e., “the use of game design elements in nongame contexts to engage users” [1, 2, p. 268]. Specifically, ICT research on gamification in a marketing context shows that a major purpose of gamification is to support branding and other customeroriented marketing goals [3]. The objective of this study is an exploration of the outcome of an advergame on customer’s attitude formation through the conceptual lens of the ABC model of attitudes. Advergames are serious games with marketing and promotion intent where brands or products appear with a specific relation to the game [4]. Present research on advergames refers to analyses of different game designs [5], but does not yet shed enough light on its impact on customer behavior. By obtaining deeper insights into affective, behavioral, and cognitive responses to an advergame, this study seeks to investigate the role of advergames in a tourism marketing context.
This paper analyzes requirements for a simulation game to teach Business Process Change (BPC) in the context of the digital transformation. First, the necessity of a simulation game to teach BPC as part of the digital transformation of enterprises is presented. Afterwards, a literature review and focus group discussions are conducted to analyze the requirements for teaching BPC. Finally, the resulting requirements are presented within a framework that describes the learner specification, pedagogy, context, and mode of representation for a simulation game to teach BPC. The presented study contributes to theory by providing a starting point for further research regarding the teaching of BPC in the context of the digital transformation. It further contributes to practice as the provided requirements can be used as basis to implement a simulation game to teach BPC.
Smart technologies, such as autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners recently gained broader attention and change incumbent private work routines. In this research paper, we take the consumers’ perspective and evaluate why consumers would intend or deter the use of vacuum cleaners. We investigate the positive influence of motivational drivers, such as trust, personal innovativeness, and hedonic values, as well as negative factors, such as perceived risk and perceived privacy violation. In this regard, we develop a research model that explains the consumers’ intention to use an autonomous robotic vacuum cleaner. We use survey data (N = 223) and structural equation modeling for our analyses. Our results outline that trust and perceived risk, as well as other explicit motivational factors influence the consumers’ intention to use robotic vacuum cleaners. Consequently, academic and practical implications are discussed.
Smart glasses-based information systems have the potential to support cycling training and other tasks which require high attention, by the presentation of relevant information into the user’s field of view to reduce (road) risks through less distraction and a hands free navigation. Nevertheless, when introduced in 2012 to the consumer market smart glasses faced acceptance problems. Therefore, acceptance is a crucial requirement in the system design. Making use of a Design Science Research approach, acceptability design requirements are derived and integrated into the design phase. This set of requirements for smart glasses-based information systems contributes to theory while specific design requirements and a design proposal for an accepted system contribute to the field.
Marketers who integrate influencers into their advertising strategy seek to improve information reach and information impact of their content. At the same time, influencers are overloaded with information. This design research study proposes a content-influencer-fit model to improve the effectiveness of influencer identification and management. Based on a systematic literature review, interview and usage data from an influencer-marketing platform, this study proposes an attribute framework for marketer-generated content at first. By integrating this framework into a predictive content-influencer-fit model it integrates the discussion on influencer and content characteristics. Finally, the model is able to select influencers on their likelihood to perceive marketergenerated content relevant, which is the basis for content-based recommendation.
MOOCs attract learners from various cultural backgrounds with differing educational beliefs and learning preferences. Research has long acknowledged that culture has an impact on the adoption and use of information technology. Cultural differences can cause conflicts, especially when learners provide each other with feedback during the peer assessment process. With this paper, we use a design science approach to create a cultural sensitive peer assessment process in MOOCs. Based on Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory we derive design elements and evaluate them in a qualitative and comparative study with Swiss and Chinese students. Our results show that different cultures prefer different designs. Consequently, our key contribution is the practical elaboration of design elements, which can be integrated in MOOCs to provide a better learning experience. Further, we contribute to cross-cultural theory by using an existing framework and adapting it to a new and relevant phenomenon: MOOCs.
In industry, product costs must be optimized to ensure long-lasting economic success. Cost optimization should already be performed during product development, in order to leverage its potential. Previous research has shown that information system support is greatly needed within early product cost optimization. Taking this on, we conducted interviews among discrete manufacturing industry experts, seeking to identify implementation challenges and, moreover, to develop a requirements model to overcome current challenges. To evaluate research results, we joined a co-innovation workshop at SAP SE, during which business domain experts from different industries successfully evaluated our approach. In summary, the concept introduces a promising solution to improve information system support during early product cost optimization.
Dynamic business environments call for companies’ organizational agility as being able to sense the changes in competitive environments and respond accordingly. A flexible IT environment facilitates this aim but contrasts with the structuration of IT organization through IT governance. We analyze how scaling agile frameworks as blueprints for agile IT organizations solve the contrast between structuration embedded in IT governance and agility. We see converging business and IT in structure and strategy as facilitator for resolving this conflict. In detail, we compare eight scaling agile frameworks on how IT governance is covered, how IT governance decisions are made and whether business IT convergence is achieved. We conclude that IT governance is still predominantly top down decision-making and focuses on traditional business IT alignment instead of business IT convergence. With our analysis, we provide a comprehensive base for organizations to choose from when approaching their specific agility challenges.
