
Based on dissection of 11 (4 m and 7f) adult wolves (Canis lupus L., 1758) kept in captivity, the morphology and mechanics of the ligaments and menisci of the femorotibial joint are described. Compared with the anatomical data of the dog (Canis lupus f. familiaris), the differences are discussed with respect to their importance for functional considerations.
Palm prints of 394 right-handers and 356 non-right-handers (left-handers and ambidexters) were evaluated regarding distance ad, ulnar shift, and relative horizontal triradius distance. Comparison between handedness groups produced some significant differences. The "graded distinction of dermatoglyphic traits" which was found in an earlier study has been confirmed. It has been suggested a modification of terminology for the position of axial triradii.
An additional branch of the right external carotid in the form of an unusual direct artery to m. masseter is described. It arose as a terminal branch along with the maxillary and superficial temporal arteries, ran in the substance of the parotid gland to supply the muscle on its lateral aspect. The pertinent anatomical literature is reviewed.
The embryonic gill material derived from the 1st gill arch gives rise to the respiratory epithelium of the mouth cavity for aerial respiration in Monopterus albus. A comprehensive gill mass formed by mixing of the embryonic gill materials derived from the dorsal ends of the gill arches (II to V) gives rise to the fused gill filaments on the 1st and IInd gill arches that subserve the purpose of utilizing O2 from air or water.
This 2nd part of our studies shows that the papilla foliata is fully developed in Pan, Cebus, and Macaca; in Prosimians the papilla foliata is well developed in Lemur and Chirogaleus. In Galago crassicaudatus, this papilla is missing. Among 3 individuals of Microcebus, the papilla foliata was differently developed: in 2 cases, the tongue exhibited only 2 on both sides and a very low folia. Taste buds were found in the epithelium of only one side of each folium. In the 3rd case, the folia of the papilla were developed only on one side of the tongue, whereas, on the other side, a typical papilla was missing. Instead of the papilla, the tongue of the same animal exhibited a hillock-like structure; it is a gustatory hillock which exhibited many taste buds. There were 3 gustatory hillocks in all of the specimens of Tupaia glis; they are situated on both sides of the tongue.
Ultrastructural changes of endothelial cells of the mesenteric microcirculatory bed were morphometrically and statistically examined on a total of 32 male R-rats 15, 30, 60, and 120 min after a traumatic-haemorrhagic shock (THS). Significant changes of various parameters were observed at all times after shock compared with a control group (8 animals). The findings can be divided into 2 main forms of reaction, namely activation and injury. At all times overlapping occurred and endothelial cells were considerably heteromorphic. Severe, possible irreversible injuries were rare.
The morphogenesis of the manubrium sterni was studied in a series of dated embryos of Tupaia belangeri. In addition to the sternal bands, the "paired suprasternal Anlage" takes part in the shaping of the manubrium sterni as reported by Klima (1968) for other mammals. It forms skeletal elements that mediate between the clavicle and the manubrium: the sternocalvicular ligament and the paired prominence on the dorsal surface of the manubrium, which underlies the clavicles. The paired prominence corresponds to the praeclavium present in some therians. Very probably, the discus articularis of the sternoclavicular articulation of some primates can be attributed to the suprasternal Anlage. There was, however, no indication that the ossa suprasternalia of primates develop from the suprasternal Anlagen: In Tupaia these Anlagen do not form the cranial part of the manubrium. Klima's "unpaired Anlage" develops differently in Tupaia than in other therians. It consists of connective tissue and is not integrated into the manubrium. It presents an insertion surface for the M. pectoralis major, which shifts its origin onto the manubrium, after the sternal bands have fused. The homology of the "unpaired Anlage" and the "pars chondralis interclaviculae" is doubtful.
The Lig. phrenicopericardiacum of wolves who lived in captivity has been examined with regard to the following aspects: origin, run, insertion, size (breadth and length), and form. The findings of investigations were compared with the corresponding ones stated in the literature for dogs; the correspondences as well as the differences between the both species were pointed out and the possible reasons for them were discussed.
The relations between skull measurements, brain mass, and body mass were investigated in 30 female miniature pigs, being 6 month old. The relatively low correlation coefficients between the variables indicate a high variability in skull shape. We found an allometric exponent of 0.236 for the relation between brain and body mass with a coefficient of determination of 0.29. Both measurements show a highest correlation with the arcus zygomaticus width, which shows close relations with the occipital height and condylobasal length.
Left testicles of 125 male patients with cirrhosis and 124 control males were subjected to histometric analysis. The ages of the patients with cirrhosis ranged from 31 to 92 a (mean = 59 a) and in controls, it was from 17 to 87 a (mean = 53 a). In the testicles in cirrhosis, the mean partial value of the V% of the spermatogenic epithelium statistically decreased significantly by a factor of 1.21, that of Leydig cells by 1.32 and interstitial tissue by 1.23, while the mean value of V% of tubular membranes increased by a factor of 1.68 and that of blood vessels by 1.48. The mean partial area of the tubular cross-sections significantly decreased in the cirrhosis group by a factor of 1.3, and by the same factor, the mean number of tubular cross-sections increased per mm2 of the whole testicular sectional plane. The total volume of the tubular system decreased in cirrhosis by a factor of 1.4, and the total weight of Leydig cells by 1.8 in relation to the control group. In complete cirrhosis only, the mean partial area of tubular cross-sections decreased by a factor of 1.15, and the total weight of Leydig cells by 1.42 in relation to incomplete cirrhosis. The type of cirrhosis and the degree of its inflammatory activity were without any significant influence (with the exception of isolated elements) on the differences in the quantitative composition of testicular tissue. However, such effect was exerted by the degree of fatty infiltration of the cirrhotic liver.
The aim of the paper was the histological evaluation of the influence of prolonged irritation or ligation of the vertebral artery on the brain stem and the spiral organs of guinea pigs. Electron microscopic studies of cochlear nuclei and spiral organs of 20 guinea pigs, both sexes, body weight of 250 to 300 g, were performed. By electron microscopic analysis, it was found that a greater lesion of spiral organs is observed in the group B (irritation of the vertebral artery at one side). This mostly concerns the outer hair cells, both the receptor and basic part. Lesion of the spiral organs of guinea pigs in the group C (ligature of the vertebral artery at one side) is only described in the basic part of the outer hair cells and their afferent nerve endings. It seems that the observed lesion is a secondary effect. Primary changes caused by ischemia are mostly observed in the cochlear nuclei.
A scanning electron microscopic study of the esophagogastric junction in the Cebus apella monkey showed the following characteristics: Numerous irregular folds with epithelial cells polyhedral in shape and in longitudinal extension; the luminal surface of the glandular epithelium presents a dome-shaped mucous cells with a cobblestone-like topography.
Oral administration of calcium, following by aluminium or together with Al, has been found to counteract the toxic effects of the latter metal as observed in histological preparations of liver, brain, kidney, and bone of laboratory albino rats. No such improvement was seen if Ca was administered after Al. The protection afforded by Ca against Al toxicity may be due to the previous occupation by Ca ions of the binding sites of Al ions in the affected organs.
The average volume of isolated Kupffer cells of rat liver is 821 +/- 64 microns 3, the average surface being 423 +/- 24 microns 2 (599 microns 2, with cell processes included). The surface structure (pseudopodia, lamellipodia, filopodia, microvilli) of isolated cells is much less developed than that of Kupffer cells in situ. By morphometric characterization volume densities are 0.1264 +/- 0.0077 (SE) for mitochondria and 0.3591 +/- 0.0169 for lysosomal structures. The volume of mitochondria amount to 0.79 +/- 0.04 microns 3.
The ependymal surface of the lateral cerebral ventricle, mesencephalic canal, and IVth ventricle of 13 male and female goats were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy. The lateral cerebral ventricle was covered mostly with thin cilia that might have club-like terminations on nucleus caudatus, the wide "naked" places with bleb-like protrusions occurred in the transition to cornu temporale during anestrous cycle. The ependymal surface of mesencephalic canal of female goats during anestrus was covered with abundant spherical protrusions. No other changes that could be related to the sexual differences were found.
2 osteological specimens of the atlanto-occipital region with accessory ossicles sitting on the dens axis are described. Considering the anatomical and radiological literature, the differential diagnosis of isolated accessory ossicles in the region of the dens axis is discussed (e.g. os odontoideum, ossiculum terminale BERGMANN persistens, ossifications of the ligamentous apparatus).
The morphology of the oesophageal mucosa of adult male and female albino rats (Rattus norvegicus) is studied by means of scanning electron microscopy of several levels. A precise surface analysis of the upper, middle, and lower portion of the esophagus is done and the results are compared with each other.
In order to analyze the complicated movements of the mandible as the open-closing movement and the protrusio are, it is useful to evaluate the basic kinematic principles and reduce them to simple technical constructions. Both the open-closing movement and the protrusio could be reduced to 4-bar links, which were used to simulate the movements with help of a computer. Besides, the polodes and the curves of points in the muscular attachments could be constructed. The 2 entirely different 4-bar links have 3 things in common: The resting system - cranium, the moving system - mandibula, and 1 of the 2 arms connecting these 2 systems - the ligamentum laterale. As this ligament is taut during movements it can be considered a "guiding ligament" representing 1 of the 3 determining components of the mandibular movements. The other of the 2 arms has no anatomical equivalent; this arm, however, is "replaced" by the 2 other determining components of the mandibular movements: the joint and the muscles. The curves, which the Caput mandibulae describes, are practically identical for the open-closing movement and the protrusio despite of the different 4-bar links and these curves exactly correspond to the Discus articularis, taut by the upper part of the M. pterygoideus lateralis. The muscles do not only just move the mandibula, but they are also the component, which can choose between the different mandibular movements. By means of the curves, which points in the muscular attachments describe, the function of the masticatory muscles could be analyzed exactly.
Histological examination of liver, kidney, and duodenum of rats fed a diet containing 10% (w/w) dry powdered seeds of Garcinia kola for 6 weeks revealed cellular changes that were not observed in pair-fed control animals. The main cellular changes observed in the rats fed on Garcinia kola diet included vacuolation of duodenal villous epithelial cells, numerous intracytoplasmic vacuoles in hepatocytes, and mild hydropic degeneration in cells of the renal proximal tubular epithelium. These changes are probably due to the flavonoids contained in G. kola seeds.
