Acetaldehyde at physiologically incompatible concentrations had a marked effect and ethanol an insignificant effect on monoamine oxidase activity. Neither inhibited the activity of catechol-O-methyl tansferase or the uptake of norepinephrine by synaptic vesicles; they also had little effect on 5-hydroxytryptophol synthesis in the brain.
In a comparison of self-rating and quantity-frequency measures of drinking, men tended to report themselves as lighter drinkers while women were more likely to classify their drinking patterns correctly. Among socially and economically deprived alcoholics, abstinence was not associated with treatment method, but was significantly related to indices of social stability. It is suggested that such alcoholics need socioeconomic incentives to become abstinent.
