
The authors describe clinical and morphological features of a rare tumor, pericardial mesothelioma. Their findings lead them to a conclusion that the epithelioid cell form (tubular and papillary variants) is the most incident histologic form of this tumor. They emphasize that life-time diagnosis of pericardial mesothelioma is of paramount importance because rational chemotherapy permits prolongation of the patient's survival.
Newly detected noninsulin--dependent diabetes mellitus is shown to have changes in phospholipid structure of erythrocytic membranes: a fall in total phospholipids, sphingomyelin, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidic acid, a trend to increasing lysophosphatidylcholine. The shifts go in parallel with lipid peroxidation activation. Carbohydrate metabolism compensation is not enough to eradicate the shifts. The process is also dependent on the properties of a sugar-reducing drug. Diabeton is recommended as beneficial in this respect, while metformin is efficient in combinations.
The paper presents a brief review of literature data on clinical effects of sleep deprivation (SD), short-term deprivation (up to 40 h), in particular. SD was studied for effects on patients with defected cerebral dopaminergic systems (parkinsonism, dystonic hyperkinesis, persistent lactorrhea-amenorrhea, acromegaly). The control was made using clinical, electrophysiological, psychological, motor and biochemical tests. SD was compared to L-Dopa, parlodel, lisenil action. SD is shown to have therapeutic and differential diagnostic significance in varying pathological conditions of cerebral dopaminergic systems.
As many as 287 patients with multiple myeloma were treated by poly- and monochemotherapy. The greater the selective antitumour action the higher the effect of polychemotherapy. The results of the treatment appeared to be influenced by the structure of the induction period.
To advance diagnosis and treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the authors have developed a number of specific diagnostic preparations basing on nDNA, RNA, cardiolipin immobilized into the three-dimensional lattice of polyacrylamide gel. Using such granulated antigenic preparations with magnetic properties, a correlation has been derived between SLE activity, visceral pathology and a level of specific antibodies. In view of a successful experimental use of the preparations as selective sorbents, they may be introduced into extracorporeal treatment. Immobilized granulated preparations can be used in immunofluorescent tests and enzyme immunoassays.
