
Quantity of unsoluble LDL complexes with heparin of different molecular weight in hypo-, normo-, and hyperlipemic blood serum in the presence of CaCl2 was estimated. At the same weight concentration the biggest quantity of LDL complexes are formed with heparin with heparin of the molecular weight 16000, the quantity is smaller with heparin of the molecular weight 5100, and it is the smallest with heparin of molecular weight 3700.
Rat collagen type I was digested with bacterial collagenase. The peptides obtained were submitted to gel filtration on Sephadex G-25. Two fractions differing in molecular weight (CDP I-3000 D and CDP II-1200 D) were obtained. These fractions administered to rats were found to have an inhibiting effect on the central nervous system (CNS) in Lat's test and the mobility of the animals recorded on a motimeter was found to be reduced. This effect was dependent on the peptide dose and occurred after intravenous (iv) as well as intraventricular (icv) injection.
The IgG, IgA and IgM levels in the serum of 23 patients with maxillofacial bacterial infections were determined. The high IgG level noted on admission further increased in the serum of 14 patients with acute inflammation and decreased in the serum of 10 patients with a chronic course. The level of IgM in the serum of patients with acute inflammation was higher than in the patients with chronic inflammation and decreased in both groups on the 7th day of treatment. The IgA level was high on admission in both groups and fell on the 7th day of treatment. Our results suggest that analysis of the serum level of IgG, IgA and IgM may be of diagnostic and prognostic value in the treatment of maxillofacial bacterial inflammation.
The effect of acetaldehyde administration for 4 weeks on antioxidant protection systems was investigated in liver of rats. Liver SOD activity was decreased from control value 542.4 U/g of tissue to 411.2 U/g of tissue in experimental group (24% decrease). GSH-Px activity was practically unchanged and liver CAT activity was significantly decreased (35%). Sulfhydryl compounds in liver non-proteins following ACH treatment were decreased from 4.22 mumol/g of tissue in control group to 2.86 mumol/g of tissue (23%). Furthermore acetaldehyde treatment caused significant increase in MDA level in liver (78% increase).
The authors present the results of laminectomy and laminoplasty in 20 patients with cervical myeloradiculopathy according to the JOA score. Improvement was noted in 74% of the patients after laminoplasty and in 70% of the patients after laminectomy. On the whole decompression is a good method of treatment in this kind of disease.
Authors have presented of 12 patients with irreparable nerve injuries treated by direct motor nerve implantation into muscle belly (direct muscular neurotization). Results were evaluated in Sunderland scale. Motor function of the neurotized muscles following 12 months from operation was in range of between M3 and M4.
Activity of fibrin stabilizing factor and contents of sulphydryl group in the homogenate of malignant skin carcinomas (melanoma, spinocellular carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, fibromyoma, liposarcoma) is higher than in the homogenate of benign neoplasm (lipoma, papilloma) and in the homogenate of the normal skin. Fibrin stabilizing factor activity and contents of sulphydryl group in the blood serum of subjects with malignant skin carcinomas is slightly lower than in the blood serum of subjects benign neoplasm and in healthy subjects.
Porcine blood platelets contain a relatively high amount of AMP deaminase (14.4 U per 10 11 cells). The enzyme showed sigmoidal behaviour as a function of AMP concentration with a S0.5 value (substrate concentration required for half-maximum velocity) of 3.6 and 4.0 mM in the presence of Na+ and K+ respectively. MgATP and MgADP at micromolar concentration activated the enzyme. Activation by saturating MgATP and MgADP in the presence of Na+ or K+ converted the rate versus substrate plots to hyperbolic with a dramatic decrease of S0.5. Phosphate at milimolar concentrations inhibited the enzyme and this inhibitory effect was totally reversed as the concentrations of MgATP and MgADP rised to physiologically high levels. Na+ and K+ activated the enzyme in the absence of MgATP and MgADP. Both cations largely enhanced the Vmax with Na+ being more potent. A comparison of the kinetic behaviour of the enzyme in vitro with the metabolite concentrations in vivo suggest that a substantial regulation can occur through changes in AMP and Na+ concentrations.
Quercetin inhibited aggregation of porcine blood platelets induced by collagen (IC50 = 0.2 mM), ADP (IC50 = 0.5 mM), thrombin (IC50 = 0.02 mM) and ionophore A23187 (IC50 = 1.5 mM). Preincubation of platelets with 10 mM LiCl abolished the inhibitory effect of quercetin on the aggregation of these cells induced by thrombin. Lithium ions per se caused potentiation of the aggregation of platelets induced by thrombin. Neither potentiation of aggregation by Li+, nor the abolishing of the inhibitory effect of quercetin by Li+ was observed when platelets were activated by ionophore A23187. Since lithium ions inhibit activity of enzymes degradating inositol phosphate, the obtained results can be interpreted to mean that quercetin affect platelet aggregation by the inhibition of inositol phosphates production.
The experiments were carried out on male Wistar rats, weighing 200-250 g. The animals received oil or oily solutions of carbaryl, parathion-methyl and IPO62 in doses of 0.5, 0.1 or 0.02 LD50. 1, 2, 4 or 24 h after the administration of pesticides, the activities of ChE and blood glucose level, liver glycogen level, FFA and TG concentrations in serum and TG level in liver were estimated. Comparing the enzymatic changes in acute intoxications with carbaryl, parathion-methyl or IPO62, in the same doses, it was found that mechanisms of efficacy of those compounds had different trends. Changes in the activities of such parameters as ChE in serum, BGR, AspAT and AlAT in serum and liver and blood glucose level depend on the dose of pesticides and this effect is observed for IPO62, parathion-methyl and carbaryl.
Assessment of working conditions in small slaughter-butcher workshops was based on the measurements of microclimate, illumination intensity, noise level, physical work, load, health risk factors and of other parameters which increased the work strenuousness. The analysis showed that the working conditions were harmful, mainly due to unfavourable microclimate, too poor illumination and the magnitude of physical load which reached mid-heavy and heavy levels. Based on performed analysis of occupational hazards a list of simple technical procedures which could improve working conditions was established by the authors.
In 56 patients with simple obesity blood glucose and insulin levels were assessed under fasting conditions and after oral glucose tolerance test. Besides, several lipid metabolism parameters like triglycerides, HDL--and LDL--cholesterol were estimated, too. Direct relationship was found between the impairment of glucose tolerance and the duration of obesity and the overweight. Obese persons with higher overweight and an average duration of obesity exhibited fasting hyperinsulinemia. Irrespective of the overweight magnitude and the degree of glucose tolerance impairment a more pronounced insulin reaction to glucose was observed. The same was found in the groups of persons with the history of obesity not exceeding 15 years. Moreover, in the group of obese persons with normal glucose tolerance, in those with overweight reaching 70% and with short and moderate duration of. Fasting obese hyperinsulinemic persons showed reduced concentration of HDL--obesity the levels of triglycerides were found to be elevated.
Urodynamic measurements including sphincterometry and cystometry were made in 36 women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Out of this number in 32 affected with SUI of stages I, II and III surgical treatment was applied. Control group were 7 women without SUI symptoms. Marshall-Marchetti operation in the modification of Durfée or of Burch was made in the space of Retzius. The procedure was followed by simultaneous pararectal suturing of the wedges of levator ani muscle. The mean values of urodynamic measurements were compared using Student's "t" test and paired test. No evident difference was found when average values of pre-operative +cystic manometry were compared in particular groups of patients using statistical analysis. Sphincterometry made in women who had been effectively operated on showed statistically significant higher values of urethral closure pressure. Higher values of post-operative urodynamic measurements can speak for a complete recovery of the patients.
Representative sociomedical studies included inhabitants of the Białystok 3 housing estates. The inhabitants have been under the care of district dispensaries. Most of the inhabitants do not attend the dispensaries or make so irregularly and at limited manner. Only pediatric out-patient clinics accomplish the generality of health care in their districts while general out-patient clinics are attending on those over 60 years old. Assessment of dispensaries according to formal-administrative criteria does not agree with the appraisal of the residents showing astonishing discrepancy.
Rat fibrosarcoma induced by methylcholanthrene exhibited proteolytic activity against type I collagen at acidic range of pH values. This activity was not only collagen-specific as it was able to cause hemoglobin degradation to low-molecular products. No collagenolytic activity was found near physiological values pH.
Post-operation results of stress urinary incontinence treatment have been assessed and subjected to statistical analysis in 667 patients. The elaboration of the results was based on case history data, inquiries and control ambulatory examinations. Diagnostic procedures included sphincterometry, cystometry, cystoscopy, cystography and provocation test like coughing. Vaginal and urine biocenosis was always assessed microbiologically. The Marshall-Marchetti operation as modified by Durfée and Burch was made within the space of Retzius. Complementary procedure consisted in suturing levator ani muscles after previous bilateral opening of pararectal space within perineum. Third pair of sutures was placed according to the authors' own modification during the Durfée operations. The results of surgical treatment of SUI performed by the authors do not differ in principle from those reported by others. A small number of relapses the authors ascribe to local and systemic processes of aging which diminish the effectiveness and the value of previously made correction of urethra and of the bladder bottom topography.
Already Cushing pointed out that intracranial volume, thus the intracranial pressure, or ICP should exhibit an equilibrium state. Brain receives about 15% of the heart stroke volume. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) which is under control of an autoregulatory system, results from the cerebral perfusion pressure, or CPP being the difference between the mean arterial pressure and ICP. Intracranial pathology results in a reduced CBF, that under extreme conditions can lead to death. The up-to-date experiments indicate that both the ICP and arterial pressure can be successfully monitored for a quite long period. These observations make the choice of optimum therapy easier. According to some researchers such a monitoring has been introduced as a regular method of the neurosurgical intensive care.
Adaptation of "Spekol 10" with Ti Mi attachment for measurement of platelet aggregation (by the turbidimetric method) in small samples of platelet suspensions (0.2-0.4 ml) is described. This set can be further easily modified for simultaneous recording of aggregation and ion concentration in the same platelet sample.
Rats fed standard diet were intoxicated during 4 weeks with ethanol at the dose of 0.6 g/100 g of the body weight. This poisoning causes vacuolar degeneration, disappearance of glycogen granules, steatosis of hepatocytes and focal necrosis changes in the liver. The intake of food with cysteine at the dose of 0.012 and 0.024 g/100 g/24 hrs markedly prevents histopathological changes in the liver of rats intoxicated with ethanol. Larger amounts of cysteine (0.044 g/100 g/24 hrs) intensify histopathological changes caused by ethanol in the liver of rats.
Homogenate is prepared in 0.25 M sucrose. Cellular organelles are precipitated by acidification to pH 5.0 and removed by centrifugation at 1500 x g during 30 minutes. In the obtained cytosol which does not contain lysosomes free activity of cathepsin D is determined.
