
The findings are based on a large number of animal experiments in which we used various contrast media. One of these is Angiopac, an iodine emulsion produced by the Union Chimique Belge. This contrast medium has been widely used for angiography on the Continent and in selected cases in this country. It is claimed by the makers to be safe for injection into human beings. However, we have so far used it only for animal experiments, as transient toxic reactions have been reported. The first experiments on direct placentography were by Ehrhardt (1933). The war put a stop to those experiments and we decided, in 1947, to continue them. We were at first faced with the lack of any suitable contrast media. At our request Dr. K. Cadenbach of Hamburg, who years ago had produced a similar contrast medium for Ehrhardt, was persuaded to produce small quantities for us. Our first results were reported in 1949. The aim was to find a contrast medium which is reasonably safe, easily available and sufficiently selective to produce a placental shadow. Earlier experiments by Degkwitz (1938) had shown that certain contrast media are stored by the reticuloendothelial system for long enough to allow the radiographic demonstration of viscera in which reticuloendothelial cells are predominant. In our experiments on hepato-lienography (1949) we showed that the contrast medium we then used was also stored in the placenta of the guinea pig and produced a distinct placental shadow.
