Abstract From early on Latin grammarians were fascinated by the relationship between Latin and Greek. When they started to describe their own language, they borrowed extensively from Greek grammatical terminology, which they tended to translate into Latin. In the grammatical literature references to the structure of Greek are frequent, usually serving didactic purposes. In this paper, I deal with a treatise written by the fifth-century homme de lettres Macrobius, in which he compared the two languages. His perspective differed from that of common grammarians because his comparison was inspired by intellectual curiosity rather than didactic considerations.
The present study investigates who was considered authoritative in matters of language in the 16th and 17th centuries as well as how grammar authors position themselves with respect to these authorities. It evaluates whether a shift in referencing norms may already be observed from the 16th to the 17th century in these regards. As it is claimed that in England the 16th century marks the beginning of English grammar writing (McCarthy 2020: 19-20) and the 17th century saw a shift in favour of English being recognized as a separate academic discipline (Beal 2004: 102), one can ask if and how onomastic - that is, name-based - references, appear in those grammars and how they can be categorized. One of the findings of this study is that the onomastic references found in the 16th-and 17th-century grammars can be categorized along the six semantic categories suggested in previous work for 19th-century grammars (Busse et al. 2020: 11-12). These include, for example, quotations, opinions, or mere mentions. To account for a possible shift in reference strategies over time, these semantic categories were reevaluated by means of inter-rater reliability (IRR) in the 16th-and 17th-century context. Our main findings show that while some 16th-century authors put emphasis on Latinate authors, others embrace moving away from the Latinate approach by not referring to the established Latinate authorities at all or only rarely. A significant shift in onomastic referencing can be observed from the 16th to the 17th century, however the Latinate authorities still held significant ground in the 18th century grammar texts.

This article challenges the widespread textbook claim that "etymology boasts a venerable history of its own" (Malkiel), which implies that the history of etymology predates that of linguistics. On the contrary, it is argued that etymology, defined as "the search for the relationships-formal and semantic - that link a word with another unit that historically precedes it and from which it derives" (Zamboni), is a scientific discipline with a much shorter history than (synchronic) linguistics, mathematics or physics. The reason is obvious: despite occasional affirmative answers to questions such as "Did the ancient Greeks and Romans do historical linguistics?", historical linguistics as a scientific discipline dates back little more than two centuries, while any text/author from earlier periods has no place in the history of a modern scientific discipline comparable to that, for example, of Archimedes in the history of physics and geometry. With this in mind, it is proposed here to distinguish sharply an etymology2, i.e. scientific etymology, from its pre-modern precursors, indicated instead with the label etymology1. The latter, it is argued, has three features that distinguish it from etymology2: the 'truth-seeking', the 'non-uniqueness', and the 'semantic' bias. The ways in which these biases affect discussions about the origin of words of the type defined here as etymology1 are illustrated by drawing on various texts and cultures, from Antiquity to the 18th century.
Generative linguistics has a longer prehistory than most linguists realize. The rewriting systems that Chomsky brought into linguistics as generative grammars were explicitly defined more than a century ago, as part of a project to formalize inference rules in logic, and were later applied to studying mathematical properties of certain kinds of infinite sets. Their developer was the mathematician and logician Emil Leon Post, whose work was inspired by Clarence Irving Lewis and Cassius Jackson Keyser. Post also proved the first two theorems about what linguists now call generative capacity. The idea of deploying Post's systems within linguistics was first suggested in 1950 by the logician Paul Rosenbloom. I review the relevant pre-1950 work, and explore the reasons for its having remained so little known among linguists.
Antoine Meillet's theory of sociolinguistic change finds one of its most accomplished expressions in his article "Le d & eacute;veloppement des langues." Included in the posthumous volume Linguistique historique et linguistique g & eacute;n & eacute;rale (1936), it is often read out of its original context (cf. Swiggers 2015). In fact, Meillet wrote this essay for philosopher Jacques Chevalier's 1929 special issue on the concepts "continuous" and "discontinuous" in science (Chevalier 1929a). Titled Continu et Discontinu, Chevalier's volume brought together papers of researchers from various fields spanning epistemology, evolution, philosophy, history of science, physics, mathematics, chemistry, law, and Indo-European linguistics. The present article discusses Chevalier's philosophical program and examines how each of the volume's papers interacts with it. I argue that re-reading Meillet's essay within the context of Chevalier's epistemological project not only reveals its function in Chevalier's editorial strategy, but also shows how this strategy compelled Meillet to articulate his theory more systematically while allowing us to reassess the role of the conceptual pair "continuous" and "discontinuous" in his work.
Although coordination is a basic and universal syntactic construction, the conjunction is a grammatical category or part of speech that has often been neglected in the history of linguistics. The cause can be traced to the lack of correspondence between the morphosyntactic features and the functional meanings of this category, which should rather be placed on a grammatical continuum between coordination and subordination. The difficulty of an unambiguous definition is already evident in the reflections of ancient grammarians. The case of missionary grammarians at the beginning of the modern era represents a turning point, given the difficulty of adapting the classifications of the European tradition to indigenous languages characterized by a completely different morphosyntactic system. The aim of this paper is to analyze the first grammars of Aymara and Quechua written by missionary grammarians working at the school of Juli, which has been described as a true 'linguistic laboratory' of the Society of Jesus. Given that the notions of subordination and dependent sentence are commonly attributed to the Port-Royal grammarians (1660), and thus an explicit distinction between subordinating and coordinating conjunctions had not yet been formalized at the time, I attempt to reconstruct this distinction by analyzing the types of clauses that are explicitly defined as dependent and associated with specific conjunctions. The textual analysis suggests that, as early as the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, European grammarians were already aware of the distinction between coordination and subordination, thus challenging prevailing assumptions in the historiography of linguistic thought.
This paper presents a case study of the linguistic work conducted by the German Lutheran missionaries Christian G. Teichelmann (1807-1888) and Clamor W. Sch & uuml;rmann (1815-1893) in producing grammars and dictionaries of Indigenous languages of South Australia, and the so-called 'Adelaide School' of linguistic description that emerged through their efforts and those of their missionary and colonial colleagues. The political circumstances through which the Lutheran mission to South Australia came into being and the material conditions under which missionary activity was undertaken are examined. This is followed by an investigation of the Adelaide School's place in international scientific networks and its broader contributions to linguistic scholarship. Comparisons are drawn with other instances of linguistic and ethnographic fieldwork in Australia and the Pacific of the time. Dutch lexicography spread widely in Japan during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, prompting Japanese scholars to develop methodologies for its reception. The two often-cited Dutch-French dictionaries by Fran & ccedil;ois Halma and Pieter Marin became the main link between the Sino-Japanese and European lexicographic traditions. This contribution analyses Japanese manuscripts to examine how Dutch lexicography was received and repurposed for the needs of the Japanese scholars. Marin and Halma compiled their works intending to aid Dutch learners of French looking up unfamiliar words, aware that this also implied an unprecedented cataloguing of the Dutch lexicon. When these dictionaries reached Japan, the local scholars had different necessities, having to make the most of these rare books. The Japanese used them not only to look up words, but also as models to base the first Dutch-Japanese dictionaries and, most uniquely, as sources for the study of Dutch grammar. European lexicography was different enough from what the Japanese were used to, that they felt compelled to explain in detail how to consult a Dutch dictionary, often without referencing comparable local sources, evidencing the perceived differences between the two lexicographic traditions.
When missionaries first arrived in China, they encountered important challenges in translating Chinese terms into Western languages and Christian concepts into Chinese. This complex process involved numerous contributors over time, leading to translational choices that were often revised as they proved inadequate. The journey of translation varied in complexity for different terms. Mandarin-European dictionaries compiled by missionaries provide valuable insights into these processes. These dictionaries capture the definitions of Chinese characters at specific historical moments, reflecting the authors' intentions. This article examines the character ren (sic), central to Chinese philosophy, to illustrate how comparing entries in Chinese-European dictionaries reveals insights into both the history of the dictionaries and the translation processes. We analyze ren's definitions in various lexicographic sources, from early Sino-Portuguese dictionaries by Jesuits to Mandarin-Spanish dictionaries by Dominicans, and finally to the Dictionarium Sinico-Latinum by Franciscan Basilio Brollo (1648-1704). This comparative analysis highlights differences and connections between dictionaries, assesses their informative value regarding authorship and dating, and explores the missionaries' diverse translation strategies.
Jacob Grimm (1785-1863) is one of the best-known German linguists of the early nineteenth-century. His influential volume, Deutsche Grammatik (1826, part two), deals with German word-formation. That work comments on the development of derivational affixes from former words, and thus contributes to affixoid studies. Much current work on affixoids utilizes Stevens' (2005) criteria to determine whether an affixoid is on hand, and this paper thus uses Stevens' work as a backdrop to situate Grimm's related theoretical claims. A number of Grimm's claims support current linguistic theory on affixoids, and several claims appear to offer fruitful insights for further investigation.
In 1993, Hoffmann published a study on the historical development of the term 'periphrasis' in grammars, which originally indicated a figure of speech, used for stylistic and rhetorical purposes. To date, Hoffmann's article remains the only contribution to the question. In this paper, we further investigate the history of the morphosyntactic category of 'periphrasis', with special attention to practical grammars, which are not discussed by Hoffmann. The analysis of grammars dating from Antiquity to the Enlightenment confirms Hoffmann's findings with additional data, and sheds new light on the metalinguistic development of the morphosyntactic category of 'periphrasis' over the centuries. From the late 15th to the 18th century, grammars, especially practical, of many European and non-European languages attest a notable terminological richness to indicate analytic constructions, understood as morphosyntactic categories (comparative and superlative, compound tenses). These grammars feature not only periphrasis and circumlocutio, which are already found in the earlier tradition, but also the verb related to the latter, circumloquor, circumscribo, and language-specific expressions, such as rodeo in Spanish and Portuguese, and tour in French. Despite the development and persistence of the grammatical connotation of periphrasis and analogous terms, 'periphrasis' also retains its original rhetorical usage throughout the Modern Age.
This article analyzes the anonymous and undated dictionary Breve compendio del vocabulario de compuestos en lengua mandarina , a work that was most likely written by a Dominican. The Dominicans not only compiled bilingual dictionaries translating from Spanish to Chinese but also from Chinese to Spanish. The dictionaries attributed to Francisco Díaz contain Chinese characters, with each lemma featuring a single character, arranged alphabetically according to the romanization of these characters. The lemmas often include examples in which these characters appear in combination with others. These polysyllabic examples were referred to at the time as complexos or compuestos . The Breve compendio , as the title indicates, is a dictionary aimed to include exclusively these so-called compuestos . This article is a first attempt to analyze these compuestos . What criteria did the author use to select these compuestos ? What were his pedagogical-didactic intentions? Finally, we will compare a selection of lemmas with two versions of Francisco Díaz’s Vocabulario de letra China , and one version of Basilio Brollo’s Dictionarium Sinico-Latinum to gain a better understanding of the diffusion of knowledge in the field of Western bilingual lexicography in China.
This article provides a brief description of a Hokkien grammar held in the Archives of the University of Santo Tomás in Manila which, as far as I am aware, has not been studied before. The article is only meant to provide a brief description of the Arte Sangley and some preliminary observations pending a more thorough study of the grammar. It contains some suggestions about its authorship and the date on which it was produced. It also compares, where appropriate and within the constraints of its limited scope, the Arte Sangley with the Arte de la lengua Chio Chu and Francisco Varo’s Arte de la lengua mandarina .
