Objective: This study examined the effects of high birth weight (HBW), >4 kg and low birth weight (LBW), <2.5 kg, on an individual’s risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS) later in life; with consideration of both maternal and individual lifetime behavioral, social, and environmental factors. Methods: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) dataset was used to identify individuals with MetS and individuals who reported either HBW or LBW. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between LBW and HBW with MetS, while controlling for various social and demographic factors of participants and parents. Results: The study population was 55% female, 22% African-American, with an average age of 63 years. The prevalence of reported LBW among males and females was 1.7% and 4.6%, respectively. The prevalence of reported HBW among males and females was 8.7% and 5.0%, respectively. A relationship between LBW and future risk of MetS was attenuated by pertinent socioeconomic and lifestyle-related risk factors that defined both the participant and their familial influence, particularly maternal age at the time of birth. An association between HBW and MetS was not found. Conclusions: This work does not support an association between HBW nor LBW with adult MetS. The development of MetS may be associated with subject’s socioeconomic and lifestyle factors.
Introduction: Nuts, seeds and legumes are all nutrient-dense foods. Preclinical and clinical studies show that legumes are functional foods that modulate biological processes that facilitate obesity, including thermogenesis, visceral fat accumulation, and satiety. Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the consumption of legumes and oilseeds consumed locally in children living in the KA±rklareli (Thrace) region and to evaluate their relationship with anthropometric measurements. Methods: A total of 1075 volunteer students and their families, 513 (47.7%) girls and 569 (52.3%) boys, between the ages of 3-9, studying in pre-school and primary schools, participated in the study. The students' anthropometric data (body weight, height, waist circumference, neck and wrist circumference) were taken. Results: In this study conducted with 1075 children, 47.7% (513 people) of the participants were girls and 52.3% were boys (562 people). When their legume consumption was examined, it was found that 2.5% every day, 29.3% between 3-5 days a week, 45.3% once a week, 7.2% every 15 days, rarely 7.5% and 8.2% of the participants who stated that they did not consume it. The most common legumes consumed by the participants were dried beans, lentils and chickpeas. The most common oilseeds consumed “3-5 days a week” were determined as walnuts, roasted hazelnuts and almonds. There was no statistically significant effect of legumes and oilseed consumption on anthropometric values. Conclusion: Legumes and oilseed consumption habits did not have a significant effect on growth and development. However, weakness, stunting and obesity continue to be important problems as indicators of insufficient and unbalanced food consumption. Background: The rate of childhood obesity is rising across the world. The relationship between the level of adiponectin, which is a known marker for metabolic syndrome, and Abdominal Obesity (AO) among children are reported in various reports worldwide; however, there has not been such a research in Vietnam. This study aims to investigate adiponectin levels and its association with abdominal obesity among Vietnamese schoolchildren. Methods: We included 821 grade six students from four randomly selected secondary schools in Hanoi for anthropometric measurements and collecting biochemical samples for blood adiponectin, HbA1C, HDL-C, and LDL-C concentration analysis. AO was identified by waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) of ≥ 0.5. Mann-Whitney’s U test was performed to compare abdominal and non-abdominal obesity among boys and girls. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the association of AO and body mass index (BMI) with adiponectin levels. Results: Adiponectin levels were lower in boys (7.65 µg/mL) than in girls (8.79 µg/mL). The percentage of boys with adiponectin levels less than the median was 39.64% in the non-AO group and 66.45% in the AO group, while the percentage for girls were 47.01% in the non-AO group and 74.07% in the AO group. When adiponectin levels were below median, the adjusted odd ratios (aOR) of AO and BMI at 95% confidence intervals were 2.89 (1.74-4.89) in boys and 2.55 (1.27-5.12) in girls and 2.73 (1.66-4.49) in boys and 1.96 (1.16-3.31) in girls, respectively. Conclusions: Regardless of sex, among schoolchildren, adiponectin levels are significantly different between abdominal and non-abdominal obesity groups. Adiponectin generates a clearer effect on AO in boys, and the aOR of AO is higher than BMI aOR. These results suggest that preventing AO could improve the levels of adiponectin in schoolchildren, which will consequently prevent metabolic syndrome and non-communicable diseases in the future.
Childhood Studies to become more public with the added caveat that it should retain its critical rigor while doing so. Yet, despite my stated preference, my interest with this editorial is less to convince that this is indeed a good move for the field and more to encourage a discussion around the issue.
