
Since coronavirus disease 2019 mainly affects the respiratory system, pulmonary rehabilitation has increased its importance during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Healthcare professionals must use appropriate personal protective equipment during rehabilitation of patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Comorbidities of the patient should be taken into consideration while organizing the rehabilitation program. Clinical manifestations range from asymptomatic to acute respiratory distress syndrome. There is no need for pulmonary rehabilitation in asymptomatic patients. Pulmonary rehabilitation may be recommended in patients with mild-moderate disease. It is advised that patients be followed up during the rehabilitation period. Positioning and passive range of motion exercises are beneficial in preventing immobilization complications in patients with critical illness. Post-coronavirus disease 2019 rehabilitation program should be established according to the needs and functional levels of the patients.
The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 continues its effects around the world with its new variants. Coronavirus disease 2019 infection may continue with a post-coronavirus disease period, which is characterized by high morbidity apart from the acute and subacute phases. Host immune response quality and inflammasome-induced uncontrollable inflammatory response take a role together in the pathogenesis of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related corona- virus-2 infection. Therefore, treatment of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 infection should basically include 3 measures: Viral replication, inflammation, and tissue damage control. Today, there is no effective therapy to control these points. At this point, preclinical studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cells can control inflammatory reactions and lung damage through both immune regulation and inflammasome control. Subsequently, controlled clinical studies on severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 infection confirm their ability, indicating that mesenchymal stem cells may be a safe treatment option while reducing severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2-related morbidity and mortality. On the other hand, post-coronavirus syndrome is as important as acute coronavirus syndrome, it is a picture that can cause morbidity and mortality. Mesenchymal stem cell application can prevent the development of post-coronavirus syndrome through the mechanism of an inflammasome. However, there is no study that analyzes the effects of current treatments using mesenchymal stem cells in the post-coronavirus disease period, and that tests the use of mesenchymal stem cells when post-coronavirus syndrome develops. In this respect, studies that test the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cells in the post-coronavirus disease period are certainly needed.
OBJECTIVE:Epidermal growth factor receptor mutations are the second most common oncogenic driver event in non-small cell lung cancer. We aimed to compare the first generation erlotinib treatment with the second generation afatinib treatment in patients with non- small cell lung cancer with epidermal growth factor receptor exon 21 L861Q mutation.MATERIAL AND METHODS:Progression-free survival and overall survival of 30 non-small cell lung cancer patients treated with erlo- tinib or afatinib due to single epidermal growth factor receptor L861Q positivity were compared retrospectively. The number of patients included in the first, second, and third treatment line was 15 (50.0%), 11 (36.7%), and 4 (13.3%), respectively.RESULTS:There were 23 patients in the erlotinib arm and 7 patients in the afatinib arm. Median progression-free survival was 12.8 months in the erlotinib group and 9.3 months in the afatinib group. Median overall survival in erlotinib and afatinib groups was 77.9 months and 30.3 months, respectively. No statistically significant difference was found in the comparison of these survival times.CONCLUSION:Survival times of erlotinib and afatinib treatment are similar in patients with a single epidermal growth factor receptor L861Q mutation. In patients receiving tyrosine kinase inhibitors treatment, the female gender has a positive effect on progression-free survival, and being a non-smoker has a positive effect on overall survival. In patients with rare mutation exon 21 L861Q positivity, both first-generation and second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors should be considered.
OBJECTIVE:The objective of this study is to analyze chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation rates and the effect of patients' behavioral changes on the exacerbations during the pandemic. MATERIAL AND METHODS:This study was conducted in a reference hospital for chest diseases and patients who were hospitalized with an exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease between March 11, 2019, and March 11, 2020, were designated. Patients' chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations requiring emergency department visits and/or hospitalization were com- pared between the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods. Each patient was surveyed with 25 questions using telemedicine. RESULTS:Of all the 256 patients, 203 (79%) were male and the mean age was 66 ± 10 years. Compared to the previous year, emer- gency department visits and hospitalizations in our hospital were significantly lower and less frequent (P < .0001, for both). Smoking habits decreased in 9% of patients, and 60% had hardly spent time outdoors. Only 3 patients reported to spend time indoors. The household mask-use rate while contacting the patient was 50%. As a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patient, 33% expressed themselves as "feeling better." Overall, 92(36%) patients were recorded not to have any exacerbation, and 34 (13%) to have no attacks of worsening were managed at home. Novel exacerbation risk was found to independently correlate with younger age (odds ratio: 0.944, CI: 0.904-0.986, P = .010) and having more frequent episodes of exacerbation in the pre-pandemic period (odds ratio: 1.2, CI: 1.025-1.405, P = .023). CONCLUSION:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients specifically benefited from confinements, restrictions, and lifestyle changes. Further studies are needed to better identify the most critical factors leading to these positive outcomes. A permanent patient management guideline for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients could be formulated where the weight of lifestyle factors is elevated.
OBJECTIVE:Respiratory disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, mainly in homozygous PI*ZZ individuals. However, this association is uncertain in subjects with other deficiency genotypes. The objective of this study was to assess, in the context of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, the existence of further risk factors that have been associated with respiratory diseases.MATERIAL AND METHODS:Lung function was assessed by spirometry in a sample of 1334 patients with a known genotype for the SERPINA1 gene whose serum alpha-1 antitrypsin levels had been previously determined. Patients with a normal genotype (PI*MM) were compared to 389 patients carrying a deficiency allele.RESULTS:Statistically significant associations were detected between (i) PI*ZZ genotype and abnormal FEV1 values (χ2 = 26.45; P <.0002), FEV1/FVC (χ2 = 14.8; P < .02) or forced mid-expiratory flow 25%-75% (χ2 =22.66; P < .0009); (ii) chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and PI*ZZ odds ratio: 26.5; 95% CI: (2.6-265.9); P <.005 and or PI*SS genotype odds ratio: 9; 95% CI: (2-40.1); P < .004; (iii) prevalence of COPD in PI*MZ subjects and smoking habit (P < .01), low body weight (P < .01) or older age (P < .0001).CONCLUSION:The PI*ZZ and PI*SS genotypes seem to be associated with the prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Tobacco use, low body weight, and older age are risk factors that increase the probability of prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by up to 70% in PI*MZ individuals.
OBJECTIVE:Despite the clinical use of mechanical ventilation having well-documented benefits, it can be associated with complica- tions and adverse physiological effects that can impact mortality rates. There are few studies that examine complications associated with mechanical ventilation in children and the factors associated with complications in detail. This study aimed to investigate adverse events associated with mechanical ventilation in pediatric patients and to compare the epidemiology of complications associated with mechanical ventilation. MATERIAL AND METHODS:The medical records of patients in a tertiary care pediatric intensive care unit who were mechanically ventilated between January 1, 2013, and July 31, 2017, were evaluated. RESULTS:A total of 187 patients were included in the study, 105 boys (56.1%) and 82 girls (43.9%), and 45 (24.1%) patients experienced complications. The total number of mechanical ventilation days was 1100. Atelectasis (12.3%), post-extubation stridor (8.5%), ventilator- associated pneumonia (5.4%), and pneumothorax (5.4%) were most commonly observed complications. CONCLUSION:Complications of mechanical ventilation in the pediatric population still occur frequently. In this study, the incidence of atelectasis was high, and also, incidences of ventilator-associated pneumonia and pneumothorax were low.
OBJECTIVE: Since the lung is the most affected organ by COVID-19 disease, we aimed to evaluate the pulmonary function test, presence of hypoxemia, and Post-COVID-19 Functional Status Scale in 3- to 6-month post-COVID period. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Post-COVID-19 Functional Status Scale, pulse oxygen saturation, and pulmonary function test were evaluated in 67 outpatients/inpatients after 3-6 months following COVID-19 (positive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction on nasopharyngeal swab) disease. Pre-COVID pulmonary function test parameters were available in 33 patients, and these were compared with post-COVID pulmonary function test parameters. Results: We found 20.9% (14 patients) restrictive and 11.9% (8 patients) obstructive patterns in pulmonary function test. Of those with forced vital capacity < 80%, 53.3% were patients without known lung diseases. When pulmonary function test values before and after COVID-19 were compared, only a loss of 130 mL in forced expiratory volume in 1 second was determined (P = .005). About 65.4% of the patients with dyspnea were in the group without a lung disease (P = .002) and 66.7% of patients with forced expiratory volume in 1 second and forced vital capacity of <80% had dyspnea complaint (P = 0.048, P = 0.012). Oxygen saturation was lower in patients with lung disease (P = .012) and was significantly lower in patients with forced vital capacity < 80% (P = .023). No correlation was found between Post-COVID-19 Functional Status Scale and pulmonary function test parameters (P > .05). Smoking, hospitalization, oxygen support, and the severity of computed tomography involvement did not impact pulmonary function test. Conclusion: In post-COVID patients, the major disorder in the respiratory function test was determined as a restriction. However, advanced tests such as lung volumes and carbon monoxide diffusing capacity (DLCO) measurement and high-resolution lung tomography are needed to differentiate in terms of physical functional limitation or parenchymal fibrosis.
The editorial on climate change and biodiversity published in over 220 health journals in September had two main demands: keep global temperature increases below 1.5C above pre-industrial levels to avoid catastrophic damage to health; and accept that this can be achieved only by rich countries making bigger cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and transferring substantial resources to the countries most vulnerable the effects of climate change.Although the mantra of COP26 was “keep 1.5C alive,” the pledges made by countries to reduce emissions are insufficient to keep the temperature rise to below 1.5C.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in a group of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study comprised 48 stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients who were diagnosed and categorized using the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease 2017 criteria. The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients was determined using noninvasive biomarkers and imaging methods. Steatosis was detected using magnetic resonance mDIXON-Quant sequence imaging, while fibrosis was detected using the acoustic radiation force impulse and FIB-4 index. Results: A total of 58.3% of the patients investigated had a fat level of 5%, and nearly a quarter of them had a fat content of 10% or more, and 45.8% of the patients studied had severe hepatic fibrosis. The Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) index revealed advanced fibrosis in 18.75% of them. No statistically significant association was found between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease groups of studied patients and the presence of steatosis and fibrosis (≥F2) using acoustic radiation force impulse. The presence of fibrosis, however, was statistically significant linked with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease groups of examined patients using the FIB-4 index. γ-Glutamyl transferase and alkaline phosphatase levels were greater in Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease 3/4 and C/D groups. Conclusion: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is a common comorbidity in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and should be included in the list of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease comorbidities.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate attitude and practice toward use of regular tobacco cigarettes and electronic cigarettes among pregnant women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 1123 pregnant women participated on a voluntary basis in this questionnaire survey. Maternal characteristics, cigarette consumption parameters, and personal opinions regarding the adverse effects of smoking during pregnancy were evaluated. Results: Active smokers composed 12.4% (9.4%: regular tobacco cigarettes, 3.0%: electronic cigarettes) of the study population. Smoking during the current pregnancy, particularly via regular tobacco cigarettes, was more likely for women with smoking during previous pregnancies (56.0% vs. 7.8%, P < .001), previous history of low birth weight infant delivery (16.1% vs. 8.6%, P = .013), premature delivery (16.7% vs. 7.0%, P < .001), and stillbirth (22.8% vs. 11.7%, P = .002). The presence versus absence of smoking during pregnancy was associated with a lower likelihood of being a housewife (70.5% vs. 80.5%, P = .010) and a higher likelihood of having an actively smoking mother (25.9% vs. 11.2%, P < .001) or partner (65.7% vs. 46.9%, P < .001). Regular tobacco cigarette users considered electronic cigarettes to have a higher risk of adverse impacts (11.1% vs. 2.9%, P = .012), while electronic cigarette users considered regular cigarettes to have a higher risk of nicotine exposure (55.9% vs. 13.0%, P < .001). Conclusion: Our findings indicate being employed, having an actively smoking mother or partner, as well as smoking in previous pregnancies, to be the risk factors for increased likelihood of smoking during pregnancy.
OBJECTIVE: The most appropriate ventilatory mode during fiberoptic bronchoscopy is still not yet known clearly for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome. Airway pressure release ventilation is used as a recovery treatment for patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome. In this study, the aim was to evaluate the safety of the fiberoptic bronchoscopy process in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome ventilated with airway pressure release ventilation mode and its effect on gas exchange and respiratory mechanics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Single-center retrospective observational study was performed in the intensive care unit of a tertiary referral center from September 2018 to November 2019. Patients with severe ARDS ventilated with APRV mode and undergoing FB were included. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy was performed by an expert intensivist-pulmonologist. All ventilator parameters set by the clinician were kept stable, and no change was made other than O 2 concentration. The mechanical ventilation parameters and arterial blood gas values before and after the procedure and fiberoptic bronchoscopy-related complications were recorded for the first 24 hours. RESULTS: A total of 14 acute respiratory distress syndrome patients who were ventilated with airway pressure release ventilation were enrolled. No significant deteriorations were detected in gas exchange, pulmonary compliance, and airway resistance values in our case series. It was observed that a small reduction in PaO 2 and an increase in PaCO 2 were present after the 1st hour; however, both were returned to baseline values in the 24th hour. Only 1 patient developed fiberoptic bronchoscopy-induced hypoxemia (7.1%). Complications, such as fiberoptic bronchoscopy-induced barotrauma, pneumothorax, hemodynamic deterioration, and bleeding, were not detected. CONCLUSION: According to our preliminary findings, performing fiberoptic bronchoscopy under airway pressure release ventilation mode by an experienced bronchoscopist does not bring additional complication risks in patients with severe acute respiratory distress syndrome.
OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to evaluate clinical, functional, and prognostic features and to determine the prognosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung diseases, and interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-nine cases with interstitial lung diseases were recruited in this study prospectively. Demographic features, symptoms, radiological findings, functional measurements, and immunological markers were recorded twice (at the time of initial admission and in the 12th month). Twenty-four of 69 cases were idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, 32 were connective tissue diseaseassociated interstitial lung diseases, and 13 were interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features. RESULTS: Most of the patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis were male, while there were more female patients in connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung diseases and interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features groups. Female patients (65.0%) predominated in connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung diseases group (P <.001). There was no significant difference in the mean ages of the disease groups, yet connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung diseases patients were generally younger (minmax: 34-82 years). In the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis group, only low titers of antinuclear antibody positivity were found. Antinuclear antibody positivity in the connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung diseases group and interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features group was high (P =.001). The long-term survival of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, connective tissue disease-associated interstitial lung diseases, and interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features patients were 37%, 40 months (median) (95% CI, 5.19374.807), 48.6%, 80 months (median) (95% CI, 57.032-102.968), 30.8%, 46 months (median) (95% CI, 26.624-65.376), respectively. CONCLUSION: Although a consensus report describing interstitial lung diseases with autoimmune features has been published, diagnostic criteria for this group are still vague. Since the interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features group had the worst results in terms of functional loss and survival rates, the follow-up parameters and follow-up algorithm should be established for this group. Clinical and immunological evaluation of the interstitial pneumonia with autoimmune features group should include detailed parameters because of follow-up and to estimate survival.
Pneumoconiosis is a lung disease that develops as a result of a tissue reaction that occurs with the accumulation of inorganic particles. Pathoclinical features may vary depending on the type of inhaled particle. Today, fibrotic and nonfibrotic tissue reactions are well defined in some substances. For example, it is known that exposures such as silica, asbestos, beryllium, and talc are associated with fibrosis in the lung, while exposures such as iron, tin, and barium sulfate cause non-fibrogenic changes. However, the pathoclinic and radiological findings of some rare exposures such as zirconium are not widely known. In a 52-year-old dental technician with a 26-year history of zirconium exposure, more prominent parenchymal emphysematous and fibrotic changes were detected in the upper zones of the thorax high-resolution computed tomography. Since zirconium exposure was clearly defined, radiological findings of this case may be useful to current literature.
Tobacco addiction, which causes the death of more than 8.5 million people in the world every year, is a preventable global public health problem. There are 1.1 billion adult smokers worldwide and 60% of them desire or intend to quit but unfortunately, the tobacco industry continues to profit at the expense of people's lives by marketing electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products as a smoking cessation method and they continue to poison young people with new threat tobacco products, promising a "smoke-free future" Turkish Thoracic Society is actively involved in the implementation of the National Tobacco Control Program to protect public health and has warned and raised awareness of new threats to the youth, such as electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products. The purpose of this report is to provide information about electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products and to present TTJ's position on the subject.
Pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma is a rare, low-grade pulmonary tumor observed as unilateral or bilateral multiple nodules at a rate of 4%-5%. Among the autoimmune connective tissue disorders, those most commonly associated with lung malignancies are sclero- derma and rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, we report a rare case of a 55-year-old middle-aged Asian woman with slow-growing bilat- eral multiple pulmonary sclerosing pneumocytoma and scleroderma-rheumatoid arthritis overlap syndrome. The autoimmune disorders and pulmonary fibrosis of this case might have led to the development of PSP.
OBJECTIVE:We aimed to analyze the association between body mass index and mortality in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 induced acute respiratory distress syndrome.MATERIAL AND METHODS:In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed 108 consecutive patients admitted in the intensive care unit for coronavirus disease 2019-induced lung disease in a single center between March 2020 and February 2021. Coronavirus disease 2019 infection was confirmed by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assay of nasal swabs or lower respiratory tract samples. Acute respiratory distress syndrome was defined using Berlin criteria. Acute respiratory distress syndrome severity was assessed with partial pressure of arterial oxygen/fraction of inspired oxygen ratio. We categorized patients according to the body mass index as underweight, <18.5 kg/m2; normal weight, from 18.5 kg/m2 to <25 kg/m2; overweight, from 25 kg/m2 to <30 kg/m2; obese, ≥30 kg/m2. Clinical characteristics and mortality were compared among groups. Demographic and clinical data were collected from electronic medical records of the hospital system.RESULTS:The mean age was 67.3 ± 13.3 years. Study participants were predominantly males (66.7%). The mean BMI was 28.2 ± 5.6 kg/m2. There were 2 patients (2%), 28 (26%), 42 (39%), and 36 patients (33%) in the underweight, normal-weight, overweight, and obese groups, respectively. The hospital mortality was 40.7%. There was no association between body mass index and mortality (P = .09). In multivariate analysis, mortality was associated with the presence of cancer [odds ratio = 7.338 (1.636-32.914), P = .009], and time between diagnosis and intubation [odds ratio = 1.318 (1.150-1.509), P ≤ .001].CONCLUSION:Neither acute respiratory distress syndrome severity nor mortality was higher in patients with higher body mass index compared to the ones with normal body mass index.
OBJECTIVE: Interstitial lung disease is the most frequent lung symptom of rheumatoid arthritis and is a significant contributor to morbidity. As a result, the target of this research was to measure the frequency of radiological and functional abnormalities in rheumatoid arthritis patients who did not have any respiratory symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study consists of 30 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. All involved cases were exposed to entire history taking and clinical examination. All patients were examined by high-resolution computed tomography and pulmonary function tests. Results: According to the computed tomography visual score, 73.3% showed interstitial lung disease. The most common abnormalities were reticular patterns (46.7%) followed by nodular patterns (40%) and septal lines (23.3%). However, 36% of the patients had a normal pulmonary function, while 32% had a small airway affection, 20% had restrictive lung disease, and 12% had obstructive lung disease. A significant association was found between supine expiratory volume and computed tomography visual score. Results showed no association between interstitial lung disease and all lung function test parameters. Conclusion: Subclinical interstitial lung disease is frequent among rheumatoid arthritis patents. A combination of pulmonary function tests with computed tomography is essential to enhance the recognition of subclinical interstitial lung disease as normal pulmonary function alone cannot exclude its presence.
OBJECTIVE:In this study, it was aimed to investigate the diagnostic value of thorax computed tomography, which is a non-invasive method, in diagnosing sarcoidosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS:In our Faculty of Medicine, Department of Chest Diseases between January 1, 2013, and July 1, 2019, the data of 816 patients who underwent endobronchial ultrasonography for mediastinal lymph node sampling and other sampling methods, such as mediastinoscopy, thoracotomy, etc., if the histopathological diagnosis could not be reached, were retrospectively screened and 192 patients (sarcoidosis: 62, non-sarcoidosis: 130 patients) who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Patients diagnosed with sarcoidosis and patients diagnosed with non-sarcoidosis were compared in terms of thorax computed tomography findings (medi- astinal lymph nodes and lung parenchymal involvement). RESULTS:Right upper paratracheal (72.6 vs. 46.9%, P = .001) and paraaortic lymph node involvement (79.0% vs. 60.8%, P = .01), hilar symmetry (88.5 vs. 58.3%, P < .001), and homogeneity in lymph nodes (80.6% vs. 56.9%, P = .001) were found to be significantly higher in the sarcoidosis group. Lymph node sizes were smaller in the sarcoidosis group and the mean density (51.3 Hounsfield unit vs. 44.1 Hounsfield unit, P = .002) was significantly higher. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the presence of homogeneity in the lymph nodes is 4.3-fold more likely to increase sarcoidosis, the presence of hilar symmetry 9.1-fold, the involvement of the right lower paratracheal lymph node 2.7-fold, the mean lymphadenopathy density >48 Hounsfield unit 4.3-fold, the maximum diameter of lymphadenopathy less than 27.5 mm 4.7-fold. CONCLUSION:This study revealed that the localization, size, density, and homogeneity of mediastinal lymph nodes will help clinicians to diagnose patients with sarcoidosis without using invasive methods.
OBJECTIVE: The criteria of hypopnea recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine until 2012 was 3% desaturation and 50% decline in the signal amplitude. The recommended and alternative criteria for hypopnea were determined as 3% desaturation accompanied by a 30% decline in the signal amplitude and 4% desaturation accompanied by a 30% decline in the amplitude by the 2013 update of the guideline was published by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine in 2012. The objective of our study was to investigate to what degree scoring of hypopneas has great importance in the diagnosis and severity grading of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome according to different criteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study was designed as a retrospective study in which the results of the polysomnography of 62 patients were recorded after evaluation according to 3 different hypopnea criteria. Criteria 1, criteria 2, and criteria 3 were accepted as a 3% drop in SaO2 accompanied by a 30% decline in the amplitude, as a 4% drop in SaO2 accompanied by a 30% decline in the amplitude, and as a 3% drop in SaO2 accompanied with a 50% decline in the amplitude, respectively. Results: Statistically significant differences were determined between criteria 1 and criteria 2, criteria 1 and criteria 3, and criteria 2 and criteria 3 regarding the numbers of hypopneas. Conclusion: For the same polysomnography, evaluations with different accepted hypopnea criteria cause different polysomnography results.
