Purpose:The aim of this study is to evaluate electrophysiological changes before and after pars plana vitrectomy for diabetic vitreous hemorrhage. Subject & Method:This study included 30 eyes of 30 patients with diabetic vitreous hemorrhage undergoing pars plana vitrectomy.All subjects underwent complete ophthalmological examination, Ultrasonography, Visual evoked potential, Electroretinography before and after vitrectomy (at 1 week & 3 months).Results: There was a statistically significant improvement in the Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA) and the Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) along the study period (p <0.001).There was statistically significant improvement in the mean latency and mean amplitude of Flash VEP There was a statistically significant increase in the mean amplitude of all ERG parameters at 3 months postoperative. Conclusion:Electrophysiological test is an important tool in detection improvement of retinal function after vitrectomy.
Objective: To evaluate the changes of visual fatigue symptoms, accommodative functions, ocular surface conditions, and high-order aberrations (HOA) after implantation of Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL), and explore their effects on asthenopia.Methods: Design: prospective observational case series.Patients with ametropia who underwent ICL surgeries and completed 3-month follow-up periods in our hospital were enrolled.Asthenopia degrees, amplitude of accommodation (AA), positive/negative relative accommodation (PRA/NRA), accommodative facility (AF), the ratio of accommodative convergence and accommodation (AC/A), Schirmer I test, noninvasive breakup time (NBUT), and HOA were examined and analyzed preoperatively and at 1 week,1 month and 3 months postoperatively.Results: Symptoms of asthenopia: the symptoms of asthenopia were significantly worse at 1 week after ICL surgeries than those before surgeries but increased gradually as time went by.The asthenopia scores 1 month after surgeries were still higher than those before ICL surgeries, eventually recovered at 3 months postoperatively.AA, AF, AC/A decreased 1 week postoperatively, returned to the baseline at 1 month and were higher at 3 months after surgeries.NBUT at 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgeries were significantly decreased and was the lowest at 1 week postoperatively.PRA, NRA, Schiermer values and HOA had no significant change.3. Correlation analysis showed that the worse AF and NBUT, the more severe the symptoms of asthenopia. Conclusion:The symptoms of asthenopia aggravate transiently after ICL implantation surgeries, but improved gradually with time.AF and NBUT were important factors affecting the changes of asthenopia.
Purpose: We investigated the site of tumor development, tumor tissue morphology, surgical approach, and method of selection and indications for a particular surgical method in patients who underwent intraorbital tumor excision. Methods: Surgical methods employed for orbital tumors at our facility between January 2010 and December 2021 were investigated. The relationship between the site of tumor development and surgical approaches, including osteotomy, was investigated. Results: The study included 92 patients, of whom 35 required osteotomy. Superficial orbital tumors were excised using a percutaneous or transconjunctival approach. Craniotomy was necessary to excise deep orbital tumors that developed above the optic nerve. Tumors that developed on the lateral side of the optic nerve were excised using lateral orbitotomy without craniotomy. Deep orbital tumors that developed on the medial and lower sides were excised by extending orbital osteotomy to adjacent sites as needed, for example, a combination of lateral orbitotomy and inferior rim osteotomy. single osteotomy or concomitant osteotomy at several sites, as needed.
Papilledema, when diagnosed, requires urgent management on the part of the treating specialist, as a number of life-threatening diseases are known to be associated with it. We report a rare case of papilledema diagnosed at our center. Multiple interventions helped us in clinching the diagnosis, as early magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and orbit of the patient turned out to be normal.
Background: Optic Perineuritis (OPN) is an uncommon condition associated with many systemic disorders.Methods: We report three geriatric patients with acute unilateral vision loss and OPN.We also included a brief literature review pertinent to OPN.Results/Discussion: While OPN has been reported in association with many conditions such as giant cell arteritis (GCA), it is infrequently associated with mucormycosis sinusitis.Here, we presented cases of OPN associated with both GCA and mucormycosis infection of the sinuses.Conclusions: OPN is an uncommon condition that may be idiopathic or secondary to a variety of disorders.Early recognition and urgent treatment of this condition and its underlying causes are necessary to prevent permanent vision loss.Even though many different conditions can lead to OPN, overall, the prognosis of OPN remains good save for mucormycosis associated with OPN where the prognosis is generally poor.

Amniotic band syndrome (ABS) is a rare syndrome having a constellation of congenital malformations.Choriostoma in ABS has rarely been reported.We report a rare case of ABS with choriostoma in which individual ocular parts in the left eye choriostoma have been highlighted by the authors.

Purpose:To analyze the variability of the parameters for diagnosis in two consecutive scans using Pentacam in patients with keratoconus.Methods: Seventy two eyes of 38 patients with keratoconus were recruited.Patients were divided into three groups based on mean TA (Group 1: <3D, group 2:≥3D and <6D and group 3: ≥6D).Two consecutive scans with two minutes intervals were performed by the same operator with Pentacam.Topographic astigmatism (TA) and mean keratometry (Km) readings from anterior and posterior surface, maximum keratometry (Kmax), central corneal thickness (CCT) and Belin/ Ambrósio enhanced ectasia display (B/A) from both scans were recorded.The differences of these parameters in two scans were analyzed.Results: There was no statistically significant difference between consecutive scans in any of the parameters.However, the difference in CCT and TA of posterior surface were statistically significant amongst the subgroups.Group three has the greatest difference in CCT (8.4 in group 3 vs.2.9 in group 1 and 1.1 in group 2, p=0.037) and TA of posterior surface (0.2 in group 3 vs.0.02 in group 1 and 0.04 in group 2, p=0.045). Conclusions:Pentacam is a reliable tool to detect keratoconus and assess the progression of the disease.On the other hand, in group 3 with high astigmatism, the difference in the parameters to detect the progression between consecutive scans was greater than group 1 and 2.
Introduction: The palpebral ptosis is defined as the fall of higher eyelid. According the millimeters of this type of fall it is classified in slight, moderate and severe. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of the Supramaximal technique in the repair of moderate and severe palpebral ptosis. Material and Methods: 95 patients were studied in a first cut, receiving treatment with the Supramaximal or Suspension to frontal. To determine the therapeutically effectiveness a simple-blind randomized clinical trial was made. The effectiveness was assessed as regards fall of high eyelid, height of palpebral fold, distance of border reflex and satisfaction of the patient. Results: The mean age was of 59, 35 years old. There was an average of female sex and of white race. The 51.6% of study patients have a severe ptosis. The therapeutically effectiveness of the Supramaximal was higher to Suspension to frontal (96.7% y 86.2%) respectively. Conclusions: The Supramaximal as a surgical technique is more efficacious than the Suspension one to frontal in the correction of moderate and severe higher palpebral ptosis.
Diabetic retinopathy is a complex trait since it depends on environmental and genetic factors for its development. Among them, the early therapy with insulin, the degree of metabolic control, time evolution of diabetes and different genetic polymorphisms. We conducted an exhaustive search of the literature, and in the Mexican population we only found five genes associated with diabetic retinopathy; APOE, CYP19A1, ALR2, HLA-DR7, and ADRB3. We concluded that, considering the molecular heterogeneity of the DM2 and DR in Mexican population, is required more studies with candidate genes. A new frontier for research in DR, are the variant of the ELMO1, CUBN and LRP2 genes
