Due to the unpredictable, varied, and often physical nature of law enforcement duties, police officers are at increased risk of work-related bodily injury and psychologically traumatic events.Myofascial release (MFR) technique and myofascial unwinding (MFU) potentially addresses the ill effects, both physical and mental, of the occupation.Fascia is a connective tissue that permeates the human body.Myofascia is described as the connective tissue network that extends three-dimensionally throughout the body, surrounding, supporting, suspending, protecting, connecting, and dividing its muscular, skeletal, and visceral components. Therefore, the purpose of the present case report is to explore the effect of MFR and MFU on the quality of life, pain, and recovery outcomes of a law enforcement officer with a previous traumatic injury. We reported a case of a 32-year-old male diagnosed with bilateral shoulder and low back pain. The subject was treated with MFR and MFU for 10 x 60-minute treatment sessions. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSIQ) evaluated sleep, the DASH (Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand) outcome measured physical function and symptoms of the shoulders, and the Short Form Survey (SF-36) indicated the quality of life. The subject filled out preintervention and postintervention outcome measures. The application of MFR and MFU resulted in improved scores on all outcome measures. The present case provides supporting evidence of the effectiveness of MFR and MFU as important treatment strategies in improving the quality of life of law enforcement officers.
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease that is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and is spread by respiratory droplets and small aerosols when a person coughs, breathes, or speaks.A subset of patients who recovered from the acute phase of COVID-19 reported persistent symptoms. These patients have been classified as suffering from PASC (Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection) or "long COVID," with the patients often being referred to as "long haulers."The purpose of the research was to determine the efficacy of a collaborative physical therapy and speech therapy intervention via telehealth on COVID-19 "long haulers."These individuals complained of overall fatigue, breathlessness with activities of daily living, and vocal fatigue. While there is research supporting the benefit of an interdisciplinary approach to therapy, little is known about the benefits of a combination of physical and speech therapy in addressing vocal fatigue related to COVID symptoms. We followed a non-randomized controlled AB single-subject research design, where patients' baseline measurements were compared to those after a 4-week treatment period of self manual stretching of the diaphragm, rib cage, and thoracic and cervical spine.Overall, positive outcomes were seen with the pulse oximeter readings and modified Borg scale readings after the four-week treatment course of exercises and self manual techniques. It is hoped that this study will inform practitioners of this interdisciplinary approach to mitigate some of the effects of COVID-19 on "long haulers".
Herb Induced Liver Injury (HILI) is a condition in which there is aggression to the liver tissue after exposure to substances present in many different medications, dietary supplements, herbs and xenobiotics.
We commend Krakowski I, et al. [1], for their recent article describing a recent prospective study that analyzes the treatment response, prognosis, and prognostic factors in metastatic melanoma patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) and MAPKinase inhibitors (MAPKis).
The aim of this study was to provide evidence of individualized prevention of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) through evaluating venous hemodynamics of lower limb in response to ankle pump movement in different positions.
Through the years, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico has failed in the collection of adequate and consistent data of hundreds of incidences and prevalence of intimate partner violence against the Puerto Rican women.
We need more brave scientists.Scientists and researchers are desperately needed who are not afraid to dip their feet -or even swim -in the lake
Many professions require continuing education (CE) to maintain professional licensure. The purpose of this opinion paper is recommending a shift from passive, lecture-based formats to learning requiring active engagement in CE sessions.Administrators and organizations offering CE should make a paradigm shift and begin requiring educational providers offering workshops and educational sessions begin using active engagement and psychomotor participation of its participants. For both traditional and complementary and alternative medicine practice, this would include mandating using psychomotor evaluation as part of evaluation for maintaining credentials for practice.Practitioners offering CE will need to become educators to make this transition from passive to active learning and psychomotor evaluation.Administrators and organizations will also need to change how they conduct hiring practices to assure CE providers can actively engage practitioners in their learning rather than passively sitting in a weekend lecture. These actions would require a seismic paradigm shift in the academy.
HIV and AIDS infection are major public health problems in sub-Saharan Africa. HIV is spread through contact with certain body fluids from a person with HIV, such body fluids include; blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids, and breast milk. HIV attacks and destroys the CD4 cells
Introduction: Pathogenesis of high blood pressure or hypertension is associated with microbial imbalance or dysbiosis of the gut microbiome.Previous research suggests probiotic consumption may reduce elevated blood pressure, possibly through manipulation of the gut microbiome, and may offer a future potential therapy for hypertension. Aim:The aim of this research was to critically evaluate current research evidence to assess whether probiotic supplements may reduce high blood pressure and formulate recommendations regarding their use as an intervention to support hypertensive clients in a Nutritional Therapy context. The objectives were to outline the possible association between gut dysbiosis and hypertension, and to explore possible mechanisms by which probiotics may influence blood pressure. Methods: A systematic review of the literature based upon PRISMA protocol was conducted.Four databases were searched: Cochrane Library (Central), CINAHL, Medline and TRIP from January 2014 until July 2020.Five eligible randomised controlled trials, including 453 participants, were identified and critically appraised to assess the quality of their evidence [1].Results: Of the three highest quality studies, two supported probiotic supplements to be effective in reducing blood pressure, one study reported no effect. The remaining two studies were appraised to be of lesser methodological quality so were given less weighting for quality of evidence. This research study found moderate evidence that probiotic supplementation can significantly reduce blood pressure in individuals with borderline hypertension. No effect was reported in normotensives. Conclusion:Probiotic supplementation may offer a convenient and effective adjunct for hypertensives to reduce high blood pressure alongside other dietary/lifestyle/medical interventions.Recommendation: Further large-scale trials of longer duration on hypertensives are recommended to establish functional pathways, bacterial strain, dosage and required timescale.
Leukemia is a group of malignant disorders characterized by abnormal leukocytes proliferation and development in the bone marrow and lymphatic system. It is the most prevalent hematologic cancer in adults above 55 years and the most common cancer in the pediatric population, accounting for nearly one-third of the cases. The five-year relative survival rates have enhanced over the years to 65.0% (2011-2017) through the application of therapeutic methodologies of standard chemotherapy. However, the prognosis of leukemia in geriatrics remains poor, with overall survival being only 5–10% in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Despite introducing new chemotherapeutic medications and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, the events of cancer relapse, multi-drug resistance, suboptimal response, and severe adverse effects remain significant events for some patients. Thus, it is critical to investigate alternative treatment options with improved efficacy, reduced toxicity, and multitarget combinations of chemotherapeutic medications, maybe with distinct mechanisms involved, to optimize the outcome of leukemia patients. This review discusses the recently studied herbal medicines exhibiting potential apoptosis and anti-cancer effect on the leukemia cell lines. After using PubMed’s Advanced Search features with keywords such as “Herbal Medicine,” “Acute myeloid leukemia,” “Acute lymphocytic leukemia,” “Chronic myeloid leukemia,” “Chronic lymphocytic leukemia,” we refined our search with the publication date range from 2017-2021 and entered articles into this review. Study selection was made based on Cochrane library guidelines to arrive at 13 final articles selection, comprising nine different herbs. The study details underlying mechanisms governing their anti-cancer effects, and corresponding biological effects.
In just the last 100 years, eyesight in developed countries has become significantly worse.
The color diagnosis is to observe the changes of the patient’s facial features and facial features can be a diagnostic method to understand the condition. The theory and technology of TCM color diagnosis are self-contained and have accumulated rich experience in about 2000 years. However, it is still in a visual description of visual inspection and expression in language. It is influenced by the amount of doctor’s experience and language expression ability. It has strong subjectivity and poor clarity.
Objective: Cervical cancer is caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) infection, and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is a precancerous lesion. Common treatments for CIN are conization and laser vaporization. HPV testing is useful for predicting residual or recurrent disease after surgical treatment. We performed high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) genotyping postoperatively to examine the HPV positivity rate and determine whether this rate differed depending on the surgical procedure.
Introduction: NT is an evidence-based complementary therapy, which applies nutrition and lifestyle science to underlying pathophysiology, resulting in personalized health improvement advice. Efficacy depends on establishing a quality relationship between therapist and client. The aim of the pilot study was to measure the effectiveness of NT at the UoW teaching clinic using the Working Alliance Inventory-Short Revised (WAI-SR) and a symptom-specific outcome measure, Measure Yourself Medical Outcome Profile 2 (MYMOP2).
The COVID-19 mortality statistics are quite chilling. 300,000 have died in the USA, in Brazil 190,000, 120,000 in Mexico and India 146,000, while France, UK and Italy are each approaching 70,000 [1]. And yet each of these deaths is the end of life of a real person who leaves a well of grief for the family and friends they have left behind, a point to which medicine now seems quite indifferent.
