The aim of the article is to assess the accessibility of communication space for parents with young children using baby strollers, based on the example of Poznań, and to identify the main barriers and solutions supporting the mobility of this user group. The scope of the study included an analysis of three types of urban structures differing in the period of their development: the historic part of the city, housing estates from the 1970s, and contemporary residential developments. The evaluation covered infrastructure elements crucial for the everyday functioning of caregivers of small children, including pedestrian routes, pedestrian crossings, public transport stops, accessibility of recreational areas, and methods of overcoming differences in terrain elevation. The analyses were complemented by a survey conducted among 139 users of urban communication space. The results indicate that the highest level of accessibility is characteristic of new housing estates, while the greatest limitations occur in the historic part of the city. The most frequently identified problems include the very limited presence of benches equipped with changing tables and the rare availability of solutions enabling easy avoidance of stairs. The conclusions show that, despite gradual improvements in the quality of urban space, none of the analysed areas provides fully comfortable conditions for moving with a baby stroller, indicating the need for further modernisation and design measures.
The study conducts a comparative parametric and illustrative analysis of three bridge abutment scour models: Froehlich, HIRE, and NCHRP 24-20, to assess their model responses and design implications under varied contraction intensities. Using a systematic parametric analysis framework, we examined the evolution of the relative scour ratio ysp/ya as a function of the contraction ratio L/ya, explicitly focusing on the influence of median sediment size D50 and approach flow Froude number Fr. The results indicate a significant divergence in model trajectories: legacy empirical models (Froehlich and HIRE) maintain a continuous power-law increase regardless of sediment properties, whereas the physically based NCHRP 24-20 model provides a physically interpretable response related to flow redistribution and sediment-mobility conditions. A critical finding is the identification of a bounded model response, with the relative scour ratio approaching approximately 3.36 under live-bed conditions. Furthermore, the sensitivity analysis indicates that for coarser sediments, the NCHRP 24-20 model predicts lower scour depths under the adopted clear-water condition (V < Vc), reflecting the influence of sediment mobility on the computed scour response. Additionally, a dynamic transition zone was identified at L/ya ≈ 35-45, within the investigated Froude-number range, where the NCHRP 24-20 model’s predictions may surpass the traditionally conservative Froehlich envelope, highlighting a potential under-design risk for deep floodplain encroachments. These findings provide a design-oriented, screening-level interpretation for determining foundation depths and designing scour countermeasures in complex compound channels, subject to site-specific hydraulic, sediment, geometric, and geotechnical verification.
Among the strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the use of recycled materials represents a key lever; this practice not only reduces the consumption of natural resources but can also significantly contribute to lowering CO2 emissions. By using recycled materials, we largely avoid the industrial processes associated with the extraction, processing, and production of new materials, which are among the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. At the national level in Italy, the new Ministerial Decree (DM) of August 5, 2024, aligns with the regulatory framework by incorporating European directives on environmental sustainability. One of the key innovations introduced is the establishment of guidelines requiring bituminous mixtures to contain a minimum percentage of reclaimed asphalt pavement (hereafter referred to as RAP), rather than a maximum percentage as was previously the case. In this article common Italian approach to the use of RAP will be described, starting from the selection of RAP, its differentiation and storage; how to use it in production for optimal results, and which rejuvenators to use to restore the maltenic fraction of the oxidized RAP binder. In conclusion, to ensure that the addition of RAP to the asphalt mix does not negatively affect the pavement’s lifespan, the most important quality control tests will be presented, along with a table of the main technical specifications. Finally, as an example of how the rejuvenator additives work, a case study will be presented in which a high-performance rejuvenator additive (ACF) was used, allowing an increase in RAP content compared to current standards, while maintaining high physical and mechanical properties.
Bitumen, as one of the oldest construction materials, has significant recycling potential, which makes it both environmentally friendly and in line with the principles of the circular economy. Although the recyclability of bituminous materials is widely recognised, the discussion continues on the possibility of increasing the efficiency of using Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in asphalt mixtures. The article presents the results of research on the application of a new type of experimental bituminous binder dedicated to recycling in asphalt concrete. The study included experimental tests of asphalt concrete for the binder course with variable RAP contents up to 30%, using a cold feeding process. Both laboratory test results and the findings from a trial road section are presented. For comparison, conventional road bitumen 35/50 was used as the reference binder, while an innovative recycling-dedicated binder 35/50 exp was applied as the experimental binder. The mixtures were subjected to classification testing as well as extended testing of long-term ageing resistance. The research confirmed that the experimental 35/50 exp bitumen, dedicated to recycling applications, enhances the compactability of mixtures containing 20-30% cold-feed RAP and improves the ageing resistance of asphalt mixtures. It was demonstrated that the action of experimental bitumen dedicated to recycling in mixtures containing RAP occurs in several stages: during production and laying, experimental bitumen supports compactability, while in the long term, it contributes to improved ageing resistance.
The article presents a review of current achievements and selected results of material research in the field of strengthening orthotropic steel decks in steel bridges using a thin Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) overlay to increase their load-bearing capacity and fatigue life. The review study confirmed a 40% to 80% reduction in stresses in the bridge deck structure. The authors’ experimental research focused on 70 mm thick UHPC overlays on two existing bridges with spans of 41 m and 292 m. It includes an assessment of the effect of the void content in the fresh concrete mix on the bulk density of hardened concrete, the increase in concrete strength over time, the effect of the number of freezing cycles on the Young's modulus of concrete and the strength of the UHPC-steel deck slab bond including the static slab deflections. The deflection of the bridge deck slab with the UHPC overlay in the three-point bending test was decreased by half, while the limit load values breaking the UHPC-steel bond zone using epoxy resin in the test plates were 150 kN and 162 kN. The presented results have important cognitive significance because they concern the tests of the UHPC overlay made on existing bridge structures.

The article presents the impact of a polymer modifier (P) on the properties of mineral-cement-emulsion (MCE) mixes. The theoretical part of the article discusses the ways of producing mixes using deep cold recycling. The “in-place – on site” and “in-plant – delivered” production methods are described. The paper also presents a description of a redispersible polymer powder (RPP) used as the polymer modifier. The part dedicated to the conducted research presents the experiment design and discusses the research methodology used to evaluate the effect of the polymer modifier on the properties of the MCE mix. The project involved the production of MCE mixes varying in terms of the type and amount of polymer powder, cement and bitumen emulsion. Mixes were designed with a variable share of cement range from 0.5% to 3.5%, a share of bitumen emulsion ranging from 0% to 5% and a fraction of redispersible polymer powder from 0.5% to 3.5%. A total of 15 mixes were made as part of the experiment, designed according to the Box-Behnken experiment design. The following physical and mechanical properties were assessed in the plan of the research: air void content Vm, water absorption nw, indirect tensile strength ITS, water damage resistance TSR, IT-CY stiffness modulus and SCB fracture toughness. The test results were analysed to assess the impact of the redispersible polymer powder on the properties of the recycled MCE mix. Following the analyses, the composition of mix was optimised regarding the requirements set out in the Polish design guidelines.
The article presents an analysis of the influence of upper surface execution technology of concrete pavements on selected performance characteristics, namely: texture, longitudinal evenness, and noise level (measured using the OBSI method). Based on the authors’ own investigations conducted on selected motorway and expressway sections in Poland, various texturing techniques were analyzed, in particular the exposed aggregate technology and the Grinding and Grooving (G&G) method. It was found that the applied final surface technology, remedial treatments (metal shot blasting), and the machinery used significantly affect the values of selected parameters: MPD – Mean Profile Depth, IRI – International Roughness Index, and noise level measured by the OBSI method – On-Board Sound Intensity. Special attention was drawn to the fact that the application of metal shot blasting on pavements constructed using the exposed aggregate technology may deteriorate certain performance characteristics, such as noise levels, compared to the original values. Furthermore, it was observed that the service period has a measurable influence on the evolution of selected parameters over time.
The paper presents the results of research on the simultaneous use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), highly polymer modified binder and selected warm mix asphalt (WMA) additive in asphalt concrete for wearing course. The scope of the research included evaluation of the characteristics of compactability, resistance to permanent deformation, resistance to water and frost damage, as well as assessing the influence of short- and long-term ageing. Three types of mixtures were tested: 1) reference mixture without RAP, 2) mixture with RAP with binder replacement (BR) ratio of the level of 26% and 3) mixture with RAP with the same BR ratio and WMA additive. Mixtures 1) and 2) were prepared and compacted at 160°C and 145°C while mixing and compaction temperatures for mixture 3) were 145°C and 115°C, respectively. The obtained results indicate that there are no reasons not to use simultaneously highly polymer modified bitumen with WMA additive in a mixture containing RAP, which in fact improved compactability characteristics. However, the issue of resistance to environmental factors (water and frost) requires further research as mixture with RAP and WMA additive did not meet required level of resistance to water and frost damage.
The dominant technology currently used for constructing wearing courses is the SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) mixture technology, which has a high recycling potential. The main factors limiting the amount of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) that can be used in SMA mixtures are the origin of the RAP, its gradation, and the properties of the binder it contains. Owing to the unique structure of the mineral skeleton in SMA mixtures, combined with the requirements for the aggregates and binders used, only RAP derived from SMA layers can be incorporated into their composition. Moreover, the significant influence of vehicle traffic and climatic conditions on SMA layers necessitates the use of RAP containing asphalt binders of relatively high quality. The article assessed both existing SMA wearing courses and RAP obtained from SMA layers in terms of their potential reuse in SMA mixtures during hot recycling processes. The analyses were based on data provided by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways as well as by construction companies. The composition and gradation of original SMA mixtures, as well as the gradation of selected RAP obtained from them, were analyzed. Based on these analyses, an attempt was made to identify correlations and indicators describing gradation changes resulting from pavement milling. Using the obtained RAP gradation data and gradation data derived from the identified correlations, a theoretical process of designing SMA mixtures with different BR (Binder Replacement) index was carried out in order to determine the maximum feasible levels of unprocessed RAP incorporation. The conducted analyses showed that by predicting the gradation of the mineral mixture in RAP, it is possible-based on data from the original SMA asphalt mixture or from core samples-to estimate the achievable level of RAP incorporation that can be obtained from a given layer.
The paper analyses the impact of recycled geogrid fibres on the mechanical and physical properties of asphalt concrete. Survey results indicate that the knowledge in this area is very limited. The presence of geogrid fibres from milling is an increasingly common challenge for the design of new pavements from asphalt mixtures containing recycled asphalt pavement. The adopted research procedure provided for the selection and optimisation of the content of recycled glass and carbon geogrids added to the asphalt mixture. Two reference asphalt concrete mixtures for the binder course were designed: AC 16W 35/50 KR3-4 and AC 22W 35/50 KR3-4. The research process was controlled using a factorial experiment design, including two qualitative variables: geogrid type and grain size distribution in the asphalt mixture, and two qualitative variables: share and length of geogrid fibres. The mixtures designed and prepared under laboratory conditions were subject to the test of crack propagation resistance using the SCB method. The research also included an assessment of associated properties: air void content Va, water resistance ITSR and rutting resistance PRDair, WTSair. The results of the analysis indicated a potential way to improve the fracture toughness of asphalt concrete for the binder courser by optimising geogrid parameters. Also, the potential use of recycled geogrid to make asphalt mixtures enables the implementation of sustainable development principles in the road construction sector.
The article investigates the chemical and rheological properties of bituminous binders extended with tall oil pitch (TOP), a bio-oil by-product from the pulp and paper industry. Bio-extended binders were formulated to incorporate different percentages of TOP, reaching the target penetration grades. Comprehensive chemical analyses, including Fourier-transform infrared FTIR spectroscopy and SARA (saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes)analysis by thin-layer chromatography with flame ionisation detection (TLC-FID), were conducted to investigate the compositional changes induced by TOP addition. Laboratory ageing of the binders was carried out. Rheological characterisation was performed using dynamic shear rheometer(DSR)to assess the impact on viscoelastic behaviour. The results indicate that TOP-extended bituminous binders exhibit distinct chemical signatures from bitumen, with notable differences in functional groups and SARA fractions. Furthermore, the incorporation of TOP changes the viscoelastic behaviour of binder. The specific impact and its extent seem to depend on the temperature and frequency range as well as the content of TOP in the binder. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of more sustainable asphalt pavements, highlighting the potential of TOP as a viable extender for bituminous binders.
W artykule przedstawiono rozszerzoną analizę związku pomiędzy kluczowymi parametrami barier drogowych a wskaźnikami obciążenia pasażerów: Acceleration Severity Index ASI oraz Theoretical Head Impact Velocity THiV.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki analizy skali i struktury zdarzeń drogowych z udziałem pojazdów transportu towarowego w Polsce w 2022 roku. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na wyraźne różnice regionalne: największą liczbę zdarzeń odnotowano w Polsce centralnej i południowej, zwłaszcza w województwach o dużym natężeniu ruchu i gęstej sieci drogowej.
The article presents an extended analysis of the relationship between key road barrier parameters and occupant load indices: Acceleration Severity Index ASI and Theoretical Head Impact Velocity THiV. Three characteristics of high engineering importance were assessed: post spacing, barrier height, and normalized working width. In addition to classical Pearson and Spearman correlations and partial correlations (controlling for TBxx test class and vehicle type), the study presents marginal effects curves with 95% confidence intervals derived from multivariate linear models. The results confirm that greater system compliance (larger spacing and greater working width) is associated with reduced ASI and THiV, while increasing barrier height in the analyzed dataset corresponds to higher ASI/THiV values. The article also discusses design implications and directions for further research.
Recycled construction aggregates represent a wide range of aggregates used in road engineering and are characterised by relatively high variability in the properties tested even within the same type of raw material used for its production. The properties laid down in specific regulations concerning applications do not reflect the specific characteristics of recycled aggregates. Being aggregates that are inherently multi-component or formed by mixing different raw materials and crushable, they require expanded testing and evaluation methods for their classification for road engineering applications. The important strength-and durability-related properties of these aggregates are grading stability, stability of load-bearing capacity, and reinforcement ratio. The basic element of this paper will be the results of aggregate tests and their analysis in terms of the evaluation of properties resulting from the specificity of aggregates as well as the classification of requirements and performance characteristics used in Polish technical documents. The maximum change in grading makes it possible to pre-classify recycled construction aggregates for specific layers in road pavement construction. On the other hand, the stability of load-bearing capacity expressed through the guaranteed bearing capacity index or reinforcement ratio makes it possible to correctly identify changes in load-bearing capacity in an aggregate in terms of minerals, composition, or chemistry.
In road construction in Poland, mastic asphalt is not a leading mixture. Traditional mixtures, mainly asphalt concrete (AC) and stone mastic asphalt (SMA) dominate. Nevertheless, mastic asphalt (MA) remains an attractive material due to its specific properties, such as low air void content and the possibility of laying without compaction. This paper reviews selected studies on additives used to improve mastic asphalt performance, focusing on Trinidad Epur & eacute; natural asphalt (TE), zeolites, and crumb rubber from waste tires. Experimental research analyzed the effect of TE addition (10% and 20% by binder mass) on the properties of MA 11 mastic asphalt in comparison with a reference mixture. The results showed that TE improved rutting resistance, particularly in mixtures with higher binder content. Tests also covered the use of natural (clinoptilolite) and synthetic(NaP1)zeolites. A 5% addition allowed production temperature to be reduced from 215 degrees C to 180 degrees C, with varied effects on rutting resistance. Furthermore, laboratory tests investigated the influence of crumb rubber on MA 8 mixtures with 35/50 bitumen, applied by wet and dry processes. Rubber addition enhanced stiffness and deformation resistance, especially when incorporated into the binder. The findings confirm that these additives can improve mechanical and technological properties of mastic asphalt and support its broader use in specialized applications.
