
A new species of the fish-parasitic isopod family Cymothoidae is described from the eastern Seto Inland Sea, western Japan. Nerocila domotoae sp. nov. is found from the caudal fins of silver croaker Pennahia argentata (Houttuyn, 1782) and Japanese whiting Sillago japonica Temminck and Schlegel, 1843. This new species is distinguished from all other species of Nerocila Leach, 1818 with serrate uropodal endopods by having the following traits: cephalon 0.8 times as long as wide, anterior margin rounded; antennule bases separated; antenna article 4 without dense cluster of setae on posterodistal margin; mandible palp article 3 with 1 long and 2–4 short terminal setae; maxilla with 2 recurved robust setae on medial lobe and 2 or 3 on lateral lobe; maxilliped palp article 3 with 3 recurved robust setae at tip and 1–3 on medial margin; pereopod 6 merus inferior margin with single robust seta in each of lateral and medial rows (i.e., 1 + 1), carpus inferior margin with 3 + 1 or 3 + 2 robust setae; pereopod 7 ischium inferior margin with single row of 1 or 2 robust setae, merus inferior margin with 2–4 + 3–5 (5–9 in total) robust setae, carpus inferior margin with 3–5 + 1–3 (5–7) robust setae; three light brown stripes on dorsal surface; pleotelson lateral margins convex, posterior margin converging to weak caudomedial point; uropodal endopod medial margin with notch, lateral margin with moderate to deep serration.
A new species of Flabelligeridae is described from Japanese deep-sea waters. Ilyphagus salazarvallejoi sp. nov. has needle-shaped neurochaetae tips and palps with lobes. A mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I barcode sequence was obtained from the holotype and deposited in GenBank. This finding represents the first record of Ilyphagus Chamberlin, 1919 from Japan and the western Pacific, and an identification key to Ilyphagus species is provided.
A single specimen of Parupeneus moffitti Randall and Myers, 1993, known formerly only from three type specimens collected from the Mariana Islands, was collected off Kitadaito Island, Daito Islands, southern Japan in August 2025. The former specimen therefore represents the second record of the species, and first from Japanese waters. A full description of the specimen and limited genetic analysis is provided, indicating a possible sister relationship of P. moffitti to Parupeneus chrysonemus (Jordan and Evermann, 1903). The pairwise distance (5.1%) between the two taxa justified their interspecific differentiation. The new standard Japanese name “Kotou-himeji” is proposed for the species.
A moray eel [192.8 mm total length (TL)], collected in February 2025 from a mud and scattered rock slope at 1 m depth in the Yoshikawa Fishing Port, Konan City, central Kochi Prefecture, Japan, was identified as Gymnothorax taiwanensis Chen, Loh, and Shao, 2008, previously known only from Taiwan. The species differs from all congeners in having the following combination of characters: tail length 45.8%–48.7% of TL; total vertebrae 117–121; jaw teeth stout; vomerine teeth biserial; and iris orange. The present specimen extends the known distribution range of G. taiwanensis northward to Japan and represents the smallest recorded size of the species to date. Comparison with five additional specimens collected from Taiwan in January 2019 and July 2022, including a 707 mm TL individual that extends the known maximum size of the species, revealed coloration variations across body lengths. In addition, the study proposes including the flounced flap of the posterior nostril rim as a diagnostic character of G. taiwanensis, as it readily distinguishes this species from its congeners. The new standard Japanese name “Tankan-utsubo” is proposed for the species.
Zodariellum planum (Zhang and Zhang, 2019) (Araneae: Zodariidae), originally described from Shaanxi, central China, is newly recorded from western Honshu, Japan, on the basis of specimens collected in a vineyard. Conspecificity between males and a previously unknown female is supported by identical partial mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences. The present paper provides photographs and illustrations of both sexes, detailed description and diagnosis of the female, DNA barcode data and a distribution map. In Japan, this species is currently known only from a single vineyard population, and its occurrence there may suggest a possible introduction, although this requires further investigation.
A freshwater mussel-associated leech, Hemiclepsis kasmiana Oka, 1910, is redescribed based on newly collected specimens from Japan, including its type localities. For the first time, the redescription provides morphological information on the internal digestive and reproductive systems of Japanese populations of H. kasmiana. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and nuclear 18S rRNA markers also reveal that H. kasmiana is most closely related to H. khankiana Bolotov, Klass, Bespalaya, Konopleva, Kondakov, and Vikhrev, 2019, and is not recovered as a monophyletic lineage with “H. kasmiana” from Korea and the Russian Far East, highlighting the necessity of re-evaluating the taxonomic status of continental populations of this species. In addition, DNA barcoding analysis of the crop contents of the present leech specimen indicates that freshwater fishes serve as primary hosts for H. kasmiana, consistent with observations of other mussel-associated congeners.
A single specimen of the rare batfish Solocisquama erythrina (Gilbert, 1905) was collected from a steep rocky seafloor off Minamidaito Island, southern Japan. The species is characterized by a bulging triangular disk and cylindrical tail, entirely covered by tubercular scales, each with a single multicuspid spine. The species had been considered as a Hawaiian endemic. However, the specimen from the Daito Islands represents the first record of S. erythrina from the northwestern Pacific region, including Japanese waters, and is further evidence of a commonality of the deep-sea fish fauna between oceanic islands in the central and western Pacific regions.
Three new species of the genus Spectrarcturus Schultz, 1981 (Arcturidae) are described from Kumano-Basin, Japan: S. regularis sp. nov., S. bispinosus sp. nov., and S. crassibrevis sp. nov. Spectrarcturus regularis sp. nov. resembles S. murdochi (Benedict, 1898) from North Pacific and Arctic waters around Greenland, S. hystrix (Sars, 1877) from northernmost North Atlantic Ocean, and S. intermedius (Richardson, 1899) from northernmost North Pacific, in the following features: head with 2 supraocular spines; pereonites 1–3 and 5–7 each with 2 submedial spines; pleon with 6 lateral spines. However, S. regularis sp. nov. is distinguished from these three species by the following combination of characters: body covered with long spines; head with 2 supraocular spines and 2 posterior supraocular spines; pereonite 1 with 2 submedial and 4 lateral spines; pereonites 2 to 7 with 2 submedial spines. Spectrarcturus bispinosus sp. nov. is separated from its congeners by the following combination of characters: body with numerous small tubercles; pereonite 3 with 2 blunt submedial spines. Spectrarcturus crassibrevis sp. nov. differs from its congeners by the following combination of characters: pereonites 1–7 each with 2–4 short blunt submedial spines; pleotelson with 4 short blunt submedial and 2 lateral spines. This study provides the first species of the genus to be described and found in Japan, and southernmost distributional record of the genus. An amended diagnosis of the genus and key to the species are provided.
A new species of eriopisid amphipod, Victoriopisa satsumaensis, is described from Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of eyes, the absence of a distodorsal tuft of long setae on peduncular article 2 of antenna 1, and the shape of the palmar margin and the dactylus of gnathopod 2. The new species is most similar to V. nhatrangensis Marin and Palatov, 2022, which was recently described from Vietnam, but differs in having (1) more numerous short setae along the palmar margin of gnathopod 1, (2) 2 projections on the palmar margin of gnathopod 2, (3) a shallower median excavation on the posterior margin of gnathopod 2 dactylus, (4) several robust setae on the anterior margin of pereopods 5 and 6 carpi, and (5) more numerous distal setae on article 2 of uropod 3 outer ramus. Additionally, partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I and histone H3 were determined from the type specimens of V. satsumaensis for DNA barcoding and future taxonomic studies.
Yamakado Marsh is a small, protected marsh in the mountains of northern Shiga Prefecture, with a history stretching back to the last glacial period. Although the plants, diatoms, plankton, and insects of the marsh have been studied, there are no previous reports of ostracods. For this study, nine localities in the marsh, one spring slightly above the marsh, and a pond 400 m downstream were sampled for ostracods in August 2025, yielding ten species. Two species are described as new to science, belonging to the genera Fabaeformiscandona Krstić, 1972 and Cyclocypris Brady and Norman, 1889. The new Fabaeformiscandona species, the 13th species of the genus in Shiga Prefecture, is morphologically most similar to F. okuboi Smith and Janz, 2008, a probable endemic species of Lake Biwa, located just to the south of Yamakado Marsh. The new Cyclocypris is the third species of the genus reported from Japan, with the other two known from Hokkaido, but it is most similar to the Chinese species C. pangi Yu, Ma, Wang, and Zhai, 2022.
I describe two new species of the nemertean family Valenciniidae from Japanese waters: Baseodiscus jimii sp. nov. from subtidal habitats and Cephalomastax fujiwarai sp. nov. from a piece of deep-sea sunken wood. The new species in Baseodiscus Diesing, 1850 is clearly distinguishable from its congeners by unique external coloration patterns and head morphology, whereas C. fujiwarai sp. nov. is readily separated from the only previously known congener, C. brevis Iwata, 1957, by its uniform body coloration. In addition, a new record of B. aff. marmoratus (Bürger, 1890) from Japanese waters is provided in this study. Phylogenetic analyses based on a concatenated dataset of partial sequences of two mitochondrial and three nuclear genes recovered their phylogenetic positions among Valenciniidae.
A species of octopus from the Red Sea is described based on two recently collected fisheries survey specimens and four historical specimens housed in the Natural History Museum, Vienna. The latter were collected between 1895 and 1927, including specimens from two of the Austrian Pola Expeditions of the late nineteenth century. This species is here identified as Pinnoctopus cuvierii (d’Orbigny, 1826) which is redescribed based on morphological characters and comparison with the monotypic holotype of P. cuvierii, that of congeneric species P. lechenaultii (d’Orbigny, 1826) and, from the Mediterranean Sea, a voucher specimen of P. macropus (Risso, 1826). The distributions of P. cuvierii (an Indian Ocean species) and P. macropus are separated by the barrier between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, with no evidence of any distribution overlap after the opening of the Suez Canal. The first molecular reference sequences are provided for P. cuvierii including one nuclear and four mitochondrial genes. Phylogenetic analysis and comparison with other species in the same genus reveal that P. cuvierii is most closely related to the Indo-West Pacific species P. luteus (Sasaki, 1929) and relatively distantly related to P. macropus, which has closer affinities to the Atlantic species P. furvus (Gould, 1852).
Adults of both sexes of Argulus coregoni Thorell, 1864 were collected from the body surface of bester [a hybrid of beluga Huso huso (Linnaeus, 1758) × sterlet sturgeon H. ruthenus (Linnaeus, 1758)], common carp Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758, and rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792) at a governmental fish hatchery in Hyogo Prefecture, central Japan. There was a marked difference in the number of A. coregoni per infected fish between these host species: rainbow trout were more heavily infected (151–224 individuals) than bester and common carp (25 and seven individuals, respectively). The parasite is described and characterized by possessing four to six plumose setae near the posterior margin of the coxa of the first leg, 59–66 supporting rods in the marginal membrane of the first maxilla, and two protrusions adorned with small spines and a digitiform projection on the ventro- and dorsoposterior margins, respectively, of the coxa of the male second leg. The collection of A. coregoni from bester represents a new host and the second record from sturgeons (the family Acipenseridae) worldwide. Common carp is reported as a host of this parasite for the first time in Japan.
Three specimens of a rare snailfish, Menziesichthys alaid Prokofiev and Iftime, 2020 (Teleostei: Perciformes: Liparidae), collected from Rausu, Hokkaido, Japan, the southern Sea of Okhotsk and Bering Sea Slope, represent the second and third records of the species, previously known only from two type specimens caught off the northern Kuril Islands. A detailed description (including selected osteological characters) based on the former three specimens, showed the species to differ from other snailfishes as follows: vertebrae 61–68; dorsal-fin rays 61; anal-fin rays 55–57; caudal-fin rays 3 or 4; no pelvic disk; a shallowly notched pectoral fin with 11–14 rays, lower lobe longer than upper lobe; teeth simple; cephalic pores 2-6-7-1, chin pores paired in separate pits, coronal pore present; lower tip of retroarticular pointed; gill slit large, extending to lower base of pectoral fin; stomach and peritoneum black. Because the species displays many diagnostic characters of Paraliparis Collett, 1879 rather than Menziesichthys Nalbant and Mayer, 1971, it is here regarded as a member of Paraliparis.
Hazeus atrispinalis sp. nov. (Gobiidae; Clear Sand-goby; new standard Japanese name: Okojo-haze) is described based on 40 specimens (16.7–31.8 mm standard length) collected from the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan, and confirmed based on underwater photographs from the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, and Republic of the Marshall Islands. The new species, which is the 10th valid species in the genus Hazeus Jordan and Snyder, 1901, is diagnosed from congeners by the following combination of characters: cheek and opercle naked; dorsal and anal-fin rays VI-I, 9 or 10; second or third spine of first dorsal fin longest, each without a filamentous tip; pectoral-fin rays 15–17; longitudinal scale rows 26 or 27; predorsal scales 6–9; snout relatively short, length 4.7%–6.4% of SL; second dorsal-fin spine short, length 7.8%–11.0% of SL; sensory papillae row a almost double, row ot uniserial, row n transverse; black markings internally along vertebral column in life; first dorsal fin with a black blotch near base in males; body without distinct dotted lines, except for mid-lateral row of five large black blotches; pelvic frenum translucent; maximum size ca. 32 mm SL. The new species most resembles H. ammophilus Allen and Erdmann, 2021, but prefers sand to sandy-mud bottoms, whereas H. ammophilus is commonly found on soft mud bottoms.
Three new species of the iphimediid amphipod, Iphimedia declivis, I. macrops, and I. trigona, are described from the Pacific coast of Japan. These species can be distinguished from one another by the shapes of pereonites 1, 7, coxa 7, and pereopod 7 basis. A key to the species of the family Iphimediidae in Japan is provided.
A single specimen (45.9 mm standard length) of the deep-sea scorpionfish Phenacoscorpius megalops Fowler, 1938 (Teleostei: Scorpaenidae) was collected by ROV (remotely operated vehicle) from within an unidentified colonial sun coral [Dendrophylliidae gen. sp. (Scleractinia)] on a steep sea floor off Minamidaito Island, southern Japan. Phenacoscorpius megalops, characterized by the absence of palatine teeth, an incomplete lateral line, and a dark blotch on the dorsal fin, has been previously recorded from the western and central Pacific, including Vietnam, the South China Sea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vanuatu, the Emperor Seamounts, and the Hawaiian Islands. This is the first record from Japanese waters.
Hofstenia Bock, 1923, the type genus of Hofsteniidae, was originally established for H. atroviridis Bock, 1923, from Misaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. This study describes Hofstenia sugashimaensis sp. nov., discovered in water tanks at the Sugashima Marine Biological Laboratory (Nagoya University) and Toba Aquarium, both situated at the mouth of Ise Bay in Mie Prefecture, along the Pacific coast of central Japan. Morphologically, it resembles H. miamia Corrêa, 1960 (commonly known as the “three-banded panther worm”) but is distinguished by two transverse bands and dorsal midline markings based on intra- and interspecific comparisons. Phylogenetic analysis of partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, 18S rRNA, and 28S rRNA supports its genetic distinction from H. miamia.
Troglodontobdella nom. nov. is herein proposed as a replacement name for the salifid leech genus Troglobdella Liu and Nakano in Liu, Li, Wu, Lin, Li, Nakano, and Liu, 2025, because the latter genus-group name is preoccupied by the acariform genus Troglobdella Oudemans, 1937.
