Pohřební aktivity ze starší doby bronzové (přibližně 2200–1700/1650 př. Kr.) byly v Plotištích nad Labem (okr.
Domácí (němčickou) provenienci lze předpokládat také u některých tyčinkovitých článků spojova¬ných bronzovými kroužky, menší část souboru pak vykazuje cizí původ, a to především v oblasti Karpatské kotliny. Získané artefakty jsou datovány do průběhu stupně LT C, což odpovídá době největšího rozmachu lokality.
Burial activities from the Early Bronze Age (c. 2200-1700/1650 BC) were found at three sites in Plotistenad Labem (Hradec Kr & aacute; love district. The Plotistenad Labem A site was investigated in the 1960s and a total of 50 graves and three settlement features witle hemen cleeletons were disececred Two cleeletons in settlement features were fonnel de the Pletisecmoel babere B-site graves were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century at the Plotistenad Labem C site. With the exception of the finds from site C. which were published by L. Domecka in 1911, the graves and settlement features from Plotistenad Labem have never been published in a comprehensive manner. The article presents all the facts that have been compiled concerning Early Bronze Age burial activities in Plotiste nad Labem after more than half a century of research, processing the finds not only from an archaeolo-gical perspective but also with the help of modern scientific methods. An anthropological analysis was performed on the preserved skeletons, and the pathology and diet of the deceased were also analysed in detail. The significance of the burial site in Plotiste nad Labem in the region is underscored by the mapping of other burial activities from the Early Bronze Age throughout the entire Hradec Kralove region.
In 2019, during archaeological rescue excavations preceding the construction of the Slati & ncaron;any bypass, two inhumation graves dating back to the 5th century AD (stages D2 and D3 of the Migration Period) were discovered. The aim of the paper is to present the results of comprehensive interdisciplinary cooperation (anthropology, archaeozoology, metallography, genetics, textile studies, and chemical, elemental, and isotope analyses). The study focuses on the status of the deceased, contacts during the Migration Period and their importance within the Vina & rcaron;ice group and Central Europe. The graves belong to the Vina & rcaron;ice group, including its late phase, and their equipment testifies to supra-regional contacts in the second half of the 5th century. They may represent part of a larger burial site.
Surfage surveys conducted at the central agglomeration of Nem & ccaron;ice (Prost & ecaron;jov district: cadastral territory of N & ecaron;m & ccaron;ice nad Hatou, Vicem rice, and Poli & ccaron;ky) produced an unusually large assemblage of La T & egrave;ne artefacts including several hundred components of metal. predominantly bronze belt chains. The assemblage also included evidence of their production in the form of semi-finished and failed pieces. The production of belts composed of links with a circular central part and side plates and links with a central rib and side plates was clearly documented at the site. A domestic (N & ecaron;m & ccaron;ice) provenance can also be assumed for certain bar-shaped links connected by bronze rings, while a smaller part of the assemblage is of foreign origin, mainly from the Carpathian Basin region. The acquired artefacts are dated to the course of phase LT C. which corresponds to the heyday of the Nem & ccaron;ice site.
This work is a comprehensive study of archaeological finds from Bohemia, Moravia, southwest Slovakia, and Louser Austria with enamel decoration from the 2 to 1 century BC. Numerous artefacts decorated with enamel, almost exclusively red, come from the La T & egrave;ne cultural sphere. Enamel is found especially on belts, horse harnesses and riding equipment, chariots, and decorative rivets. Regional and superregional groups of these artefacts were identified in the studied territory. According to the results of chem ical analyses, the composition of the glass of the La T & egrave;ne red enamels from Europe of the 2 to 1 century BC corresponds to the same two basic groups of natron glass - Egyptian and Levantine - as identified in the glass of personal ornaments of this period. Le. beads, pendants, and bracelets. To date, the only evidence of local enamel processing is pieces of red glass, semi-finished products, and waste in the workshops at the Mont Beuvray Bibracte oppidum in France. The metal composition of local types of enamelled artefacts could suggest other workshops.
Water management in the Early Neolithic period was a significant aspect of daily life indicating the complex relationship between communities and their environment. The wells were not only central to the provision of water but also played roles that could evolve and change during their lifetime. This article focuses on the Early Neolithic wooden well and its infill at the Velim site in central Bo¬hemia (Czech Republic), whose construction has been dated to the period following the winter of 5196/5195 BC. The wooden lining consisted of four posts and a hollow lime tree trunk. Originally, the well was used for pumping drinking water, but it then served as a retting pit for processing flax and possibly European feather grass. Finally, the well was backfilled and abandoned. It is unusual for a secondary function as a retting pit to have been identified for a Linearbandkeramik well. We also reconstructed the common plant-based diet of the first farmers. Environmental data collected from the well infill suggest that a wide range of mostly open habitats and forestless vegetation types were present in the vicinity.
The study presents the results of multidisciplinary analyses of finds from five large Bylany culture graves uncovered during an excavation along the route of the Kol & iacute;n bypass road. In addition to pottery and metal grave goods, attention was devoted to anthropological and archaeozoological finds and residues of organic materials on metal artefacts. The structural qualities of the grave pits themselves, the composition of their inventory, and spatial relationships were also studied. The conclusions complement knowledge of burials in the eastcentral Bohemian territory of the Bylany culture and, with respect to the results of the excavation of several settlement components in the surrounding area, substantially expand information on central agglomeration at the crossroad of important travel routes. The agglomeration included a farmstead, several settlements, and at least four cemeteries, three with evidence of burials of elite individuals.
Roman Period and Migration Period long-houses, which have been uncovered in the northern regions of Germania magna in almost incalculable numbers, appear to be almost completely absent in Bohemia, Moravia, and Slovakia. Every settlement south of the Erzgebirge, Sudetes, and Carpathians that has been investigated on a larger or smaller scale and published with a plan delivered pit houses, while above-ground post structures are absent or can either be regarded as small buildings or are usually not acceptable in the proposed form of interpretation. The starting point of this article, including a critical review of the literature, is the conviction that there was no such separation in the area of the economy and way of life manifested in buildings, and that such a picture is merely dictated by regional research premises and traditions. There is evidence of long-houses in Roman Period and Migration Period settlements in the area north of the middle Danube, where the three-aisled construction was obviously dominant.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the results from the very first excavation at the central agglomeration of N & ecaron;m & ccaron;ice, one of the most important centres in Central Europe in the 3rd and 2nd century BC. The excavation conducted in 2021 focussed on the space with the oldest documented secondary glass workshop in transalpine Europe. The excavation was preceded by the use of non-destructive methods, above all regular surface surveys and geophysical measurements, which led to the localisation of the assumed glass workshop. Unusual archaeological situations investigated during the excavation provided a great number of finds of a wide range of material dated primarily to the Middle and Late La T & egrave;ne period. In addition to glass, the processing of artefacts from amber and iron was also documented, which points to the presence of an area where a number of types of specialised production were operated. An important part of the analysis of the acquired material was the application of additional supplemental scientific methods and analyses with the potential to clarify how the area was used.
Today, Pamatky archeologicke is an internationally respectedjournal presenting the archaeology of the Czech lands. It was founded in 1854 as the successor to the unsuccessful Archeologicke listy under the patronage of (today's) National Museum; during the first century of its existence, the subject of this study, Pamatky archeologicke, underwent numerous changes, e.g. publishers, content, format, graphic appearance, and even the name of the journal itself. The status of the publication in the discipline and the representation of archaeology on its pages also changed. Up until 1947-1948 it was primarily a Czech journal, with topics from other regions appearing only rarely, even after 1918. Despite constant financial difficulties, the journal was never closed down and was kept alive at the cost of considerable personal sacrifice.
The article presents the Early Bronze Age cemetery investigated in 1985 in connection with the construction of Southwest City in the residential area of Nov & eacute; Butovice (cadastral territory of Prague-Stod & uring;lky). The burial ground was composed of around 25 graves in three spatially divided groups dated to the late phase of the & Uacute;n & ecaron;tice culture in Bohemia. Remnants of stone or organic structures were identified in graves. In addition to miniature pottery vessels, grave inventories also included artefacts from metal and amber. For the first time in Bohemia, detailed attention was paid to a functional analysis of the metal blades of daggers, which defined traces of the production process of the artefacts or traces of their use. Short-term use of the cemetery in connection with the high relative representation of artefacts tied to a certain status of the deceased shows regional specific development and the dynamic of the late phase of the & Uacute;n & ecaron;tice culture in Bohemia.
The rendering of the animal images seemed so artistic to modern researchers that it far exceeded their ideas about the intellectual level of the creators and required an interpretation beyond the realm of everyday life. Given that these were pictures often hidden in the depths of the earth, the majority of interpretations were religious, while natural human qualities such as creativity, desire to surprise others with something new, longing to stand out, humour, child's play, or proof of courage were not taken into account. And for that matter, these impulses remain unsung to this day. Unsatisfied with such an outright rejection, the author of this current work therefore takes into account all the phenomena of cave art to which religious motivations are ascribed. In short, these prehistoric artists did not paint symbols, but images of animals, which were only secondarily endowed with a possible symbolic meaning. As such, the author emphasises the difference between the supposed religious motivation for the creation of paintings, engravings, and signs and the religious or mythological phenomena that reflect or were subsequently connected with them. Of course, artistic activities could only develop in a society that valued such impractical activities. Without this approval, creative efforts would have remained isolated. At the same time, it is clear that expressions of spirituality can also be studied on seemingly entirely profane manifestations such as depositions of bones and the excessive mining of flint.
Terénnímu odkryvu předcházelo využití nedestruktivních metod, a to především pravidelných povrchových prospekcí a geofyzikálního měření, díky čemuž se podařilo prostor předpokládané sklářské dílny lokalizovat. Během výzkumu byly zachyceny netradiční archeologické situace, které poskytly velké množství rozmanitého materiálu datovaného především do střední a mladší doby laténské.
During the Early Bronze Age, the Hosty settlement in South Bohemia was important nodal point on the long-distance trade route connecting the Alpine and Danube regions with the & Uacute;n & ecaron;tice-culture world and northern Europe. Its well-preserved settlement layers contained imported exotics, artefacts, and raw materials from all directions. An outstanding set of 33 arrowheads forms the largest known projectile collection from settlement sites of the Early Bronze Age in central Europe. The main part of late lithic projectiles proceeds from a burial context, whereas those from settlements are generally infrequent. Preliminary results of material culture analysis identify the special status of Hosty settlement showing evidence of contact with west-Carpathian and Danube territories of cultures in the later phases of the Early Bronze Age. Here, we analyse Hosty arrowheads in terms of raw material, technology, use-wear, and ballistics and compare them with projectiles from the area of South Moravia and Western Slovakia that have recently undergone similar extensive analysis. Based on all results, we clarify the origin and the role of archers in events which took place at Hosty settlement.
