The proposed study analyzes the transformation of the Ukrainian wheat market under the influence of hybrid and full-scale war during the period 2019–2024. Comparative analysis and market concentration indicators (Herfindahl-Hirschman, Linda, and Gini indices) allowed us to estimate the export volumes of wheat to global markets and, therefore, the impact of the war in Ukraine on global food security. The study's findings indicate that, despite the low market concentration, changes in the volumes and traditional logistical routes of Ukrainian grain exports have increased threats to global food security.
This study analyses purchase intention toward genetically modified foods among older Spanish consumers (Generation X and Baby Boomers) using the TRA framework and a sample of 248 respondents. PLS-SEM results (R² = 0.71) show that subjective norms have the strongest positive effect, perceived usefulness also has a positive impact, and perceived risk has a negative effect. Perceived value influences intention indirectly through usefulness, while sociodemographic variables are not significant. NCA findings identify perceived usefulness and perceived value as necessary conditions for achieving high purchase intention.
The Mediterranean Forest faces increasing pressures from climate change, including wildfires, land abandonment, and biodiversity loss. Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are sustainable strategies that address these challenges. This study examines how voluntary and mandatory payment mechanisms affect citizens’ willingness to pay (WTP) for forest restoration through NbS in Valencia, Spain. A discrete-choice experiment evaluated 603 respondents’ preferences for ecosystem services’ improvement. Results show stronger support for voluntary payments (WTP values of €58.96 for moderate improvements and €113.07 for substantial ones) compared to mandatory payments (€32.48 and €71.97). These findings provide insights for designing socially acceptable and effective forest restoration policies.
Tortillas are a representative element of the Mexican diet; in the south of Mexico, corn tortillas called tostadas are handmade. Discrete choice and psychological salience experiments were used to evaluate consumer behavior. Consumers prefer artisanal, healthy and natural tostadas and are willing to pay a premium price for them. Two consumer segments were identified: “Presentation Observers” and “Healthy Lovers”. There was no statistical difference between the symbolic and utilitarian psychological meanings. The representative utilitarian meanings were taste, appearance, dishes and pairing; and the symbolic meanings: appetence, process, hedonism and tradition.
We analyze Total Factor Productivity (TFP) using a large farm level panel data set from El Salvador, a country highly vulnerable to climatic events. For this purpose, alternative stochastic production frontier models are implemented to evaluate the robustness of the analysis. Key findings show that temperature shocks adversely impact output, aggregate rainfall has a positive effect, while mean temperature exhibits no significant effect. Furthermore, TFP declined by -5.36 % on average, while average technological change and technical efficiency declined by -2.25 % and -1.36 %, respectively with considerable variability across time and space.
Biodiversity loss in megadiverse countries such as Peru threatens the resilience of ecosystems and cultural heritage, although evidence of its economic value is limited. This paper estimates the economic value of conserving biodiversity in Manu National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. Using choice experiments, willingness to pay (WTP) for protecting threatened flora and fauna and reducing deforestation was estimated. The results show higher WTP for threatened flora associated with cultural familiarity. The non-use value amounts to USD 19.7 million, supporting conservation policies.
Economic instruments are widely used in environmental policy; however, their application in water governance often lacks contextual clarity. This paper presents an integrated taxonomy of economic instruments for sustainable water management and proposes a complementary, trajectory-based framework for assessing time-dependent performance. Interventions are characterised by implementation profile (single, discontinuous, or continuous) and by response type (static or dynamic, with reinforcing or eroding effects). Combining these dimensions clarifies how behavioural and institutional adjustment shapes outcomes over time, supporting the design and evaluation of robust, adaptable, and context-sensitive instruments for long-term water sustainability.
Extra virgin olive oil can be conventional or organic, and the demand for both depends on consumer satisfaction. This research, carried out in Lleida and Sfax with 405 respondents in each area, applied the ECSI-PLS-SEM model to analyze consumer satisfaction with organic and conventional olive oil. The results show that perceived quality and image have a greater influence on satisfaction in Lleida, while in Sfax the value for money stands out. These findings allow us to identify key factors to improve satisfaction and guide business planning in both markets, adapting strategies according to local preferences.
We seek to recognize, from an up-deep scaling approach (arrangements of actors and institutions, pragmatism, and appropriation), the triggering elements of systemic change as empirical evidence of the relationships between actors through Social Network Analysis. Through case studies with farmers in the central region of Mexico, we found that the management of relational capital is key in the scaling of agricultural innovations; where market and the presence of articulating actors are two elements that energize the network and oriented the innovation. The commercial, agricultural and social public policy environment shape the potential for scaling up.
The study models Uruguay's agricultural sector at a regional scale through a partial equilibrium model of land use. Once built, a baseline is established with a 10-year time horizon to produce projections of land use and production. It can also be used in a counterfactual manner for the analysis and evaluation of potential policy interventions or market changes. In Uruguay, there are few modeling studies of the sector, and there are no regional projections that capture the heterogeneity of agricultural production.
The objective of the research was to identify the dimensions of the concept of traditional food from a consumer perspective in a border city in the Northwest of Mexico, through the technique of word association. The results of the study expand and support the perception that consumers on the border of Mexico have about a traditional food, confirming the usefulness of word association as an analysis technique. Recognizing these associations can facilitate the creation of more effective commercial strategies to promote the consumption of traditional foods in the region.
The arrival of a designation of origin represents opportunities and uncertainties with a direct impact within organisations. This research describes the operational management capacity of micro distilleries (Sonoran bacanora, Mexican mezcal and Jalisco raicilla) in regions where the designation of origin is recent. With a sample of 87 production units, differences were identified by group in the human factor profile, training, use of technology, marketing reach, and progress in quality certification. It is concluded that they must strengthen their operational management in a planned manner to take advantage of the benefits of the DO.
Minimizing food loss and waste along the agri-food chain is a key challenge addressed by European policies and the Sustainable Development Goals. The lack of official records and reliable data hinders the implementation of effective actions. This article proposes a methodology based on CNAE codes to streamline the diagnosis of this issue within a given territory and illustrates its application in the Valencian Region (Spain). The proposed methodology enhances EU guidelines for measuring food loss and waste, facilitates its replicability across other regions, and provides recommendations to support the design of territorial agendas aimed at preventing and reducing such losses.
We assess whether consumers' attitudes towards sustainability are reflected in their food choices. Using an online survey, we elicit from 20,000 consumers in ten European countries the main motives when purchasing food, front-of-pack elements that signal differences in sustainability and purchase decisions. At the aggregated level, our results show that self-declared purchase motives translate into consumer choices, albeit in a divergent manner for the health and environmental components of sustainability. The findings can help policymakers and businesses to learn about the gap between attitudes and purchase behaviour and help them develop appropriate policies and strategies to promote sustainable food purchases.
