The following essay is an edited version of Chapter VIII of my Ph.D. dissertation, introduced by a heavily edited version of Chapter I, the Introduction to my dissertation. Its initial iteration was a transcript from a two-day event about recent archaeological work being done in our Neme homelands. The content primarily holds answers to questions presented by a public audience and remarks I made during the symposium.
On June 28, 2024, the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) opened part one of A Fountain of Creativity: Oregon's 20th Century Artists and the Legacy of Arlene Schnitzer, an exhibition showcasing works by Pacific Northwest artists that are held in the collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and his Family Foundation. Part two opened in November 2024. In the following essays, OHS Curator of Exhibitions Megan Lallier-Barron and OHS Boyle Family Executive Director Kerry Tymchuk offer context and analysis about the significance of the artwork displayed in the exhibition and the ways Arlene Schnitzer shaped the region's artistic culture.
