Abstract The costs of loneliness are immense, threatening physical and social health and facilitating the rise of totalitarianism. Since loneliness is fundamentally a cultural condition, cultural workers ought to lead the way by working to help people appreciate their inherent interdependence and to distinguish junk tradition from nourishing tradition. In short, folklorists need to address the present epidemic of loneliness.
