
The Uto earthquake (M 6.8, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan) that occurred on July 28, 2026, was highly unexpected for the scientific community. Slightly more than 10 years prior, a series of three strong Kumamoto events (M 6.0; 6.2; 7.0) occurred a few kilometers north of its epicenter. This “lulled the vigilance” of seismologists, as the duration of the seismic cycle for strong earthquakes is usually much higher. Researchers’ attention was shifted to the east coast of the Japanese archipelago, where a more powerful seismic event is expected in the Nankai Trough area. The authors of this publication had to return to previously obtained results and continue the assessment of movements and deformations in this region up to the present time. The obtained characteristics of crustal movements before strong earthquakes in this area showed that a single local area of high stresses during the interseismic period can be destroyed in stages by several strong events following each other with relatively short interseismic time intervals.
The collection contains materials of the reports of the scientific readings "Exolith—2026" dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of Professor O. V. Yapaskurt. A wide range of issues related to the study of sedimentary rocks (exoliths) of various genesis and ages, which have both fundamental scientific and applied significance, are considered. The collection of materials is of interest to geologists of various specialties who are engaged in the complex studies of the upper part of the lithosphere, as well as in the detailed lithological studies.

The Arctic region, having tremendous natural resources, is of strategic importance for the Russian Federation. Protection of the Arctic environment, its progressive development, modernization and reorganization of the expeditionary infrastructure as well as scientific research implementation become more effective in close international cooperation. Establishment of strong scientific relationships between research institutes of the Arctic Council States is essential for the achievement of their national and regional goals. This article is concerned with the description of the scientific-research institutes based in Norway, Finland and Sweden, which focus on the study of the Arctic. The paper covers their main objectives, areas of a scientific activity, educational projects arrangement and participation in the Arctic expeditions. The article discusses an existing interaction of the considered scientific institutes of the Scandinavian countries with the institutes and universities of the Russian Federation, investigating the Arctic and Antarctic. This review will allow expanding current ways and outlining new possibilities of collaboration between the countries of the Arctic pool within the Arctic exploration and development. The paper particularly emphasizes on such large international projects as the University of the Arctic (UArctic), the MOSAiC expedition and the International Meteorological Institute (IMI).
