Research articles constitute a significant genre of academic writing and typically consist of abstract, introduction, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusion sections. The conclusion section serves to evaluate the study, highlight the significance of the findings, and present general implications of the research. In the field of linguistics, the conclusion sections of Turkish research articles constitute a noteworthy site of inquiry, as they reflect the writing practices and expectations of the disciplinary discourse community. This study examines the types, frequency, and sequencing of moves and steps employed in these sections based on the framework of Yang and Allison (2003). The corpus consists of conclusion sections drawn from research articles published in the Journal of Linguistics Research between 2000-2023. The findings reveal that the conclusion sections predominantly rely on two major moves, namely “summarizing the study” and “evaluating the study.” Moreover, the results indicate a preference for a linear pattern and a dominant sequence in the organization of conclusion sections.
The questions of how derived words are processed and if semantic transparency affects the processing route have been a hotly debated topic for many years, and many studies have been conducted in different languages. While some studies find no effect of transparency and support the use of morpho-orthographic information, there are also studies that reveal the effect of transparency together with the use of morpho-semantic information. And few studies posit the hybrid model, which includes the use of both information types. This study aims to explore the processing of derived words in monolingual adult Turkish speakers. The results of the masked priming experiment indicate that monolingual Turkish speakers decompose both transparent and opaque words, but words in the orthographic-only overlap condition are not decomposed. These results show that monolingual Turkish speakers employ morpho-orthographic information, but the effect of semantic transparency on the processing of Turkish derived words does not turn out to be statistically significant.
This study investigates how morphologically complex compound words in Turkish are processed in real time by monolingual Turkish speakers. To this end, compound words that are in their root forms are categorized as either semantically transparent (e.g., babaanne [grandmother]) or semantically opaque (e.g., karakol [police station]), and the effect of semantic transparency on morphological processing is examined. In the lexical decision task conducted with a masked priming experiment, the response times to the constituents of compound words are analyzed to determine whether these words are processed through morphological decomposition or full-listing. The findings indicate that semantic transparency has no effect when the non-head constituents serve as the target words, suggesting that both transparent and opaque compounds are processed through morphological decomposition. On the other hand, when the head constituents function as the target words, semantic transparency is found to influence the processing pattern and lead to the use of different processing models. These results demonstrate that there is a crucial relationship between semantic transparency and the head constituent in the processing of compound words and that this relationship can alter the processing pattern.
The concept of translanguaging first emerged in a Welsh-English bilingual educational context and has since been adopted in various fields, particularly in language education. It refers to the holistic and flexible use of all linguistic resources within an individual's repertoire during meaning-making processes, transcending traditional language boundaries. This approach allows multilingual individuals to creatively and dynamically integrate their linguistic competencies. While translanguaging has gained widespread attention in international literature, various Turkish equivalents have recently appeared in the national academic discourse. This study examines the Turkish translations proposed for the term 'translanguaging' and obtained through a systematic review method from both conceptual and terminological perspectives. Among these, the term “diller ötesilik” is proposed as the most comprehensive and accurate representation of the original concept. The aim is to promote the adoption of this term in Turkish scholarly literature and contribute to greater conceptual clarity in studies related to translanguaging.
This study investigates how professional identity shapes rhetorical strategies in consumer-to- consumer (C2C) vehicle advertisements on sahibinden.com, a major Turkish digital marketplace. Using Swales' (1990) move-step framework, we analyzed 550 professionally attributed listings. A mixed-methods approach combining chi-square tests and standardized residual analysis revealed statistically significant rhetorical variation across professions (p < .001, Cramér's V = 0.175). The findings suggest the emergence of four ethos patterns: (1) medical professionals tend to rely on institutional credibility through document-based assertions; (2) mechanics appear more likely to use colloquial analogies and imperative directives; (3) imams frequently incorporate religious appeals, particularly in closing sequences; and (4) nurses appear to reference gender more frequently than other groups, capitalizing on local stereotypes associating female sellers with meticulous vehicle maintenance. Across all listings, User Information (24.6%) and Creditableness (13.9%) moves dominate, underscoring the centrality of trust-building in C2C contexts. These findings may challenge rigid boundaries between institutional and vernacular rhetoric, suggesting that professional ethos may be strategically deployed as persuasive capital in informal digital marketplaces. Limitations include the Türkiye- specific sample and unexamined gender dynamics; cross- linguistic replication is needed.
We examine the function and structure of ki-clauses in Modern Greek dialects of Trabzon (Romeyka), Silli, Cappadocia and Pharasa. We demonstrate that ki, transferred from Turkish, has been integrated into the clausal spine of these dialects in JudgeP (Krifka, 2023), whereby the speaker renders their private epistemic judgement regarding an assertion in its scope. In the source language, Turkish, ki spells-out not only Judge head—the lowest head in the expressive layer—but all heads of this layer. Given that ki realizes solely the Judge head in the Asia Minor Greek dialects, we propose a constraint according to which the accommodation of morphosyntactic rules in contact situations commences at the lowest relevant projection of a layer relevant to that rule. In other words, the accommodation of contact-induced rules correlates with structural complexity.
This study explores the contemporary status of Laz, an endangered South Caucasian language, exploring factors shaping its vitality within the ethnolinguistic vitality framework. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research utilizes questionnaires and interviews within Laz- speaking communities. While the questionnaires (n=259) probed vitality- related aspects, the interviews (n=5) offered narrative data, essential for understanding lived experiences and perceptions of the community. Bridging a crucial gap in research by encompassing socio-cultural and demographic dimensions, the study reveals diverse influences on the visibility of Laz. This innovative approach contributes significantly to the broader field, offering a holistic exploration of ethnolinguistic vitality. Findings expose variations shaped by linguistic, cultural, and social dynamics. The quantitative data unveil statistically significant mean disparities in the perceptions of vitality held by the speakers towards their heritage language. The qualitative analysis, focusing on generational tensions, societal adaptations, and language use, underscores the resilience and challenges faced by the Laz.
This paper examines the methods and techniques used in fieldwork for documenting endangered languages in Anatolia, taking the Çankırı variety of the Posha language as a case in point. The data for the study were collected from Çankırı Poshas between 2010 and 2015. As pointed out in previous studies, the Posha language, including its regional variants, is endangered. However, documenting a minority language poses difficulties depending on the functions of the language in the community and the attitudes of the speakers toward their language. Sharing and discussing these challenges can contribute to the design of more methodologically sound future research and assist in identifying potentially misleading elements in existing data. In this context, this study offers a practice-informed theoretical perspective on the methods and techniques used in the documentation and analysis of an endangered language through examples from the Posha language.
The preservation of heritage languages often relies on family language policies (FLP), shaped by parental attitudes and practices (Fishman, 1991). This study investigates FLP in Homshetsma-speaking families, focusing on the endangered status of the language. Using Spolsky’s (2004) model, in- depth interviews and observations with five bilingual families in Hopa and Kemalpaşa explore FLP in three areas: language ideology, practice, and management. Homshetsma is widely regarded as a symbol of Hemshinli identity, but parental language policies vary. Some parents prioritize maintaining Homshetsma for cultural preservation, while others emphasize Turkish for better education and economic opportunities. Language practices also differ: some families actively use Homshetsma, while others are less committed to passing it down. Limited educational resources further complicate language management. The study's findings offer important insights for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers, emphasizing the necessity for targeted interventions and resources to support endangered languages like Homshetsma, both in Turkey and worldwide.
This study presents a detailed examination of the nouns used by the Laz and Homshetsma-speaking communities in the Kemalpaşa district of Artvin, Türkiye. It aims to document and analyze the lexical features of these two endangered minority languages, which belong to the South Caucasian and Indo-European language families, respectively. The Black Sea region’s complex linguistic landscape results from historical migrations and interactions among various ethnic groups (Kırzıoğlu, 1976; Simonian, 2007). Using a lexical atlas approach, this research maps out the vocabulary differences and similarities between Laz and Homshetsma speakers in Kemalpaşa. Data collection involved extensive fieldwork, including interviews and data elicitation with Laz and Homshetsma native speakers. By highlighting the unique lexical traits of Laz and Homshetsma, the study also sheds light on the broader sociolinguistic dynamics of the region, offering insights into language contact, shift, and maintenance. The findings underscore the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity, advocating for policies that support the preservation of minority languages in Türkiye. This initial volume sets the stage for further comparative studies across different regions inhabited by Laz and Homshetsma speakers. This atlas serves as a crucial resource for linguists and anthropologists interested in the Caucasian linguistic area, contributing to the preservation and understanding of these endangered languages.
This study examines the mutual intelligibility between Kurmanji and Zazaki. The research area selected for this study is the province of Elâzığ, where both languages are spoken. Participants consist of middle and high school students aged between 14–19 from nine district centers where Kurmanji or Zazaki is spoken as native language. The study included a total of 243 participants, with 27 individuals selected from each district. The participants' intelligibility levels of the test language were assessed through text-based tests designed at the B1 proficiency level. The study measured participants' perceived intelligibility of the test language by asking how much they understood and examined extralinguistic factors that might influence mutual intelligibility. In this context, the participants’ exposure to the test language and their attitudes toward it were assessed using a Likert scale. The findings indicate that mutual intelligibility between Kurmanji and Zazaki remains below 40% for both languages. Furthermore, no significant difference was found between participants' attitudes toward the test language and their functional test results. However, a significant correlation was identified between exposure to the test language and functional test scores.
The Visual World Paradigm (VWP) is one of the most widely used experimental paradigms in psycholinguistic research for studying online word and sentence processing. Over the past three decades, a wealth of research has shown that eye movements can reveal much about the systematic and temporal relationship between fixations on visual information and online language processing. The present systematic review takes stock of the current state of the VWP as an experimental paradigm, outlining critical issues that should guide future research. In this paper, we provide a systematic overview of the role of language functions using the VWP in speech comprehension from a cross-linguistic perspective. Our findings contribute to the VWP literature by evaluating existing methodological approaches and outlining directions for future research. The review reveals that although methodological sophistication has increased, especially through the adoption of methods such as LMMs and GAMMs, a significant gap remains in linguistic diversity.
This research examined Turkish-speaking children’s comprehension of prosodic focus and clefts. The first experiment investigated preschoolers’ comprehension of prosodic focus regarding subject and object-focused sentences. Results indicated that children comprehend object-focused sentences more effectively than subject-focused ones until the age of five. Our second experiment explored the effects of pragmatic felicity, age, and cleft type on the cleft comprehension abilities of children. The findings demonstrated that Turkish-speaking children comprehend both cleft types successfully regardless of these factors. Thus, children’s understanding of prosodic focus develops gradually, and the object focus is perceived as the default in the early years of development. However, Turkish-speaking children achieve a high level of competence in interpreting both types of clefts. Our findings suggest that the syntactic structure of Turkish plays a significant role in shaping children’s comprehension abilities.
Even in wh-in-situ languages like Turkish, there are configurations where a wh-phrase fails to take scope in-situ above another scopal element (such as negative concord items). These configurations known as intervention configurations can be obviated via overt movement of the wh-phrase to the left of the element causing the uninterpretability. In this study, I document cases where such overt movement of the wh-phrase (optionally or necessarily) pied-pipes a larger constituent it is part of. Adopting a compositional semantics for interpreting pied-piping structures, I argue that pied-piping is a general mechanism for exceptional scope, compositionally implementing earlier insights in the syntax literature.
