
The name Aster alpinus var. glabratus Herbich was first published by Herbich (1834: 574) and linked with the description in Additamentum ad floram Galiciae (Herbich 1831: 44). The name was based on specimens he collected in the Pieniny Mountains, Western Carpathians, Poland. Aster alpinus var. glabratus is distinguished by its glabrous leaves which are ciliate at the margins, and involucral bracts (in the protologue inappropriately named ‘squamae calycinae’), as opposed to the nominal taxon with hairy (at least adaxially) laminae. Aster alpinus var. glabratus is widely distributed in the Western Carpathians (Poland, Slovakia) and Eastern Carpathians (Romania, Ukraine). Franz Herbich (1791–1865) visited the Pieniny Mountains in 1829, 1830 and 1832 (Herbich 1834: 564, 572). All the taxa from the Pieniny Mountains enumerated in his Additamentum were collected in 1829 (Herbich 1831: 6). Continuing a revision of Herbich’s collection, we found in the herbarium of the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (LW) eight specimens collected by him in the Pieniny Mountains. Only two of them (LW 214582, LW 214579) come from 1829. Specimen LW 214582 is labelled A. alpinus without any intraspecific attributes. Specimen LW 214579 contains two labels with different names: A. alpinus var. glabriuscul[us] and A. alpinus var. pienninus, which, however, were never published. Remarks on the second of them conform to the diagnosis of A. alpinus var. glabratus stated in the protologue. Here we designate this specimen as the lectotype of the name A. alpinus var. glabratus (Fig. 1). On the herbarium sheet of LW 214577 the collecting date was given as ‘1829–1830–1832’; that is, the label includes all the years during which Herbich visited the Pieniny Mountains (Herbich 1834). The morphological characters of all the mentioned specimens suit the description of A. alpinus var. glabratus. The present paper is the latest in a series on the typification of the vascular plant taxa described from Poland (Cieślak & Paul 2011; Szeląg 2013; Szeląg & Kobiv 2014, 2016).
Dicranodontium schwabei Thér. & Herzog, a poorly known species from Western Patagonia in Chile, is briefly assessed taxonomically. Some morphological and anatomical details of the species are illustrated and the problems associated with the typification of its name are discussed. The conspecificity of this species and Chorisodontium aciphyllum (Hook.f. & Wilson) Broth. is confirmed and the geographical distribution and ecology of the latter species is briefly reviewed.
Abstract Didymodon validus Limpr. is not universally recognised as a species in its own right but it is often considered a variety, D. rigidulus Hedw. var. validus (Limpr.) Düll. The epithet validus was used at varietal rank only in 1923, as Barbula rigidula (Hedw.) Mitt. var. valida (Limpr.) Broth., but this taxon was actually recognised as a variety, B. rigidula var. gigantea Schlieph. ex Warnst., already in 1904, and this name is lectotypified herein. Accordingly, the transfer of this variety to Didymodon Hedw., as D. rigidulus var. giganteus (Schlieph. ex Warnst.) Ochyra & Bednarek-Ochyra, comb. nov., is effected. This is the correct name for this Central European-Central Asian montane taxon at variety rank. Didymodon validus is considered a new synonym of D. rigidulus var. giganteus.
. The taxonomic and nomenclatural history of the broadly conceived genus Bryum Hedw. is briefly outlined. Twenty-one species, originating mostly from the Southern Hemisphere and traditionally classified in this genus, have been transferred to the widely accepted segregates of Bryum , including six in Imbribryum N. Pedersen, three in Leptostomopsis (Broth.) J. R. Spence & H. P. Ramsay, one in Plagiobryoides J. R. Spence, nine in Ptychostomum Hornsch. and two in Rosulabryum J. R. Spence.
The type material of Racomitrium canescens (Hedw.) Brid. fo. erythrophyllum Sakurai from Japan is taxonomically evaluated. This form perfectly falls within the range of variation of Dilutineuron corrugatum (Bednarek-Ochyra) BednarekOchyra, Sawicki, Ochyra, Szczecińska & Plášek and, accordingly, R. canescens fo. erythrophyllum is reduced to synonymy with this species name.
This study confirms the first certain occurrence of Juncus squarrosus L., an Atlantic species, in the Romanian native flora. Characteristic plant communities with J. squarrosus occur in the Apuseni Mts (Western Romanian Carpathians). At these sites J. squarrosus has the southeastern limit of its European distribution. The identified plant communities with J. squarrosus in Romania are devoid of some Atlantic species present in Western and Central European communities and therefore are assigned to the Nardo-Juncetum squarrosi (Nordh. 1920) Bük. 1942 association. This plant community is a new syntaxon for the Romanian vegetation.
The paper reports the first detailed study of the diversity of euglenoids recorded from the El Farafra Oasis in the Western Desert of Egypt. Four of the 20 identified species are new records for the Egyptian algal flora: the colorless Peranema inflexum Skuja, and the three pigmented species Euglena adhaerens Matv., Phacus crassus Zakryś & M. Łukomska and Ph. cristatus Zakryś & M. Łukomska. A brief description and original documentation are given for each reported morphospecies.
New taxonomic and distributional data are provided for three eastern Asian species of Calamagrostis (Poaceae, Agrostidinae) in Vietnam: C. abnormis (Hook. f.) Shukla, C. extremiorientalis (Tzvel.) Prob. and C. tripilifera Hook. f. The new national record of C. extremiorientalis is reported here for Vietnam, where it was previously misidentified as C. elatior (Griseb.) A. Camus or Deyeuxia petelotii Hitchc. (= C. abnormis). The presence of C. tripilifera and C. abnormis in Vietnam is confirmed. Additional new provincial records of C. extremiorientalis from Japan’s Bonin Islands (also known as the Ogasawara Islands) and C. tripilifera from Daba Mountains in the northern Chongqing Municipality (Central China) are reported here. A key for identification of Calamagrostis species in Vietnam, nomenclatural data and information about geographical, altitudinal and habitat distributions are provided. Maps showing their complete distribution in eastern Asia are presented.
Rosa rugosa Thunb. is an invasive alien plant which was introduced from East Asia to Europe in the 19th century. Over the decades it has spread along the Finnish coast, including the archipelagos of the Baltic Sea. The shrub grows particularly along sandy beaches, stony shores and seashore meadows. There it leads to serious changes in coastal ecosystems and replaces native plant species. This paper presents the distribution and habitat preferences of R. rugosa in and near Archipelago Sea National Park in SW Finland. We identified 205 stands in the study area, 58% of them in protected areas. Systematic inventories do not cover the whole study area, so it is likely that dozens of stands remain undiscovered. Stands of the species were concentrated on the outer islands, where the archipelago’s most characteristic flora and fauna occur. Data on the shore type and area of all stands were collected. The total area covered by R. rugosa was 7277 m2 before control work started in 2008. The largest stand occurred on Örö Island, covering ca 2500 m2 before its eradication, and the median size of all stands was 6 m2. Five of the six largest stands were on sandy beach, but stony shore was the most common habitat type.
Two new combinations for Myriolecis zosterae (Ach.) Śliwa, Zhao Xin & Lumbsch varieties are proposed: M. zosterae var. beringii (Nyl.) Śliwa and M. zosterae var. palanderi (Vain.) Śliwa. Additionally, M. zosterae var. zosterae is reported for the first time from Poland. The species is briefly discussed and its known distribution in Poland illustrated.
A rust infection was recently observed on Grewia tiliifolia Vahl during an exploration of rust fungi in Himachal Pradesh, India, in October 2015. An examination identified the rust fungus as Puccinia tiliaefolia T. S. Ramakr. & Sundaram. This finding represents a new record for the northwestern Himalayas and the first finding of Puccinia tiliaefolia in India in the last 46 years. A geographical distribution map of P. tiliaefolia is presented.
A revision of the large-celled costate and ecostate species of Fissidens subgenus Aloma Kindb. from tropical Africa is presented. Fissidens flaccidus var. mammillosus Brugg.-Nann. var. nov. is described and the Neotropical F. mollis Mitt. is reinstated. Most African specimens previously identified as F. enervis Sim are referred to Fissidens dealbatus Hook. f. & Wilson, a new indigene for Africa. Fissidens molliculus P. de la Varde, F. hedbergii P. de la Varde and F. hookerioides Bizot & Onr. in Bizot are subsumed under F. dealbatus. Fissidens enervis s.str. appeared to be a rare species. The distributions in O’Shea (2006) are revised, updated and, when necessary, amended. Fissidens flaccidus Mitt. is for the first time reported from South Africa and Guinea, F. zollingeri Mont. from Ghana, F. grandifolius Broth. & P. de la Varde from Cameroon and F. usambaricus Broth. from Malawi and Gabon. Pending further research, F. palmatus Hedw. is excluded from the African bryoflora. It is stressed that, since vegetative and perichaetial stems are different, perichaetial stems (and leaves of perichaetial stems) are to be compared with perichaetial stems (and leaves of perichaetial stems), whereas vegetative stems (and leaves of vegetative stems) should be compared with other vegetative stems (and leaves of vegetative stems).
Abstract Woronichinia Elenkin is a cyanobacteria genus characteristic of lentic ecosystems. The type species, W. naegeliana (Unger) Elenkin, often blooms in the plankton of eutrophic reservoirs but this genus also contains species sensitive to high nutrient concentrations. The study analyzed the diversity and biomass of Woronichinia in lakes in a national park, isolated from the direct impact of human activity. The lakes were in various trophic states resulting from gradual and natural changes of trophy. Trophy was assessed with the use of the trophic diatom index, according to the classification we proposed for natural lakes. The relationship between the biomass and the trophic state of lakes was investigated with the use of multivariate unconstrained analysis with supplementary variables. Five species of Woronichinia were identified in all trophic types of lakes except for two oligotrophic ones: W. compacta (Lemmerm.) Komárek & Hindák, W. delicatula (Skuja) Komárek & Hindák, W. karelica Komárek & Komárk.-Legn., W. obtusa Joosten and W. naegeliana (Unger) Elenkin. The occurrence and biomass of the species were related to the trophic state of the lakes. The absence of Woronichinia in two oligotrophic lakes could be due to the high concentration of humic compounds in the sediments. The low nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio characteristic of the oligo-mesotrophic lakes resulted in increased species diversity. The lakes’ isolation from human activity fostered the development of rare and sensitive species such as W. delicatula and W. karelica.
A taxonomic and nomenclatural history of the moss genus Pterogonium Sw. is outlined and the illegitimacy of this name is confirmed. Nogopterium Crosby & W. R. Buck, the name of a new genus erected to replace the illegitimate Pterogonium, is accepted as validly published. This genus consists of five species, two of which, N. coreense (Cardot) Tad. Suzuki and N. tenellum (Tad. Suzuki & Z. Iwats.) Tad. Suzuki, have only recently been transferred to this genus. The transfer of the fifth species, N. tsilingense (P. C. Chen) Tad. Suzuki ex Ochyra & Bedn.-Ochyra, comb. nov., is effected in the present account.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the distribution of lichen species of the genus Lepraria in Knyszyn Forest (NE Poland) to different forest plant communities. Six species of Lepraria [L. eburnea J. R. Laundon, L. elobata Tønsberg, L. incana (L.) Ach., L. jackii Tønsberg, L. lobificans Nyl. and L. vouaxii (Hue) R. C. Harris] recorded from Knyszyn Forest. Lepraria eburnea is a new species for the studied area. The most common species were Lepraria incana and L. lobificans. Among the studied forest communities the richest in species (5 species of Lepraria) were oak-hornbeam forest (Tilio-Carpinetum), and the least species-rich (2 species) were maple-linden slope forest (Aceri-Tilietum), alder carr (Carici elongatae-Alnetum) and spruce forest (Sphagno girgensohnii-Piceetum). The richest lichen diversity in the Knyszyn Forest was found on deciduous trees such as Carpinus betulus L. and Quercus robur L. (4 species), Tilia cordata Mill. (3 spp.), and conifers such as Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and Pinus sylvestris L. (3 spp.).
Abstract Gomphonema vibrio var. subcapitatum (A. Mayer) J. H. Lee, hitherto unknown in Poland, is reported here from six lakes in the northeastern part of the country. This diatom prefers alkaline waters of medium conductivity and low nitrate and chlorine concentrations. The taxon is documented by SEM images and LM micrographs, and its morphological variability and distribution are briefly discussed.
. A preliminary inventory of the eastern Nigerian highlands yielded 27 bryophyte species (5 liverworts, 22 mosses), including 13 species new for the country (2 liverworts and 11 mosses). The large percentage of new national records ( ca 52%) indicates that the eastern Nigerian highland has rich bryophyte diversity and is undercollected. A more detailed inventory of the region using more rigorous sampling protocols is recommended.
This paper presents seven freshwater lichen species from Western Carpathian streams: Bryobilimbia ahlesii (Körb.) Fryday et al., Rhizocarpon sublavatum Fryday, Thelidium circumspersellum (Nyl.) Zschacke, T. klementii Servít, T. pluvium Orange, T. rehmii Zschacke and Verrucaria devensis (G. Salisbury) Orange. All of them are first records for Poland. Thelidium klementii is new for the Carpathians and was previously known only from the type locality in Germany. Morphological descriptions based on Polish specimens are presented, and the ecology and geographical distribution of these lichens are briefly discussed.
Abstract Colura crenulata Grolle (Lejeuneaceae), a rare and poorly known species from Papua New Guinea, Sumatra and Borneo, was newly discovered in tropical montane forests in southern Thailand. It is characterized by its acutely mamillose lobule sac and perianth; apical crest of the lobule sac consisting of 1-5 cells; large valve composed of 18-21 hyaline margin cells and 20-29 median cells, with a single median basal cell; and nearly entire dorsal margin of the leaf. This species is described and illustrated in detail, and its diagnostic characters and a comparison with the related species are briefly treated.
Goodyera lanceolata Ridl., a rare orchid species previously known only from Selangor, Peninsular Malaysia, was newly discovered in lower montane forests in southern Thailand. A description, line drawings and photographs are provided, and its diagnostic characters and geographical distribution are briefly discussed.
