Abstract Pectodictyon pyramidale Akiyama and Hirose is a microscopic alga currently placed in the family Sphaerodictyaceae with just three other species, Pectodictyon cubicum Taft, Dictyastrum mirabile Beck, and Sphaerodictyon coelastroides Jao. Pectodictyon pyramidale was originally described from Japan, and has been reported from additional sites in Asia, Europe, and Africa. Here, we report P. pyramidale for the first time in the New World. We collected this species at six artificial bodies of water (five freshwater retention ponds and one canal) in Martin County, Florida during summer 2025. This species probably established in the region as a result of accidental introduction, possibly accompanying imported aquatic ornamentals, such as the sacred lotus, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.
Abstract In August 2023, the composition, diversity, and relationships with environmental factors of benthic algae in the three lakes and two ponds located in the Kaçkar Mountains National Park were investigated. The surveyed flora comprised 139 species across five taxonomic groups: Bacillariophyta (75 species), Charophyta (35), Cyanobacteria (17), Chlorophyta (8), and Euglenozoa (4). The most species-rich genera were Pinnularia (13), followed by Eunotia (10), Cosmarium (10), Staurastrum (7), and Closterium (6). Physico-chemical analyses indicated that the waters were fresh, slightly acidic, low in salinity, and free from organic pollution, which was corroborated by bioindicator species. This study provides baseline data on the composition of benthic algae and highlights the lack of significant anthropogenic impact on these habitats.
Abstract Our work offer information on the abundance, probability of occurrences, distribution, morphometric, and cohabitation abilities of Perccottus glenii . The study was conducted in the east edge of Europe in 562 small rivers and 122 lakes with high geographical and ecological heterogeneity. Probability of occurrence for P. glenii of lakes ‒ 41% and 2.5% in small river, and it has been growing lately. The highest percentage (30.3) of coexisted for P. glenii was observed with Carassius gibelio ‒ other invasive species. Elevation, depth and tree/bush cover were the factors influencing the distribution of P. glenii in lakes. In small rivers, the probability of occurrences of P. glenii increased in the eastern study areas in wide and deep areas with a low percentage of forest cover.
Abstract This article analyzes a method for reconstructing the marine paleo-habitat from the Triassic Period in Dobrogea. A reconstruction of a paleo-habitat, in general, requires a good understanding of the natural setting and the living conditions of the animal organisms that are representative of it. To realize that, it was necessary to use the free Quantum GIS (QGIS) application, designed for data processing in a GIS environment, and the SQLite file format for temporary data storage. Data processing provided a general picture of the northwestern boundary of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean, an area with shallow, warm waters (temperatures of 20-25°C), medium salinity, well-aerated conditions, and a generally sandy substrate.
Abstract Domestication in aquaculture is recent and limited to a few species. This study, conducted through a literature review from indexed databases (Scopus, Web of Science) and other relevant sources, is based on a rigorous methodological screening. The analysis defines domestication, addresses its determinism, and discusses the domestication syndrome in relation to genetics, epigenetics, and environmental factors. The effects on fish behavior, reproduction, and life cycle are examined, along with challenges related to farming practices. Finally, the study highlights the impacts of domestication on resilience and ecological interactions.
Abstract This study analyzes the impact of fishing pressure on the dynamics and resilience of Coptodon guineensis in Lake Toho (southwestern Benin), using size-frequency data (2002-2003 and 2022-2024) processed with FiSAT II. Results show a decline in maximum length and weight (31.3 cm/908 g to 18 cm/119 g), earlier sexual maturity, and a reduction in mature individuals and large breeders. Growth and exploitation parameters indicate reduced longevity, lower yield per recruit, and persistent overexploitation. Overall, the biological and ecological status of the species has deteriorated, undermining its long-term resilience and threatening the food security of local communities dependent on this fishery resource.
To study water quality changes and tidal effects, hourly samples were collected on 17-18 June 2022, in the Andharmanik River, Bangladesh. Parameters measured included temperature (28.8-30.6 °C), salinity, dissolved oxygen (5.9-6.33 mg/L), pH (7.15-7.98), TDS, conductivity, alkalinity, and hardness. Temperature, DO, and pH showed minimal correlation with water height, while salinity peaked at low tide due to evaporation and no freshwater inflow. Strong correlations were between TDS and conductivity, and water height and several parameters. Most measurements varied with the tide, offering a key baseline data for the region.
This study studies the interaction between persistent organic pollutants and microplastics in freshwater, aiming to identify potential correlations between their concentrations. The analysis is grounded in laboratory experiments examining the adsorption capacity of common plastic polymers (e.g., PET, PS, PP, PVC, AC, PE, and PA) for persistent organic pollutants. The research uniquely explores the synergistic behaviour of these pollutants, providing foundational knowledge for future studies focused on selective adsorption mechanisms and the fragmentation processes of contaminated plastics into microplastics.
Warming climates induce Mediterranean Sea level rise, which is destined to have major impacts on Rhône Delta habitats, biocoenosis, and escorting biota, including fish. Based on their bioecological features, a number of fish species in the Rhône Delta will be affected by such sea level rise. Others will adapt and positive ecological feedback loops may fuel further changes. Sea level variation was and is likely to be one of the key stress factors for fish in the Rhône Delta.
This study investigated the response of benthic macroinvertebrate communities to salinity variations along the stretch of a coastal lagoon in Nigeria. 576 samples collected using a van Veen grab of 0.1 m 2 size from eight investigation stations were used for this study. Benthic macrofauna population of 177,120 m 2 from 45 species was recorded. Molluscs were the main group, making up 98.43% of the population, followed by anelids, arthropods, and several other macroinvertebrate groups. Although seasonal changes had a minor effect on fauna abundance, the richness, diversity, and evenness of species were not significantly impacted. Salinity gradients played a crucial role in determining the distribution and abundance of benthic macrofauna. Locations with elevated salinity levels (> 0.34‰) exhibited greater abundance.
The literature contains numerous studies on the individual effects of microplastics and pharmaceuticals that reach aquatic systems through various pathways. However, there are few studies that evaluate their combined effects. Ceftriaxone (CEF) and polypropylene (PP) are emerging pollutants found in the aquatic environment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of ceftriaxone (50 µg L −1 ) and polypropylene (2 mg L −1 ) (individually and in mixture) on the behaviour of Danio rerio . The exposure to microplastics and antibiotics, alone or combined, differentially affect Danio rerio exploratory and social behaviours, with combined exposure potentially exacerbating behavioural alterations.
This study assessed fish farmers’ access to information and perceptions on climate change in Kumbotso Local Government Area, Nigeria, using purposive sampling and descriptive statistics. Most respondents were young men (84%) under 35, with tertiary studies (40%). While 62.5% were aware of climate change, only 41.7% had strong knowledge of adaptation strategies, and 29.1% were aware of policies. Key challenges included temperature changes (62.5%) and water scarcity (66.7%). Adaptation measures like species diversification (77.1%) and climate-resilient feeds (62.5%) were common, though sustainable practices were underutilized (18.8%). Improved accessibility to information and resources are needed.
The ichthyofauna of the Nera River is shaped by the adaptation and evolution of fish fauna to the local highly variable relief of this river watershed. In the last half century, in some aspects, it was moderately influenced by the human activities’ impact over time in different degrees, but also by the sectors in a good ecological status, which can be considered as sanctuaries for important ecological and economic fish species. Also, climate change can be added as another driver. This research almost doubled the number of known fish species in this area.
Abstract Approximately, 0.36 ± 0.10 g weight of kursha, Labeo dero (Hamilton, 1822) fry were stocked in aquaria and fed with commercial feed for 45 days to evaluate the effect of different stocking densities on growth performance, feed utilization, and survival. Three different treatment with the stocking density was maintained at 1 fry L −1 (T 1 ), 1.5 fry L −1 (T 2 ) and 2 fry L − 1 (T 3 ) respectively with having three replicates. The survival rate of all treatments was found to be above 90%. After 45 days of rearing period, growth performances (mean weight gain, SGR) and feed utilization parameters (FCR, PER) was found significantly (p < 0.05) better in T 2 followed by T 1 and T 3 .
The aim of this study is to describe the biodiversity and current status of ichthyofauna in the Lesser Zab River. Through the examination of more than 1,500 samples collected from various river stations between May and August 2014 and June and August 2016, 35 fish species belonging to six families have been identified. The fish identified belong to the orders Cypriniformes, Siluriformes, and Synbranchiformes, which include Cyprinidae, Balitoridae, Sisoridae, and Mastasembelidae. Both meristic and morphological analyses were conducted on the specimens. Some of these species are reported for the first time in this part of the Zab River. Additionally, the study mentions the effects of anthropogenic and climate changes on fish biodiversity in this basin.
This paper proposes a novel multi-task statistical learning framework which aims to concurrently address all the environmental challenges in the Alps. The goal is to analyse the effects of lichen and fog on water balance. The objective is the analysis of water balance mechanisms by investigating the contribution of fog and the role of forest age in the water cycle. The methods include advanced multitask learning with statistical modelling techniques. The results shown that interception plays a dominant role in the precipitation and evapotranspiration partitioning, enhanced by lichens. Trees transpiration as lower in the young stand and the evapotranspiration of soil and understory contributed considerably to the water balance at both stands. Moreover, fog caused additional throughfall in mixed fog and rain precipitation.
Abstract Floras of cyanobacteria, chlorophytes and euglenozoa of 14 glacial lakes and a pond in the Kaçkar Mountains National Park collected on 19 July, 28 August and 10 September 2020 comprised 66 species. Cyanobacteria were predominant (46.96%), Nostoc (Cyanobacteria) and Trachelomonas (Euglenozoa) were the most abundant. Physicochemical analysis and bioindicator species indicate that the studied waters are fresh, with low salinity and near-neutral or low-alkaline pH and are not polluted with organic matter. Statistical analysis of the data showed that algal and cyanobacterial floras are individual in geographically defined habitats.
The Meghna River, vital for Bangladesh’s ecosystems and livelihoods, faces threats from urbanization, agriculture, industrialization, pollution, and climate change. This study examines the basin’s spatio-temporal dynamics, focusing on hydro-physico-chemical properties (temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity) and bio-resources (phytoplankton, zooplankton, and benthic macroinvertebrates). Field surveys, laboratory analyses, and satellite imagery revealed consistent patterns, highlighting the ecosystem’s vulnerability and the urgent need for conservation strategies to sustain ecological balance and livelihoods.
This research show the daily behavior of the Mallard in Lac des Oiseaux. The study was conducted over three consecutive years (2020, 2021, 2022) (morning and afternoon). The variation in the number of Mallard individuals did not follow a time-series trend, with the peak number of individuals observed in November-December. Foraging dominated the diurnal time budget of this duck. The proportion of each activity differed significantly between the morning and afternoon periods, except for flying activity. Energetic activities were positively correlated and observed during both the morning and afternoon. Wetland management should incorporate behavior of the species in order to ensure effective conservation strategies.
