
The article offers information on a research conducted by the author in which he studied two-layer automotive coatings. He examined top and waterborne layers by high resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). It highlights that the top layer had limited water ingress and water uptake depended on properties of the base coat. It discusses how environment affected intake of water by the coatings.

Rolf van Benthem, Chair of the organizing committee, greeted the attendees of the 7th Coatings Science International Conference (CoSi) in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, at the first conference day. With temperatures exceeding 35 °C at least on the first two conference days, this could be taken quite literally.
Biofouling tests were carried out on two distinct types of building material : solid white concrete and autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC). The performance of surface treatments depend strongly on the bioreceptivity of the concrete surface. Combinations of water repellents and biocides performed best, but photocatalytic TiO2 also significantly inhibited biofouling.

Kirsten Wrede: A balanced mixture of academic and industrial presentations, lively discussions and an intensive exchange of ideas - the Coatings Science International Conference (COSI) has again demonstrated its quality. Some 90 international coatings experts from both industry and academia gathered at the fifth COSI conference in Noordwijk at the Dutch North Sea coast. Slightly fewer participants than in 2008 - due to the global economic crisis, as the organisers explained.
TNO has created a 'release on demand' technology in which matrix particles are formed from biopolymers crosslinked into a three-dimensional network. The particles release compounds only when triggered by stimuli such as temperature, pH, humidity or certain bacterial metabolites. This gives efficient use of active ingredients and prevents premature leaching.
Three current projects involving hybrid organic-inorganic sol-get coatings are described. Anticorrosive coatings have been developed as replacements for chromium pretreatment. Bio-active coatings limit the growth of fouling and corrosion-promoting micro-organisms. Conductive polymers have been incorporated in sol-gel systems to create anticorrosive coatings.
Dirk Meine: The third Coatings Science International Conference took place from 25 to 29 June in Noordwijk, Netherlands, and was again well supported by some 114 attendees/ Thirty-three technical papers plus poster presentations from university and industrial coatings reserch offered an interesting overview of the current state of scientific developments.
In 2001, TNO completed a major project on the performance of more than 30 different coil coating systems [1, 2]. The main objective was to investigate corrosion protection through artificial corrosion tests and outdoor exposures, which were continued for up to ten years. Gloss measurements were performed to obtain information on the weathering behaviour of the top coatings. The first part, published, in ECJ 1-2/20 06 [3] examined test results and the effects of test conditions on gloss retention. Here, the correlations between the various tests are examined. It is concluded that only one accelerated test correlates reasonably well with some outdoor exposures, and then only for the non-polyester systems. Improved artificial weathering tests must therefore be developed to allow more reliable prediction of outdoor weathering performance.
Diazonium treatment is a well-established method for making self-dispersible grades of carbon black pigments. The fact that many colour pigments can be similarly treated is surprising, because they have very different surface chemistries. The diazonium reaction for two types of pigments is shown to proceed in quite distinct ways.
UV technology is attractive in the coatings, inks and adhesives industry essentially because of the photolatency of photoinitiators. Photolatent effects can also be found in other areas. In the second article on this subject, the properties and uses of photolatent fragrances are examined.
Point of sale (POS) tinting systems are gaining in popularity in the decorative coatings market, but the liquid tinters used show handling problems and may cause waterborne coatings to exceed future regulatory limits on VOC levels. An existing range of readily-dispersed dry granular tinters has been modified for use in POS tinting, and a novel automated dispenser has been developed to dose these dry colours accurately.
