
Phradonoma cercyonoides Reitter, 1887 and Reesa vespulae (Milliron, 1939) (Megatominae: Megatomini) are reported for the first time from Greece. Distribution, invasiveness and status of both species are discussed. Phradonoma cercyonoides is tentatively suggested as alien to the country. An updated list of the non-native Dermestidae of Greece is provided, supplementing our knowledge on the alien Dermestidae of Europe. The broad-headed bug Nemausus sordidatus (Stal, 1858), distributed across Africa, the Near East, southern Iberian Peninsula and Sicily, is recorded from Greece and Cyprus for the first time. Habitus photographs of the recorded specimens are presented, and the status of the species as invasive in the two countries is discussed. The historical collection of Chalcidoidea (Hymenoptera) deposited in the Museum of Zoology of the University of Athens is reviewed. Despite the small number and poor condition of specimens, two new records for the Greek fauna have been established: Eucharis (Psilogastrellus) punctata Forster, 1859 and Stilbula cyniformis (Rossi, 1792) (Eucharitidae). The collection constitutes an important part of the cultural heritage and holds some of the oldest—more than one century ago—Chalcidoidea specimens collected in Greece. The white mango scale insect (WMS), Aulacaspis tubercularis Newstead, 1906 is a key pest of mango in Ethiopia, which has been spreading throughout the country since its introduction in 2010. Evaluation of the efficacy of two systemic soil drenching insecticides (thiamethoxam 25 % WG and imidacloprid 35 % SC) independently, and in combination with tree management (pruning) for the control of the WMS was conducted under field conditions in western Ethiopia in two locations in 2018 and 2019. Randomized complete block designs with three replications were used for the experiments. In the first site, all treatments resulted in scale populations that were significantly lower than the control (1086 crawlers and females per leaf). Thiamethoxam 25 % WG at 12 g/tree + pruning resulted in the lowest number of the WMS after the second treatment (43.5 per leaf) followed by thiamethoxam 25 % WG at 18 g/tree + pruning, which was statistically similar. In the second site, imidacloprid 35 % SC + thiamethoxam 25 % WG at 18 g/tree + pruning, resulted in the lowest mean number of the WMS (31.1 per leaf) followed by thiamethoxam 25 % WG at 12 g/tree + pruning (61.4 per leaf). This treatment also gave the highest percentage reduction in number of the WMS compared to the WMS counting before treatment application. This study has shown that use of systemic insecticides and pruning are promising control tactics for the WMS. Cost implications and effects of the insecticides on the natural enemy complex and residual toxicity in fruits need to be evaluated. Changes to the key to the neotropical species of Dryinus group 3 are provided. a checklist of Dryinidae of french guiana sum ma rizing species distribution and hosts is presented. the following species are recorded from the country for the first time: Deinodryinus incaicus olmi, 1984; Dryinus caraibicus olmi, 1984; Dryinus panamensis (olmi, 1984); Dryinus pla u manni olmi, 2003; and Dryinus porteri (olmi, 1991).
Within the framework of the German-Israeli Lepidoptera Fauna of the Levant project during 1998–2010, a list of the presently known species of the Plusiinae (12 species), Acontiinae (10), Bryophilinae (10), Heliothinae (8), Metoponiinae (7), Eustrotiinae (4), Acronictinae (3), Condicinae (3), Psaphidinae (2), Bagisarinae (1), Dilobinae (1), and Eriopinae (1) is presented. Altogether 62 species of these subfamilies have been found in Jordan with 22 of them (35.5 %) being new records. High representativeness of species in comparison with the Levant fauna shown for the Acontiinae, Bryophilinae, Metoponiinae and Plusiinae ranging from 66.7–71.4 %. The Heliothinae of Jordan are represented by 80 % of species found in the Levant. The subfamily Acronictinae represented in Jordan only by 30 % of the Levant fauna is substantially impoverished due to the lack of rive rine forests, which are uncommon in Jordan. The total fauna of Jordanian Noc tuoidea is represented by 364 species.
This is the first report of the invasive scutellerid bug Deroplax silphoides (Thunberg, 1783) from Israel. The species is a pest of ornamental plants, whose immature stages and life history were previously unknown. Information on its nymphs, life history and distribution is provided and its association with Dodonaea viscosa (Sapindaceae) is reported for the first time.
species diversity of ants was recorded in 2000–2001 at seven stations of a microsite in nahal Keziv, western upper galilee, designated as ‘evolution Ca nyon’ II. In the 7000 m2 area, we recorded 31 ant species including one species identified only at the genus level: 19 on the ‘African’ slope, 12 on the ‘European’ slope, and 17 species at the valley bottom. among the recorded species one is new to the fauna of Israel (Cataglyphis semitonsus). Interslope ant species com position varies remarkably due to differential microclimatic conditions, partly demonstrating the effect of microclimate differences on ant species diversity at a microscale. further studies at this site following the ‘evolution Canyon’ mo del as conducted at eC I in mount Carmel, will enable indepth investigations of changes in biodiversity, adaptation and incipient sympatric speciation, i.e. evolution in action, within a relatively free breeding interslope populations.
The Lonchaeidae fauna of Israel is reviewed, and three new species are described: Lonchaea longitarsis, Protearomyia hermonensis, and Silba israel. S. israel is recorded also from the Democratic Republic of Congo, and some specimens of S. adipata are recorded from countries adjacent to Israel. A key is provided to the six genera and twelve species currently known from Israel, and locality records and general distribution are provided for all the species. Figures of male and/or female terminalia are provided for all the species.
Seventy-five species in thirty genera of Apionidae are recorded from Israel and the Sinai Peninsula, together with data on their general and local distribution, host plants, habitat, phenology and parasitoids. Keys are provided to the Curculionoidea families of Israel and to genera and species of the Apionidae of Israel. Twenty-six species are newly recorded from Israel, including five newly-described species: Catapion halperini n. sp., Ceratapion (Angustapion) ramoni n. sp., Perapion eretzisrael n. sp., Squamapion terrasanctae n. sp., and Stenopterapion argamani n. sp. A new genus, Necatapion, is proposed for Catapion bruleriei (Desbrochers), which is transferred from the Oxystomatini to incertae sedis. All new and most other species are illustrated.
The genera Molynocoelia Giglio-Tos and Pseudophorellia Lima are revised, and the new genus Alujamyia is described. These three genera are here recognized as the Molynocoelia group. All three genera are restricted to the Neotropical Region. Alujamyia includes four species from the Greater Antilles and northern Mesoamerica: A. bella, n. sp. (Mexico); A. farri, n. sp. (Cuba, Jamaica); A. isolata, n. sp. (Hispaniola, Puerto Rico); and A. sexvittata, n. sp. (Guatemala, Mexico). Molynocoelia includes four species from Mesoamerica and Brazil: M. grossa, n. sp. (Costa Rica); M. lutea Giglio-Tos (Mexico to Costa Rica); M. separata, n. sp. (Costa Rica); and M. plumosa, n. sp. (Brazil). Pseudophorellia includes 25 species from Hispaniola and Mexico to Bolivia: P. acrostichalis, n. sp. (Bolivia); P. antica, n. sp. (Costa Rica); P. anypsilon, n. sp. (Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama); P. bipunctata, n. sp. (Ecuador); P. brevilobata, n. sp. (Peru); P. confluens, n. sp. (Venezuela); P. decora, n. sp. (Costa Rica); P. diffusa, n. sp. (Costa Rica); P. distincta, n. sp. (Colombia); P. enkerlini, n. sp. (southern Mexico, Costa Rica); P. fenestrata, n. sp. (Panama); P. flavicauda, n. sp. (Colombia); P. flavida, n. sp. (Dominican Republic); P. fuscoapicata, n. sp. (Panama); P. hansoni, n. sp. (Costa Rica); P. maculata Lima (Brazil); P. marginata, n. sp. (Ecuador); P. quadricincta, n. sp. (Costa Rica, Panama); P. reducta, n. sp. (Brazil); P. semilunata, n. sp. (Panama); P. setosa, n. sp. (Costa Rica); P. stonei Lima (Panama); P. tica, n. sp. (Colombia, Costa Rica, French Guiana, Panama); P. tristeza, n. sp. (Surinam); and P. vespiformis, n. sp. (Venezuela). Keys to the species of each genus are provided, as are illustrations of pertinent diagnostic characters for all species. Phylogenetic relationships of the Molynocoelia group are analyzed. The group may be most closely related to the Paleotropical genera Callistomyia and Alincocallistomyia, and this larger clade is possibly related to the Toxotrypanini or Adramini. A cladistic analysis supports the Molynocoelia group, with Alujamyia, Molynocoelia, and Pseudophorellia as monophyletic taxa, and tests hypotheses of relationships among the species within each genus.
The phylogenetic relationships of 43 species in the subtribe Carpomyina (39 Rhagoletis spp., plus Carpomya schineri (Loew), Oedicarena latifrons (Wulp), Rhagoletotrypeta pastranai Aczel, and Zonosemata electa (Say)) are examined using morphological and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) characters. The taxon sample includes 5 Palearctic Rhagoletis species (R. almatensis Rohdendorf, R. batava Hering, R. flavicincta (Loew), R. flavigenualis Hering, and R. magniterebra (Rohdendorf)) and 5 Neotropical Rhagoletis species (R. blanchardi Aczel, R. ferruginea Hendel, R. lycopersella Smyth, R. nova (Schiner), and R. psalida Hendel) whose mtDNA relationships have not been previously analyzed. Phylogenetic analysis of 77 morphological features using unweighted parsimony yielded 28,671 most parsimonious reconstructions (MPRs). A strict consensus of these MPRs contained 12 clades, and further analysis using successive approximations improved phylogenetic resolution.
Tamarix nilotica and the spindle-gall moth, Amblypalpis olivierella Rag., were studied to test the hypothesis that gall-inducing larvae utilize the most vigorous plant modules available on individual host plants. Five trees were studied in the vicinity of Caesarea, Israel, and the complexity of their architecture and phenology described. Four types of shoot were recognized: pendulous, upright, short, and bole sprouts. Three phenological conditions of shoot growth were categorized: ( 1 ) active meristematic growth; ( 2 ) dormant shoots; and ( 3 ) short shoots, which were particularly young and actively growing. The general response of gall initiation in relation to shoot-length classes per tree was unique for each tree, depending upon the frequency of the different shoot types available as resources. Only vigorously growing shoots were utilized by larvae, which invaded shoots just behind active meristems. Young Tamarix with mainly upright and active shoots supported an exponentially rising attack rate with increasing shoot-length class. Large mature trees with more heterogeneous architecture and shoot types illustrated gall patterns in relation to shootlength categories that were significant or not significant depending on shoot type, but attack was invariably concentrated on meristematically active shoots in the tree canopies. Where very vigorous basal sprouts were present, in pruned trees in landscaping, these were attacked at a low frequency. Thus, the plant vigor hypothesis is supported if examined in relation to the meristematic activity of shoots at the time of attack, but simpler patterns in relation to shootlength classes, observed so frequently in north temperate systems, are obscured by the architectural complexity of these Mediterranean climate trees.
