Little is known about why Reinhold Gli ére, a prominent Russian composer, chose to write two pieces for harp.Nevertheless, Gli ére's Harp Concerto in E-Flat Major and Impromptu effectively use the harp's capabilities and have become standards in harp repertoire over the past century. The purpose of this study is to find out why Reinhold Gli ére chose to write for the harp. This essay discusses the place of the harp in the 19th century, particularly in Russia.A brief biography of Gli ére and his colleague, harpist Ksenia Erdely, is also provided, as well as a comparison of Gli ére's two harp compositions with other contemporary pieces. The main questions that this study seeks to answer are where Gli ére and Erdely met, why they worked together, and to what extent they collaborated.Likely answers are drawn from the two composers' educations and backgrounds as well as from an analysis of the compositional style and similarities of the two harp solos. Also included is a summary of important information that has not been obtained, in addition to ways that further research can continue providing insight into Gli ére and his relationship with the harp.
Paper seeks to rectify the inaccuracies in previous historians’ analyses of Greek women by investigating the social, political, and economic power held by various women within the Greek world, as demonstrated in art, religion, and literature.
How is Donald Trump's accusations of fake news changing readers and viewer's perspective of the media?During the 2016 presidential elections, Donald Trump began to make public statements that discredit how journalists report the news.In this paper, I will examine the ways in which the integrity and accuracy of news reporting have been challenged.I will begin by first establishing what journalistic values and ethics are.Next, I will describe historical parallels beginning in the nineteenth century with the birth of yellow journalism, the 20th century with President Nixon, and in the 21st century with the introduction of citizen journalism.Lastly, I will explore the emergence of a new type of media and learning how people get their news.A preliminary conclusion is that Americans, in general, have a growing mistrust of the media The conclusions also show that both Trump and Nixon, both dealing with a significant White House crisis, draw upon this mistrust and use it to attack the press in an attempt to discredit reporters and deflect blame from themselves. In both cases, however, there is evidence that coverage of a White House crisis reaffirms the "watchdog" role of the news media, but this relationship is strongly conditioned by partisan affiliation.Trump is able to play on the public's levels of uncertainty and political polarization to advantage himself by makinf the media look dishonest.
This study explores how mechanistic learning affects participants' knowledge and opinions of GMOs, as well as retention of knowledge and opinions. Two surveys were distributed to UNT, undergraduates before and after they read an informational passage on the process of genetic modification and recent research on GMO safety.Responses to multiple choice and free response questions allowed insight into their knowledge and opinions of GMOs.This study was predicated upon a study at University of California-Berkeley that used mechanistic knowledge to educate participants about the issue of climate change.Like the climate-change study, participants' knowledge increased after reading the informational passage, and they were more accepting of GMOs even several days after reading the passage.Together, these studies indicate that mechanistic knowledge is a useful tool for educating the public on controversial, scientific issues.
Children with autism often have difficulties expressing themselves in verbal communication. However, methods of communication for those with autism spectrum disorder can be supplemented using alternative and augmentative devices (AAC).While there is a variety of alternative and augmentative devices to choose from, there are benefits and drawbacks inherent to each technology. However, finding the best communication solution is important to the quality of outcome for AAC users. In order to institute these solutions, there must be an analysis of the users, their environments and the alternative and augmentative devices that are most commonly used.In this paper, I look at the different types of AAC devices and briefly describe some of the benefits and limitations of each kind.
Paper explores refugee representations in the 1950s of non-western/World War II in American media, specifically “smaller circulation” media - local newspapers, academic studies, and governmental documents.
It has been shown that humans have the most capacity to learn language at an early age, so why does the American education system wait until high school and higher education to put emphasis on learning a foreign language? While the initial purpose of my research question was to investigate why the American education system lacks national requirements, my research investigates why the Texas education system does not have state wide requirements in place for foreign language learning, especially Spanish, during early education.I conducted my research by getting the opinions of various Texas educators on this topic. The responses to my questionnaire revealed that the educators agree that funding, limited number of educators, lack of resources, and opinions against learning Spanish as a foreign language at a young age are potential factors that hinder the implementation of foreign language learning programs at the elementary level. While investigation of the literature and the opinions from the educators provided information about the inefficiency and need for change in the current approach to foreign language learning in the Texas education system, more research is needed before making changes in the Texas and American education system.
Rhythmic Dissonance is an underrated and understudied compositional device. While some theorists have attempted to codify and explain this phenomenon, the number of these individuals has been few, as have the number of explanations and explorations in this area. The author explores the precedents set by previous theorists in order to gain an understanding of the current state of rhythmic dissonance.Select irregularities and fallacies within these previous theories are exposed and a new theory is presented in order to expand on previous interpretations and provide new avenues of exploration. This is done through a close examination of the current and historical musical literature. For practicality, the author develops methods of theoretical analysis and compositional application. The author seeks not to provide a prescriptive means of application, but rather to present avenues of artistic development paved by the exploration and understanding of new and interesting concepts.
Over the past three decades, the art and museum world has taken a keen interest in the legalities of art restitution that specifically deals with artworks and other cultural property from World War II.This subset of art restitution revolves around claims that deal with Holocaust victims and their heirs who have come forward asking for the return of or acknowledgment that their property was wrongfully, and sometimes forcefully taken from them by the National Socialist German Workers' Party. This political group, better known as the Nazi Party was notorious during World War II for the looting of precious family heirlooms and other cultural property, specifically artworks. In recent years, many countries that were involved in World War II have attempted to come together to address the legal and cultural aftermath that resulted from Nazi art looting. However, other countries, including the United States, have chosen to remain within their own legal practices when it comes to Holocaust-era art restitution, thus making it difficult to reach a just conclusion for all parties involved in restitution efforts. In this paper I will analyze the condition of various legislation and museum standards that are currently being utilized by American art museums and other cultural institutions.I shall further discuss the application of these various pieces of legislation and museum standards by analyzing relevant court cases that have dealt with Holocaust-era restitution claims. Finally, I shall make recommendations pertaining to current legislation and museum standards that currently address Holocaust-era restitution claims, and I shall suggest how both American museums and our court system can reach an outcome that is fair and widely applicable when handling such claims.
After the U.S.-Mexican War, internal power struggles weakened the Mexico, and France forcefully established a government in 1862.In 1867, the United States (U.S.) invoked the Monroe Doctrine and placed military and political support behind exiled Mexican president Benito Ju árez. This political action pressured France
For years, people have been overusing antibacterial products, resulting in bacteria that are insusceptible to antibacterial products. This is due to misconceptions that surround antibacterial products. Studies have shown that many people aren’t aware of the dangers of antibacterial products, and expect a prescription of antibiotics upon doctor visits even in cases where antibiotics do not help. A common misconception, held by many, is the belief that antibacterial hand-washing products are more effective than normal hand-washing products. Similarly, many believe that antibacterial products are more effective when used in large amounts. However, studies reveal that these conceptions are faulty. Other studies show that education, especially science education, can help students understand more about hand hygiene. However, studies do not concentrate on students’ awareness of bacterial resistance, which is something I would like to test: Does the differing education provided to a science major and non-science major students affect their awareness of antibacterial resistance? This study tests whether biological science students are in fact more knowledge and, therefore, less likely to overuse antibacterial products. The results of the observational study and student survey reveal some surprising anomalies: while science majors are more likely to have heard about the dangers of microbial resistance, neither group frequently uses antibacterial products in recreational settings or in biology labs.
Since before the Mexican-American War, ingrained notions of American superiority over Mexicans appeared in narratives of Texas. This paper argues that Hubert Howe Bancroft, although referenced as an unbiased, realistic historian of Texas history in The Works of Hubert Howe Bancroft XVI: The History of North Mexican States and Texas volume 2, actually coded his narrative with images and text of United States' social dominance over Mexico.Using the lens of postcolonial theory, my research method performs a close reading of the eleven illustrations and the accompanying text, a comparison with primary cartographic sources, and an analysis of early historians' tropes of Texas to examine the crafted historical narrative and function of images. It concludes that, using manifest destiny in Austin's colony maps, and the use of empathy in maps describing emotional military losses, Bancroft's scientific Texas narrative is coded with United States' Anglo American moral and political superiority.
The Texas Centennial Exposition in 1936, held in Dallas, was the first exposition of its kind in the state.Texas celebrated its 100th anniversary of independence from Mexico with a permanent Fair Grounds and a 176-day celebration.Focused on Texas history, the Centennial would be so large and important it would attract the attention of the rest of the nation.Texas history could then be utilized for advertisement, and also to communicate a Texas historical narrative. As such, the Centennial was important in not only celebrating Texas history and improving the economy, but also defining a Texan identity. In this paper, I expand current scholarship, examining the Texas Centennial and one of its focal points, the State of Texas Building. With the new scholarship on Texas identity and myth making, such as the new publication of Lone Star Pasts, I argue alongside Cummins that the Texas Centennial poses a significant shift in Texas identity. However, rather than the argument that Cummins proposes, crafting an idea of a Western Texas, I propose that the Centennial was used to encapsulate and perpetuate the Texas myth and identity. The acres of Dallas Fair Park came together to create an exposition that combined the large state population into one collective Texas identity. This mythic historical narrative is crafted by the emphasis placed on the State of Texas building and the murals within its different rooms. In conjunction with the ideas of Regionalism and the New Deal, visual narratives, and historical memory, this building serves as a case study for the new developments over mythical historical narrative in Texas.
Political and social tensions between Mexico and the United States over land divisions created racial prejudices during the nineteenth century. The Mexican-American War following the annexation of Texas provided fuel for new animosities in depictions of Mexicans in images and narrative literature within U.S. culture. John Frost’s The Mexican War and its Warriors (1848) and other contemporary representations portrayed Mexicans as weak and untrustworthy cowards. My research uses theories of post-colonialism and Orientalism to argue that John Frost’s pictorial images and narratives of Mexicans were used as historical justifications for the intervention into Mexico.
Veteran integration back into society from military service is a lingering social problem due to the lack of research surrounding the issues that many veterans face today in regards to emotional stability. After time spent in combat zones many veterans are facing psychological issues such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and physical disabilities but these are only some of the problems veterans face since many of them chose to pursue higher education after their military service. How can we help veterans integrate back into civilian life through higher education after military service? This research conducts in-depth interviews with student veterans to obtain information on what problems they are in fact experiencing reintegrating back into society and to learn the effectiveness of available programs designed to help them. The research expects to find unique problems that student veterans have in transitioning back into society through higher education and the reasons why some available programs prove effective while other do not. This research seeks to make an important contribution towards designing support systems that are as effective as possible for higher education initiatives for veterans that are increasingly funded by federal programs such as the "new G.I.
Paper argues that Albert C. Ramsey’s The Other Side: or Notes for the History of the War Between Mexico and the U.S., a translation of a Mexican account of the war, Apuntes para la Historia de la Guerra entre M´ exico y los Estrados-Unidos depicts the Mexican perspective on the Mexican-American war to counter misrepresentations of Mexico by his American peers.
Emotion is a relatively new field of study, filled with assumptions and limited in previous research. In current studies, researchers know that emotions involve physiological and behavior responses somehow, but even the basic concept of ‘emotion’ is unclear. Further, few studies have looked at the intersection of auditory stimulus facial emotion recognition. This study conducts an experiment wherein conflicting emotional stimuli are fed to participants via the facial and auditory emotion recognition. A pilot group of 55 participants were recruited through Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (M-Turk) and asked to identify a facial expression as “happy” or “sad” while listening to music. The results show that when different musical stimuli are applied to a somewhat ambiguous facial expression, the tone of the music can have a significant effect on facial emotion recognition. Extending this research may provide insight into how the brain processes emotion.
