GCr15 high-carbon chromium bearing steel is a key material for rolling bearing components, and its heat treatment process directly affects microstructure and hardness. In response to the requirements of bearing-steel processing and final hardening, this study investigated the effects of annealing temperature, quenching temperature and low-temperature tempering holding time on the optical microstructure and hardness of industrial GCr15 steel. Five replicate hardness measurements were conducted for each condition. The experimental results show that annealing at 780 degrees C for 3 h followed by furnace cooling produced relatively uniform spheroidized carbides and the highest annealed hardness of 214 +/- 2.0 HBW among the tested conditions. For the subsequent quenching trials, the same annealing condition of 780 degrees C for 3 h with furnace cooling was used as the pre-treatment. Austenitization at 840 degrees C for 0.5 h followed by oil quenching gave the maximum hardness of 61.4 +/- 2.6 HRC, while lower temperatures showed insufficient hardening and higher temperatures showed evidence of coarser martensitic morphology. For specimens annealed at 780 degrees C for 3 h and austenitized at 840 degrees C for 0.5 h, tempering at 150 degrees C for 5 h provided a hardness of 58.2 +/- 1.1 HRC and a more stable tempered martensitic appearance under optical microscopy. Because the study was limited to optical microscopy and hardness testing, wear resistance, fatigue performance, retained austenite fraction and carbide morphology require further verification by SEM, XRD/EBSD and bearing-related mechanical tests. The technology of Water Spray Quenching has been established in industry for many years, e. g., in steel production for the quenching of strips or for semi-finished products. When using this process, water-mist is formed in nozzles and accelerated with high velocities towards the components to be quenched. Water Spray Quenching provides very high cooling rates. Additionally, by variation of the rate of water-flow and air-flow, the quench intensity can be varied in a wide range [1, 2]. However, for the heat treatment of complex shaped serial parts, such as gear-wheels, this process could not yet be applied successfully. So far this was not possible, since the water spray could not reach into the center of the heat treat loads consisting of multiple layers, as the outer parts of the load shield the inner parts from the effect of the water spray. With a new combination of vacuum heat treatment in single layers with subsequent Water Spray Quenching, it is now possible to apply Water Spray Quenching for serial parts. An industrial-scale test rig has been developed and used to investigate the following topics: cooling curves, heat transfer coefficients, core hardness - values, CHD - values, surface quality after quenching and the effect of a variation of quench intensity. It was demonstrated that the process offers a wide range of quench intensities up to very high cooling rates. Even when using low alloyed case hardening steels, high core hardness values were successfully obtained. In this study, low-carbon steel specimens were subjected to gas carburizing, carbonitriding, or nitriding at 800 degrees C, followed by oil quenching and tempering at 300 degrees C. The investigation focused on the effects of carbon and nitrogen on the resulting microstructure and mechanical properties. The carburized specimens consisted of martensite, fine pearlite, and a small amount of retained austenite. In contrast, the carbonitrided specimens were composed of martensite and retained austenite, while the nitrided specimens exhibited a microstructure of martensite, retained austenite, and pores. The amount of retained austenite in the specimens after quenching was observed to be higher in specimens with a larger amount of nitrogen. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that the carbonitrided and nitrided specimens after tempering had higher amounts of gamma'-Fe4N phase as the nitrogen content increased. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) analysis confirmed the precipitation of fine gamma'-Fe4N and epsilon-Fe-3(N, C) phases in the subsurface region of the tempered carbonitrided samples with a high nitrogen-to-carbon ratio. Except for the nitrided specimens where pore formation occurred, surface hardness after tempering increased in correlation with nitrogen content. Carbonitriding with a higher nitrogen-to-carbon ratio markedly improved the wear resistance of low-carbon steel.
AMAG Austria Metall AG is pursuing a comprehensive decarbonization strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. In this context, the company has initiated pilot projects to replace fossil-fuel-based furnace heating with CO2-free technologies. This article presents the conversion of two single-chamber heat treatment furnaces from natural gas to electric heating systems powered by renewable energy. Commissioned in July 2025, the retrofitted furnaces demonstrated stable thermal performance, meeting AMS 2750/AMS 2772 standards, and maintained highest product quality expectations. Comparative measurements revealed uncompromised temperature uniformity and energy savings of 26 % to 29 % compared to gas-fired operation. Annual CO2 emissions were reduced by approximately 100 tons per furnace, with long-term potential to cut Scope 1 emissions at the Ranshofen site by up to 40 % to 50 % compared to the current level once this technology has been broadly adopted. Despite higher electricity costs, electrification represents a crucial step toward compliance with EU climate targets. The findings provide a robust basis for scaling up sustainable furnace technologies across AMAG's production facilities. Microstructural and corrosion resistance studies were conducted after micro-arc oxidation coatings were created at different current densities and oxidation periods to improve the corrosion resistance of Al-Cu-Mg aluminum alloy 2A12 (EN AW-2024). The effects of current density and oxidation time on the microstructure, elemental composition, phase composition, and corrosion resistance of the coating were investigated using SEM, EDS, XRD, white light interferometer, and electrochemical workstation analysis. The findings show that alpha-Al2O3 and gamma-Al2O3 phases make up the majority of the coatings. Surface roughness progressively rises as the oxidation current density rises, layer thickness initially rises and then falls, and the self-corrosion current density essentially stays constant. As the oxidation duration grows, the film layer's thickness progressively rises, the surface roughness first rises before stabilizing, and the self-corrosion current density dramatically drops. At a current density of 4 A/dm2 and an oxidation time of 30 min, the film demonstrates optimal corrosion resistance, with a self-corrosion current density icorr of 3.15 & times; 10-8 A/cm2, suggesting a considerable improvement in the film's corrosion resistance.
Retained austenite is an essential structural component of rolling bearing steels, which significantly influences their mechanical and tribological properties. Although conventional quantification of the retained austenite content using X-ray diffraction provides high accuracy, it is time-consuming and unsuitable for process-integrated applications. Therefore, this study investigates the suitability of a multi-frequency electromagnetic testing method for the non-destructive determination of the retained austenite content in 100Cr6 and 100CrMn-Si6-4. A wide range of retained austenite contents was generated by systematically varying the austenitising and tempering temperatures. Strong correlations (r values of up to 0.97) were obtained between signal components and retained austenite content. Regression models based on these correlations enable reliable prediction of the retained austenite content. The results demonstrate the potential of harmonic analysis of eddy current signals for fast and process-oriented quality control of heat-treated components. However, additional microstructural changes may also influence the electromagnetic response and must be considered in robust quantitative evaluation.
In part 1 of this publication, it has been successfully shown, that volumetric heat sources can be used to replace electromagnetics when modelling induction surface hardening in scanning mode. Thereby, simulation models could be simplified, especially for components, such as large bearing rings. Three-dimensional heat sources have been determined from temperature measurements during induction surface hardening in scanning mode. Simulated temperature-time profiles agreed well with measurements, even if the process parameters differ from those used to determine heat source parameters. In part 2 of this publication, phase transformations will be added to the model to calculate microstructures and hardness in the surface hardened layer. This allows for model validation by metallography and hardness testing. Finally, a thermo-metallurgical model of surface induction hardening of large bearing rings in scanning mode using volumetric heat sources instead of electromagnetics has been successfully implemented. The Euro 7 regulation establishes binding limit values for particulate emissions from braking systems for the first time (PM10 <= 7 mg/km by 2035; <= 3 mg/km from 2035). Recuperative braking in electric vehicles significantly reduces the frequency of use of the friction brake, which leads to increased corrosion of gray cast iron brake discs and increased particulate emissions when braking again. The present work describes the development of ferrite nitrocarburizing with optimized post-oxidation as a thermochemical surface treatment for the simultaneous improvement of corrosion and wear resistance. The thermodynamically based process control via the nitriding and carbonization potentials enables the targeted adjustment of compound layer thickness, phase composition and porosity. The modified post-oxidation produces a magnetite layer with an embedded inorganic polymer that extends into the pores of the compound layer, whose self-healing mechanism is based on the dissolution, diffusion and recombination of metal ions to form poorly soluble compounds. Induction hardening of large bearing rings made of steel is a very challenging task. The four interacting physical fields electromagnetics, temperature, phase transformations and mechanics combined with the highly nonlinear material properties of typical steel grades make it difficult to produce components with the desired hardened layer while maintaining dimensional stability. Especially in small-batch or single-unit production, as it is often the case for large bearing rings, the process parameters are mostly chosen based on experience. Numerical simulations taking into account all physical fields and the relevant interactions are up to now not feasible for large bearing rings due to their high effort. Therefore, a new approach has been developed which replaces the electromagnetic field and its interactions by a moving volume heat source acting as a boundary condition for the temperature field. The heat source parameters are determined based on in-situ temperature measurements in case of a moving inductor. In the following part 2, the thermal simulations using the volume heat sources are complemented by phase transformations to deepen process understanding and allow for process improvements. The simulation results are validated by metallographic images and hardness tests.
This publication analyzes the influence of cooling rate on the solid solution state during and after die casting of the AlSi9Cu3 alloy and, based on simulation and experimental results, predicts the R p0.2 yield strength as a function of cooling rate. The subject of the investigation is a four-cylinder in-line engine cast using the laminar die casting process. The implementation of a thermocouple in the casting mold enables in-situ measurement of the temperature-time behavior during the casting process, from filling the mold to demolding the component. Based on this measurement, the heat transfer coefficient between the casting mold and the melt is validated in the Magmasoft® casting simulation. The temperature-time behavior after demolding is reproduced using a specific test setup. The temperature measurements taken enable the existing casting simulation in Magmasoft® to be extended to the quenching process outside the casting mold. The correlation of the results of the tensile tests from the crankcase with the determined cooling rates enables the prediction of the R p0.2 yield strength as a function of the temperature-time behavior for the application of laminar die casting.
Energy costs are the biggest expense factor in industrial heat treatment. Increasing efficiency and saving energy are therefore the focus of the further development of heat treatment plants. The increasing share of renewable energy in the power grid offers the opportunity to use cheap electricity with low CO 2 emissions. The fluctuating availability of renewable energy must be countered by intelligent process planning. To make this possible, numerical models are presented that can be used to forecast the power requirements of heat treatment processes. In particular, the modeling of thermal interactions within the heating chamber is explained. Targeted model simplifications enable short calculation times and practice-oriented parameterization. The results are validated using real process data. It is shown how simulation can be used in process planning to reduce emissions and costs and to make heat treatment processes more sustainable.
By influencing the properties of the surface and subsurface through deep rolling, the fatigue life of components can be significantly increased. However, this is largely dependent on the temperatures that occur during the process. To gain a deeper understanding of the thermal influence during hard turning, it is necessary to analyze the thermal influence decoupled from the machining process. For this reason, a method has been developed that allows the inductive heating of components to specifically study the influence of deep rolling at different temperatures. Based on simulations, the inductive heating of bearing rings was designed and implemented in a machine tool. The method allows targeted local and time-defined heating through knowledge of the coupling power and temperature control during inductive heating in a machine tool. Surface temperatures ranging from T O = 100 °C to 400 °C can be set.
The beta type Ti-14Mn-(0-12 wt.%)Zr alloy system showed promising results for biomedical applications. In this study, the investigation is extended to cover higher Zr-content in the alloy; namely, two compositions with 9Zr and 12Zr content are explored. These alloys were produced using an arc furnace, followed by forging at 900 degrees C and water quenching, and subsequent aging at 500 and 700 degrees C for 60 ks and water quenching. The microstructure examination was studied by an optical microscope and X-ray diffraction. The mechanical behavior was analyzed using hardness and compression tests. With the increase of Zr content, the beta stability is slowly increased. The hardness and yield stress increase with the rise in Zr owing to the solid solution strengthening. The aging at 700 degrees C for 60 ks led to a dual structure and increased the hardness to 449 HV2 and YS to 1279 MPa for the Ti-14Mn-12Zr alloy.
The present study investigates the response of CP titanium grade 2 on gaseous carbo-oxidizing in CO atmospheres. The treatments were carried out at 1000 and 1080 degrees C for different durations, which resulted in formation of mixed interstitial compounds, consisting of carbo-oxides and mixed interstitial solid solutions based on carbon and oxygen. The hardened surfaces were characterized by light optical microscopy, hardness indentation and X-ray diffraction. The case depth exceeded 0.5 mm and the formed carbo-oxides exhibited hardness values that range from 2500 to more than 3000 HV, depending on the carbon and oxygen content. Combination of carbo-oxidizing and nitriding resulted in augmented interstitial solubility, which is reflected in a higher hardness. In metallic alpha titanium, solid solution strengthening resulted in hardness values above 1700 HV.
The use of aluminum alloys is becoming increasingly important, particularly in special shipbuilding, where the low density and high corrosion resistance of the materials offer decisive advantages. In practice, however, there are considerable technical challenges. Compared to steel, the use of aluminum alloys implies a significantly greater welding-related distortion of the structure. This distortion must then be reduced using costly and time-consuming processes. The most commonly used process for this is the acetylene-oxygen flame straightening process. However, the knowledge and skills of experienced flame straighteners are largely subjective, which limits the possibility of a general process characterization. In order to make the process accessible to inexperienced prospective flame straighteners, the idea was born to systematize the process and work out promising straightening strategies in advance. This simulation-based approach not only reduces the probability of wrong decisions during the process, but also creates a basis for making the process more efficient and easier to plan. It is shown how the FE method can be used to optimize a straightening strategy in order to reduce distortion on larger assemblies. A series of experimental investigations help to validate the virtual simulation model. Laser Power Bed Fusion (LPBF) fabricated parts often require a modified heat treatment to accommodate for slight differences in composition due to the additive manufacturing process. Powders used for LPBF fabrication of the precipitation hardening 17-4PH stainless steel are often spray-atomized using N-2 cover gas, resulting in a significant nitrogen uptake which lowers the martensite start (M-s) temperature of the steel. Sub-zero treatments can promote martensite transformation in such alloys. In this work, wrought 17-4PH samples were high temperature solution nitrided (HTSN) to achieve nitrogen contents comparable to LPBF 17-4PH. Sub-zero dilatometry was used to track martensite formation behavior at sub-zero temperatures in the HTSN wrought and LPBF 17-4PH. Samples were further characterized through XRD, hardness, and optical microscopy. It was found that martensite morphology changes from lath to predominantly twinned with decreasing Ms (higher nitrogen), and thermally activated martensite formation was recorded on heating. The HTSN wrought samples also exceeded the standard peak hardness for 17-4PH, demonstrating that sub-zero treatments are effective at producing a hard martensitic microstructure for both HTSN and AM parts produced with N-2-atomized powders.
Martensitic stainless steels are an important group of steels for different applications. Their typical hardening consists of austenitizing, quenching and (multiple) tempering (Q&T). As many of these steels contain at least smaller amounts of retained austenite (RA) after quenching, partitioning of carbon and nitrogen from martensite into RA can take place during tempering, changing it from pure Q&T to combined Q&T and quenching & partitioning (Q&P). This contribution provides a systematic overview of such partitioning effects on microstructure and subsequently on material properties and were investigated with several steel grades and a wide variation in heat treatment parameters. The results demonstrate that partitioning effects dominate over tempering at temperatures up to 500 degrees C. Higher quenching temperatures can increase the RA-content similar to higher austenitizing temperatures. Lower quench rates can reduce RA due to carbide (nitride) precipitation. Rising tempering temperatures enhance austenite stabilization. Larger amounts of RA promote transformation induced plasticity (TRIP), leading to high ductility and tensile strength but reduced yield strength. Increased amounts of RA with sufficient stability raise impact toughness at slightly reduced hardness. Tempering above 500 degrees C in contrast promotes carbide and nitride precipitation, resulting in the elimination of the RA and therefore a typical tempering condition.
The present paper examines additively manufactured tool inserts in the series production of a die casting tool for a clutch housing. The inserts are manufactured by laser powder bed fusion using the well-established maraging steel 1.2709. Various post-treatment approaches are examined as part of the investigations. In addition to different downstream heat treatments, a component variant with a specific surface structure in the direction of demolding is also tested. A comprehensive damage analysis is carried out to determine the causes of failure and to derive recommendations for action to improve the service life of the mold insert and, thus, ultimately the quality of the casting. The mold inserts selected for the test series demonstrate that additive manufacturing can increase the service life of this specific tool insert by more than three times, while the acquisition costs for the insert are reduced by more than 50 %. In tools with areas that are subjected to high thermal stress, which benefit from conformal cooling and therefore cannot be produced using conventional manufacturing processes, the implementation of additively manufactured tool inserts is therefore recommended for both economic and technological reasons.
This publication investigates the influence of quenching velocity on the supersaturation of the solid solution state of the alloy AlSi9Cu3. The basic subject of these investigations are samples from a four-cylinder crankcase, cast in the laminar die-casting process. With regard to the examination methodology, two different implementations of solution annealing are used on specimens in the format of an M8 tensile specimen: Short-term solution annealing by means of diode lasers, which minimizes the influence on the casting structure and allows different cooling variations, as well as the conventional method of furnace solution annealing for very slow cooling rates of 0.1 °C/s. The samples are then cooled to room temperature after solution annealing and then subjected to artificial aging in the furnace (180 °C | 4 h). The subsequently determined R p0.2 yield strengths are correlated with the cooling rates, which allows the different precipitation behavior to be represented. Finally, the R p0.2 yield strength is set as a function of the cooling rate based on a mechanical material model.
Heat treatments are generally used to adjust the required material properties at certain positions in the component, particularly at geometric notches where high stress concentrations are present due to the geometric form factor. During the hardening of steel components in evaporating liquid media, the quenching process can lead to significant variations in local material properties due to inhomogeneous cooling behavior. The geometry of the component – size, shape (e. g., geometrical notches), and surface roughness – directly impacts the cooling behavior. Geometric notches, in particular, change the surface area to volume ratio, which affects local cooling rates and must be assessed for design considerations. It is crucial to compare local stress at the notch base to relevant material standards to ensure component safety under specified loads. Following the definition of the geometric form factors, a thermal form factor model is developed in the present work, which describes the cooling in the notch base. The thermal form factor relates the t 8/5 -times in the notch base to the t 8/5 -times at the unnotched surface, giving insight into locally expected material properties. Experimental investigations on austenitic steel, unnotched and notched cylindrical samples are presented which show the influence of the notch during quenching in oil.
