Th e practical result is potentially lower gains and reduced feed effi ciency, even with increased feed intake. Beef cattle adapt to colder temperatures during gradual changes in the season by growing longer hair, changing metabolism and hormone secretion (NRC, 1981), and depositing insulating fat if the energy level in the diet allows. A clean, dry hair coat and protection from the wind are very important factors that help cattle tolerate extremely cold temperatures.

In years that support higher yields than our N recommendation formulas indicate, our data show that greater N release from the soil will support these higher yields without requiring supplemental N fertilizer greater than capped rates. In addition, sunflower N recommendations are capped due to greater lodging risk as N rate increases.
High-moisture corn should be harvested at 24 to 33 percent moisture for optimum storage (maximum moisture of 40 percent). Harvesting corn at these moisture levels may require adjustments to harvest equipment to ensure grain is removed from the cob uniformly.
